Regarding the London Gold Award rules and Queensbury Rules in the film
British boxer Jack Broughton established a set of rules in 1743. The basic premise of the Broughton rule and the subsequent London prize ring rule is that the round of battle will last until one person falls. There is a 30-second rest period between each round. After the rest period, each boxer has 8 seconds to reach the "scratch line" in the middle of the ring. When the battle is about to end, one of the fighters cannot stand or reach the scratch line.
The British rules changed in the 1860s. John Douglas was a nobleman and athlete. He held the title of Marquis of Queensbury. He established a set of rules for the use of padded gloves. The new rules came into use in the United States in the 1880s.
