Caramel, as the name suggests, refers to the bitter and sweet taste, and another use of it is to draw out the scene of this story-the beauty salon. This private place became a gathering place for several heroines.
Layale fell in love with married couples and they secretly met. To help him celebrate his birthday, she booked a double room in a small hotel where the identity of the husband and wife did not need to be checked. She cleaned the room spotlessly, blew red balloons, baked cakes, and waited while calling his mobile phone. Perhaps she knew in her heart that he was running away, but she was still desperate; Nisrine was going to have a wedding with her husband. While everyone was immersed in a cheerful atmosphere, she worried that she was a virgin when she lied to her husband. Afterwards, she was encouraged and accompanied by her sisters to undergo repair surgery; Rima is a lesbian, and she has an ambiguous expression with the woman with long black hair that she often visits; Jamale, the old patron of the barber shop, is a woman who can’t face aging, she does it again and again. Auditioning, dreaming of celebrities; Rose from the tailor shop gave up the possibility of a good relationship because she had to take care of the delirious Lily. The film ended in the laughter of Nisrine’s wedding. There were no further explanations on many issues. It seemed to be a plain elaboration and a plain ending. I would like to believe that their lives are beautiful after all.
As a female-themed film, the tone of the whole plot is light, discussing religious and gender issues in a non-violent way, exposing some taboos in the Muslim world, such as homosexuality, extramarital affairs, and premarital sex. What attracts me to the film is that its tone is warm and saturated, the background music is very nice, and the characterization is delicate and complete. The lead actor Nadine Labaki is also the director and screenwriter of the film. He is so talented and beautiful. I like it very much.
Trivia: The film was selected for the director's biweekly unit of the 60th Cannes Film Festival.
