(This is a suspense drama. People with weak mental capacity should be cautious.)
Hello everyone, I am the tour guide today. Please fasten your seat belts. We are about to drive into The Twilight Zone.
Born in 1959, "Yin and Yang Devildom" (also known as: Misty Time and Space) was created by Rod Serlin and acted as the opening host. It can be said to be a very special work in the TV industry in the United States and the world. It appeared in the United States and even the world. The world has set off a wave of sci-fi suspense craze. People who have read previous film reviews may know that I mentioned this show when I talked about "Electronic Dream" and "Black Mirror", because it is obvious that these wonderful series are inspired to some extent by Yin and Yang. Even many contemporary suspense and horror movies can find traces of its influence.
After that, several restarts, and the appearance of the same movie, made this name a super-large IP in the American television industry. Its influence on the film and television industry continues to this day. In the United States, The Twilight Zone can be said to be a household name.
There is a reason to move it out suddenly today.
In April of this year, CBS, the producer of "Yin and Yang Demon World", suddenly launched a new series on April Fool's Day, called The Twilight Zone (translated as: New Yin and Yang Demon World).
The appearance of this drama is not unexpected, because the black mirrors of the past few years have made the limelight, and the electronic dreams are closely followed. There are more and more mini suspense dramas with one story per episode and well-produced. And it will be sooner or later that their originator, Yin Yang Demon Realm, will be put on the screen again.
The new version of Onmyoji has inherited the form of black-and-white TV shows often opened by the host. It is modeled on the original version. One of the screenwriters, Jordan Peel will appear at the appropriate time in every episode to announce that you have entered the Onmyoji, and his appearance is like A curtain opens, and from this, the story begins, and you have no turning back. He is like a devil on the sidelines, only responsible for telling stories, what happened here has nothing to do with him. This form and his low and conclusive narration create a weird and helpless atmosphere for the whole film.
Like Black Mirror, it also has an independent story in each episode, except that Black Mirror is about the future of black technology, and the story of the Yin Yang Devil Realm can be a bizarre event that happens to someone at any time. In the play, they are collectively referred to as a special dimension between light and darkness, between science and superstition, in the deepest abyss of fear and the highest peak of wisdom.
Compared with the future realistic irony of Black Mirror and the pure science fiction of electronic dreams, in this series, the stories are mostly in the modern world (the 1959 version also occurred in the "modern" at the time), bizarre events that happened to the protagonist, whether accidental Entering a special town, or being visited by the god of death, the story brings us into a world like folklore. At the same time, each episode also tells a philosophy of life. The protagonist manipulated by desire or memory through extreme Being taught a lesson, it also gave the audience a chance to reflect on themselves while appreciating the wonderful story. The story is well-made, and the creativity is always very novel and advanced, so even if you read it again today, you will be pleasantly surprised.
The new version is also based on this idea, and these stories are still very sharp. Whether it’s a talk show actor who sells his values in order to get laughter, a reporter who eventually causes an accident in order to track down future accidents, or just a riot caused by not wanting to control his temper. Almost every story will have questions about moral orientation.
It's just that after so many years of digging into science fiction stories and the rapid development of technology, the new version of the story is not as novel as the old version, especially for the audience who loves suspense films, even a bit old-fashioned. Although Yin Yang Devil is a series that is worth restarting, and the new drama is to a large extent a tribute to the old version, but the old film and television companies conservatively adapt the classic path may be going in an outdated direction. The story is still worth watching, but it may be time for the screenwriter to jump out of the “new” to somewhat old-fashioned thinking and look for a new route.
As predicted by Robert McKee, once every new field is popular, it will gradually become old-fashioned. Now, is it the turn of the once tradition to return?
I scored 9.5 points for the old version and 8 points for the new version.
I have said so much today, and we will talk to the lower part.
