About the difference between the two church metal plate numbers

The difference is the numbers "4" and "14".

The first church: 4, 144, 187, 400

The first digital metal plate appeared at the beginning of the movie, and Tomas dominated the entire scene.

The number 4 derives its meaning from creation. On the fourth day of what is called'creation week' God completed the material universe. On this day he brought into existence our sun, the moon, and all the stars (Genesis 1:14- 19). Their purpose was not only to give off light, but also to divide the day from the night on earth, thus becoming a basic demarcation of time. They were also made to be a type of signal that would mark off the days, years and seasons.

The "4" here is simply a "start" (and all the meanings that the word can extend).

The second church: 14, 144, 187, 400

The last three rows of numbers on the second metal plate remain unchanged, except that the first row has changed from "4" to "14". Near the end of the movie, Tomas has already informed Karin of his husband's death, arrives at the second church to preside over the service, and accepts the final questioning of Algot.

Being a multiple of 7, 14 partakes of its importance and, being double that number, implies a double measure of spiritual perfection.
The fourteenth day of the first month is the Passover, when God delivered the firstborn of Israel from death. Some 430 years earlier, on the night of the 14th day of the first month, God made two covenant promises to Abraham — one of the physical seed, Isaac, and his descendants, and one of the spiritual seed, Jesus Christ, and the sons of God who would come through Him, who would shine like the stars of heaven (Matthew 13:43). On the day portion of the 14th, God confirmed the promises with a special covenant sacrifice.

So here "14" I understand as sacrifice and salvation.

But I also saw a Christian who summed up the number "14" on his blog as "RIGHTEOUS: Virgins, Widows, Orphans"-this reflects Karin's situation to some extent. If this is intentional, it is Bergman's hidden kindness.

Care for widows and orphans . The Christian congregation has traditionally cared for the poor, the sick, widows , and orphans . The Letter of James says: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction .

1963, Bergman. The second part of the trilogy of silence, watching crying has been reluctant to mark it. You have created my strong body and experience, but you have never given me a mission worthy of my strength/That is his greatest pain, Lord's silence. /(Pastor vs. Female Teacher)/Every time I hate you, I try to turn it into compassion, which you can't do/Being allowed to live for someone, it's hard.

Bergman has a unique way of explaining belief and doubt. Even the knowledge of Jesus on the cross doubts God's instructions, let alone others. The so-called middle work of the so-called trilogy that I picked up occasionally is not very immersive. It is so-called further research, and it will be better to continue after reading the other two when I have time.

Winter Light quotes

  • Tomas Ericsson, Pastor: If there is no God, would it really make any difference? Life would become understandable. And this death would be a snuffing out of life. The dissolution of body and soul. Cruelty, loneliness and fear - all these things would be straightforward and transparent. Suffering is incomprehensible, so it needs no explanation.

  • Tomas Ericsson, Pastor: There is no creator. No sustainer of life. No design.
