Swaying, muddled

I was expecting a biographical film of such a famous artist, but I was very disappointed at the beginning. The camera dangled from the beginning. During the dialogue between Van Gogh and Gauguin, the camera began to face Van Gogh and waited until Gauguin spoke. Shi turned his head to face Gauguin, like a third-rate news photographer’s mirror, he was in a hurry, and he was in a hurry. Besides, Van Gogh walked alone in front and the camera followed. I guess the director wanted to be realistic and let the audience follow the protagonist. The footsteps and the angle of view, but people walking is not so bumpy, if the motion sickness viewers will be shaken by you at this moment.

Another thing to complain about is the age of the actor. Van Gogh committed suicide at 37 and died young, but the starring looks at least 60, right? Is there really no actor?

It's really a bit of a drama for all European artists to speak American English... The whole movie has a feeling of "trying hard to get to the heart of the characters but it's useless". Of course, most things in life are like this. Even Van Gogh himself was out of tune with the world. Why did this movie feel like it was talking about itself. Willem Dafoe is still very charming, and he doesn't seem to have any sense of incongruity when he plays various archetypes that look completely different from him.

It's actually very good, the script and the picture are stable, and Dafoe is even more stable. [B]

At Eternity's Gate quotes

  • Vincent Van Gogh: I believe I have a menacing spirit around me. An invisible being. I feel it, I don't see it. He speaks to me and threatens me. And all he wants to do is plunge a knife into my heart. I saw him and I tried to cut him out of myself.

Doctor Felix Ray: So that's the reason why you cut off your ear. Your vision of the world, as you say, is quite frightening, isn't it?

Vincent Van Gogh: Yes. I'm terrified he'll come back.

  • Paul Gauguin: In other words, you want to re-establish a hierarchy! Those who command and those who obey!
