summary of the story

The story tells the story of a bank employee who enjoys a peaceful and happy life with his wife and son and was laid off due to the Great Depression. He has a family to support and he instantly lives on the street. His despair is utterly expressed. In order to take care of his wife and son, he becomes a wealthy widow. The story of the killer who persecuted them for money and was sent to the guillotine after persecuting more than 10 women.

How can I hold this movie?

The typical black humor is quite interesting and ironic, and Chaplin's performance is also very relaxed. Although from the current point of view, some of the plots in the movie seem a bit clichéd, they must have been very attractive at the time. PS: I found that the girls in the old movies are much more beautiful than the current ones. They are basically dignified and elegant, and they appear to be generous, rather than kitsch.

What the author wants to express

I think the author has expressed complaints against the government from many places. Whether it is economic or war, the government has played with the people between applause to satisfy the interests of a very small number of people.

Ver Duqin worked hard for the bank for 35 years. He was dismissed in the first batch just because of the economic crisis, and he became desperate. As he said on the trial bench, "Yes, I have a brain, but after 35 years old, no one needs him anymore." In order to take care of his wife and children, he treats his assassin business as a kind of business. He knows that he is killing people, but so what? He doesn’t have to be full of emotions, because it’s just a business that he has to do to take care of his wife and son. Just like the government launching war at will, millions of people lost their lives in an instant, but In the same way, it’s just "business". If the government is right, then he was right that the government ended up doing it this way—"I killed 1 person and I was treated as a criminal, and they killed millions. People are regarded as heroes"

But in the film, his emotions were triggered by the girl who was released in the rainy night. He saw himself from that girl. In order to take care of the same disabled family members, he kept running to earn money. Maybe the girl was one of his emotions. It's just projection, he used it to justify his criminal behavior? But undoubtedly, he was indeed moved by the girl. "This is not an era of despair, it is just an era of sadness and error, but kindness can make it better"

All in all, for this kind of film, we don't need to make too many comments on the behavior of the characters. This is just an exaggeration to describe an ordinary person living in such a sad era.
