The version of the Shanghai Opera is called "Young Lady's Fan" and I have seen it a long time ago. So when I look at this pure Western adaptation, I am not familiar with the plot, so I can see a lot of things I didn't understand before.
When women face women, especially when the ladies in the house face their husband's lover, they have the ambivalence of hatred and curiosity, contempt for her and full of subconscious concern. It's just like what Zhang Ailing said: "No matter how good a woman is, she won't be respected by the same sex if she doesn't get the love of the opposite sex." Women are just so cheap. So when Mrs. Windermere mistakenly thought that her husband was unfaithful to her, the way she took was to dress up as she thought he had been very attracted to—dressing like the sociable Mrs. Irene, and behaving very well. It also reveals the seductive style. She decided not to stick to morals, because her husband betrayed their marriage first.
In fact, her husband was only blackmailed by Mrs. Irene, who was his wife's biological mother, an old woman who left her husband or daughter out of her own desires.
The story is very simple. What makes people talk about it is actually the suspicion and tricks between men and women caused by misunderstandings, and I think the moral code behind these suspicions and tricks cannot even be questioned by the author himself, who is a romantic talent. The identity a woman chooses determines her status and degree of respect. There is still a difference between a woman who can make fun of and a serious woman, and men actually distinguish themselves very clearly. A selfish woman who pursues happiness and cannot resist temptation, society always has to make her pay. The topic that has remained unchanged throughout the ages is whether to be a virgin or a slut.
The wise Wilde did not give us the answer. Seek benevolence and benevolence, but for maternal love, his interpretation tells us, at least tell her daughter: to keep the marriage.
There is a section in the play where Mrs. Irene persuaded Mrs. Windermere to turn around. The latter retorted: "Aren't you doing well?"
Irene smiled bitterly and said with a mockery: "If you want to live like this, you will not regret it. That has to be practiced and mastered." The
mistake was reversed by the mother's coming forward. Under the reunion ending, the mystery of the life experience remained. Irene wants to keep her daughter's beautiful thoughts of her mother.
I really like Irene, her sophistication, her self-knowledge, her intelligence, her motherhood... such a woman bears everything she has done and never looks back.
When a woman faces temptation, her choice...
determines her future.
When a woman faces love, her pain...
women don't want a man's understanding, they want love.
When a woman faces family affection, what she does...
Don't repeat the same mistakes.
Gathering emotions and marriage, understanding of both sexes, positioning of women, gossip, luxury life and other selling points, Wilde’s story is worth seeing.
