Because it was built in 1968, I couldn't help but doubt that this dive shop, which was transformed from an oil rig in Semporna, Malaysia, was inspired by the true story contained in this movie.
In April 2016, I followed a diving tour organized by a friend to the well-known drilling platform in the diving circle. Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Semporna, stay for one night and then take a boat for an hour.
Looking from a distance, I was shocked by its macroscopic appearance, exactly the same as the scene in the movie-standing alone on the sea, with a steel body much higher than the water, forming a sharp contrast with the surrounding blue sky and blue sea of the South Ocean. It is beyond normal people's perception of diving resorts.
A mechanical lift is used to go up to the platform, and this lift is used every day for diving: boarding a ship, or jumping directly from the lift into the sea, every day will get a little oil during the lifting process.
The drilling rig is a real, unobstructed existence with wind from all directions. The wind is so strong, but it is wide and stable enough to not worry about being blown away at all.
The rooms are remodeled with containers. Each room has a small window, which is very narrow. It can live for two people and can't even fit the suitcase. Sleeping is easy to be awakened, because the ventilation is not good, often there will be oil ashes floating in.
The water source in the room is filtered sea water. When the public relations man in the movie first went to the island, he took a sip of water and said: It is almost fresh water. Most people are unlikely to have access to that kind of water, and there is only this grayish-colored water in your life. When you use it to wash your face, brush your teeth, wash the fruit, and take a bath, you know the kind of touch-it's astringent and not slippery. Water, mouth full of light salty taste when brushing teeth. Because of the sanitation problem of the filtered seawater, a total of forty of us came in, half of which had a gastrointestinal cold, vomiting and diarrhea, and some had fever. I still remember that when I went diving, I wanted to have diarrhea and felt very embarrassed. Fortunately, there is an infirmary on this drilling platform, which contains a local medicine, just take it. Did not delay diving.
I heard that this rig was transported from very far away in Australia or somewhere. Every day I sit at the big table in the center of the platform and eat buffet, and there is wind from all directions. The wind is very, very strong. The film is not restored at this point. It is estimated that everything only exists in the director’s imagination. All shooting is done in the studio. He should go to Malaysia to collect the scenery first. People can keep their hair flat on Rose Island. It's impossible not to be messed up! Every day, the wind is very strong, but it also feels refreshing. The whole figure seemed to be blown through by the wind, dry and comfortable. At night, sometimes the wind will become smaller, the platform is quiet, and the moonlight on the sea is very romantic. Whether it is day or night, lying on the guardrail of the platform, you can see schools of fish below, each of which is different.
There is a legendary dive guide on the drilling platform, a local uncle. He is familiar with every dive site in this sea area and where to find the big Jack fish storm. He doesn’t need any technology and equipment. He sails into the sea by experience and stands on the boat. Just look at it and you will know where to jump down and see the beautiful landscape. He formed a band, taking guests to dive to earn money during the day, singing and drinking at night, free and unrestrained, a paradise. I remember that he would sing "The Moon Represents My Heart" in Chinese. Everyone was surprised. I wanted to tip him more before leaving the platform, but I couldn't find anyone else, saying that I was going to sea again.
Another magical thing is that people on this drilling platform are guarded with live ammunition every night, because they were robbed by pirates many years ago...
The Semporna area has Sipadan, the most famous cliff diving spot in the world. The surrounding sea scenery is very pleasant and the visibility can reach 30-60 meters. "Glass water", cliffs, and countless kinds of fishes are unique and rare in the world. Describe the beauty of the vocabulary in desperation.
Sometimes, we would dive at night, get directly into the sea from the platform, and drill around the steel columns. After watching the movie, I seem to understand how these pillars stand in the sea (but I doubt the authenticity of the technology in the movie). The water flow between the pillars was very large, and novices were blown to and fro. There were many lionfish quietly staying between the pillars, possibly sleeping, and everyone was very nervous because the lionfish were poisonous.
The most romantic thing is that they go out to sea just after 5 o'clock in the morning. The bulging parrots in the nearby sea line up to patrol for food in the morning. There are hundreds of them. We did not wake up or wash our faces, so we dived on our backs. The equipment sets off on board. At this time, there will be a rainbow in the sky. With the sunrise, everyone listens to the sound of the waves colliding with the boat and feels the quiet and happy atmosphere, which will be unforgettable for a lifetime.
Although life on the drilling platform is very difficult, there are industrial scenes everywhere. Every day, the place where the gas cylinders are placed is like a movie set. The process of drying the diving suit is too cinematic, and I never get tired of it. In addition, the scenery in Shanghai is so beautiful that I always want to go there again.
Five years later, I suddenly saw a "device" appearing in a movie. Its appearance, temperament, and spiritual core were all too similar to the drilling platform, so I should share it quickly.
