The narrative structure of the film is very characteristic. The director slowly reveals the truth to the audience through the memories of the two intertwined loves by the three protagonists. It made the audience feel suddenly realized and sighed for several times. This technique has earned the film a reputation as a "detective love film" in France.
The overall style of the film is a typical modern French literary film. At the beginning, the jeweler introduced three wedding rings with their own characteristics to the hero. The hero did not immediately make a choice, indicating that he will have emotional entanglements with the three women in the future plot. After laying the groundwork, clues appeared. First, the male protagonist (Vincent) visited according to the clues to find the reason why his ex-girlfriend (Monica) left without saying goodbye. Then a mysterious girl appeared. She was Monica's close friend. From the reality that she will finally appear in Monica in Vincent's memories, through Monica's memories, we learn that Monica did not leave without saying goodbye. So what went wrong in the middle? All doubts point to this mysterious girl. Then, her memories told us a new story, or the innocent world of a girl. . . . .
Of course, the director finally arranged an ending corresponding to their destiny for each character. I am afraid that only the French can make such a film (the Americans have remade this film and it feels bad). The romantic French are explaining to us their view of love-to truly love someone means giving everything, even conscience; to be loved by someone means responsibility and should be cherished.
The tone of the film is full of French gentleness, the plot is compact but not tense, the shots are fickle but not changeable, and the actors' performances are natural but not sloppy. The first time I watched this movie was at Central 6 in the middle of the night in high school. I didn't see the beginning at that time, and I don't know the title of the movie. But just once, I was very impressed with the plot. After that, he even wrote down all the plots in words, and restored the "multiple flashbacks" to a straight story to straighten out the story. I came across this film review in a movie magazine when I was in college, and then I found out its title and story, and I searched for this film purposefully. After going to work, I started to search for discs and searched all over Beijing, and finally found the original D9 of this film in a genuine shop. At that time, the price of the genuine product made me hesitate for a second, but I just received the first D9 in my life. I finally saw the full version of the film (CCTV deleted the passion part of the film). Now, I have received three DVDs of different versions of this film. My fate with "The Apartment" can be described as twists and turns.
Today, I write this film review like a love letter. Finally vented my many years of emotions. And how beautiful it is that I love, please have the opportunity to taste it yourself.
