The story takes place at the end of the nineteenth century. Ignatz (played by Ralph Fiennes), a rich son, fell in love with his cousin, Villeroy (played by Jennifer Ehle), and married him despite the opposition of his family. His wife even abandoned her family name for the sake of official career and completely broke with her relatives. In the end, Ignatz's boisterous ambition not only hurt Villeret, but also exhausted himself. Adam (Sándor Szakácsi) is the youngest son of Ignatz. Facing his future, he made the same choice as his father. However, the hatred of the Jews by the Nazis completely smashed his illusions and hopes for the future.
