Castle

As we all know, in Kafka's "Castle", K has exhausted various ways and kept dealing with various characters, but in the end he still couldn't enter the castle. Nearly fifty years later, the J (Johan) couple in "The Jackal Hour" unexpectedly received an invitation to enter the castle while living on an isolated island.

This is not just a literal coincidence. J gained the power of a demon by killing a child who represented his childhood image, which Kafka’s K had never done. K is destined to be unable to enter the castle, because the inside of the castle is completely empty. The only way to enter the castle is to escape from real life, and then meet the surviving inhabitants of the castle-the ghosts of our fathers.

In this regard, the attempt of "The Jackal Hour" is really an overstepping. Kafka has carefully hinted to us the fact that there is nothing in the center of power, but only low-level officials and villagers who actively cooperate with the center. Therefore, K, who is full of realistic fighting spirit, cannot enter the castle, and his real battlefield is outside the castle. However, Bergman's J obtained this impossible testimony through a murder, by disconnecting himself from the world.

So J saw some boring zombies and vampires. The truth is not scary at all, only boring. There are various horror effects in the film, just because J is still resisting.

In the end, we can say that "The Jackal Moment" proves the proposition of "Castle" in an extreme form.

Hour of the Wolf quotes

  • Johan Borg: I thank you. The limit has at last been reached. The glass is shattered, but what do the splinters reflect? Can you tell me that?

  • Alma Borg: There's one thing I've been puzzling over. Are you in a big hurry? I'd like to ask you something. It's this. Is it true that a woman who lives a long time with a man, eventually winds up being like that man? I mean, she loves him and tries to think like him and see like him. They say that it can change a person.
