The grievances and hatreds of the original novels and adapted movies are also quite a lot.
The same raw material, after the interpretation of different directors, the difference is quite big.
1. Image style
"The Dead in the Wrath Sea" has typical European characteristics. The overall color and shooting style are like old European postcards, with warm yellow tones, and the lazy and sunny Italian style. The rhythm is also much more relaxed, with a lot of idle pens, although it may not have much to do with the main storyline, but it can shape the atmosphere. Except for the squally rains during the killing, the colors at other times are quite sunny.
The director of "Genius Ripley" is actually European, but the style is still relatively Hollywood, and the overall color of the film is gloomy. It was shot as a black crime film, the rhythm is very lively, commercialized, and the script is basically Hollywood. That kind of style that hasn't settled one after another.
It's hard to say which one is better, but I prefer the former style, sin in the sun.
Second, the story
In the original novel, Ripley and Fu Erdai are still somewhat ambiguous, so he and Fu Erdai's girlfriend are more of an antagonistic relationship. His motive for killing is more of a mentality of wanting to get rich quickly and making a class transition, which is also somewhat of a jazz age background.
The tone in "The Sinking Corpse" is not obvious, but it adds to the emotional scene between him and his rich second-generation girlfriend. His important motive for murder has also become greedy for his girlfriend.
"Genius Ripley" adds a same-sex emotional drama, love begets hate. In the last paragraph, he fell in love with another man and killed him in the other's mumbling. This plot is a magical touch, and the adaptation is quite creative.
Speaking of which, the plots of the two editions are different from the original novel, but the adaptation of "Genius Ripley" won.
Third, the ending
Ripley was arrested in the ending of "The Sinking Corpse", which may be because the ending of the movie couldn't let the bad guys get away with it. But this ending completely violates the spirit of the original novel, and it is no wonder that the original author hates this ending very much. I also hate it very much.
The ending of "Genius Ripley" is still faithful to the spirit of the original. If he were not at large, how could there be that kind of mockery and anti-social spirit.
Fourth, the actors
Ripley is a character with his own evil spirits, and his IQ should be quite good.
So Mark Damon naturally loses points as soon as he enters the game. This dull and ugly look obviously does not match the Ripley in my mind. Although his acting skills are very good, the image is totally unbearable.
Alandron's handsomeness is of course needless to say, the number one European male back then is indeed well-deserved. His temperament is also in line with Ripley. It is said that he was born in a humble background, often did not act, and lived on soft food from time to time, so his life and mental state before the murder were quite close to Ripley.
Alain Delon won.
Five, the heroine
The heroine of "The Dead in the Wrath" is pretty good-looking, and very French, with five-star praise.
The heroine of "Genius Ripley" is a bit ugly, not in line with my aesthetics. No wonder this version of Ripley did not fall in love with her.
Six, supporting actor
The rich second generation of "The Dead in the Wrath" is OK, but the light is completely concealed by Alain Delon, which is really a great tragedy.
The rich second generation of "Genius Ripley" performed even better, and was radiant as a typical rich man when he appeared on the stage. Of course, this may also be because Makodamon is too ugly, reflecting his handsomeness.
"Genius Ripley" also added a new male character, which performed very well.
