The coolest way to die is to die in mid-air

This is the coolest and most tragic way of death I have ever seen, to die in mid-air.

The figure hanging in the air of the man named Tony (Toni Kurz) , is a few meters below the rescue team. However, these few meters have become a huge gully that cannot be crossed.

As an extreme mountaineering enthusiast, Tony died in the mountains, as he deservedly died. His figure dangling in the wind by a rope is just a microcosm of the tragic story behind it, which is the movie "North Wall" that I want to share today.

I am afraid that not many people want to die for the hobby.

But in extreme sports groups, such people can be seen everywhere. They are not tired of life, but are exploring the meaning of life in the limit. Even if you give your life for this, you will die in the hands of life itself.

Especially extreme mountain climbing, full of thrilling adventures that will kill you at any time.

I especially admire the climbers, because I also have the desire to conquer the mountains, but I lost to fear of heights and fear of cold. This sheer bravery made me very interested in this climb in the film.

You may not be familiar with the north face of the Eiger . It is part of the Alps. The climate is changeable, the mountains are steep, and there are often falling rocks and avalanches.

Before 1938, it was never conquered here. On the eve of the Berlin Olympics in 1936, the German government called on German climbers to conquer the northern wall of the Eiger and present their gifts to the Olympics. As the first person to reach the top, he will be regarded as a hero.

Under the agitation of nationalism, this climb attracted good players from all walks of life, and it has also received widespread attention from all parties. Everyone is looking forward to the birth of the first climber.

Tony and Andy (Andreas Hinterstoisser), as mountain-climbing enthusiasts, naturally regard the summit of the north wall as a very high honor.

They are well-trained, full of tacit understanding, rich experience, and their personalities are quite different and complementary.

In the beginning, Tony and Andy had a dispute over whether they really wanted to climb the North Wall. Andy, who has always been confident, doesn't understand Tony's concerns, and breathes at him.

Andy: How long will you have to be a coward before you dare to try? We will be the first to reach the top of the North Wall.

Tony: That's not the purpose of climbing.

Andy: That is. That is the purpose of mountaineering. I want to prove to the world my ability and who I am.

Tony: I don't have to prove anything to anyone, I climb for myself only.

When Andy decided to climb alone, Tony finally followed suit for the safety of his partner.

The stability of the first half makes the various scenery shots look particularly quiet. However, as soon as he entered the mountaineering plot, the director turned his pen and used countless nervous and restrained shots to suddenly show the audience the ruthless side of the north wall.

This change in rhythm immediately increased the sense of being on the scene. The howling storm and the rushing avalanche hit head on, hitting Andy and Tony, as well as my heart.

The result is regrettable, but behind the death of the two of them who have come to the same destination by different routes, there are completely different feelings about death .

Andy wants to challenge death, so he will say when Tony persuades: You are too cautious, climb up, there is the road to Berlin. He would choose to take the initiative to die when the two of them could only live one, and he wanted to see what death was .

Tony has a fear of death, so when he was at 2823 meters, he persuaded Andy to leave the rope in order to have more choices when turning back. When Andy took the initiative to cut the rope to save his life, he would be extremely sad. He will struggle hard when the rescue team comes, but in the end he will leave a sentence: I am so cold .

Andy lives toward death , fights against nature, fate and death, and pursues the ultimate meaning of life, even if he pays the price of life.

Tony is struggling to survive , with his hands and feet cracked and physical exhaustion, struggling. This is the thirst for life, but also the unwillingness to death.

The two of them represent the attitudes of all beings towards death, curious and fearful . Under mutual seesaw, challenge, bravery, sacrifice, indomitable, the most primitive and pure human nature is reflected by the white snow, illuminating the entire human history .

Take another look at this solitary death, this is the most tragic symphony of the brave.

North Face quotes

  • [first lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

Luise Fellner: [voiceover] When you're at the bottom - Toni once told me - at the foot of the wall, and you look up, you ask yourself: How can anyone climb that? Why would anyone even want to? But hours later when you're at the top looking down, you've forgotten everything. Except the one person you promised you would come back to.

  • [last lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

Luise Fellner: [voiceover] All I know is that death spared me, and that Toni went away forever that day. One has lived if one has loved. There are times when I find this infinitely hard to believe. Most days I feel that I am alive. And that love is the reason for that.
