The true story of "Aftermath of the Air Crash"

I feel obligated to write an article. After all, there are not many film friends who are familiar with air traffic control. Besides, Arnold has to give the leading role at least once. "Aftermath of the Air Crash" is adapted from real events, and reality is the power of this film.

On the night of July 1, 2002, the Uberlingen air crash occurred over the border between Switzerland and Germany. Two planes collided in the air and 71 people were killed. This is one of the most tragic aerial collisions in history.

"Aftermath of the Air Crash" is adapted based on this real event. Perhaps to avoid stinging the parties, the film moves the story from Switzerland to the United States, but the plot is basically the same as the real event.

Roman played by Arnold is the foreman of the construction site. The real version of the character is called Vitali Karoyev, an architect from North Ossetia, Russia. In the movie, Roman himself went to the scene of the crash to find people. In reality, Karoyev was also the first family member to arrive at the scene and participated in the search and rescue activities of the air crash. He found a string of damaged necklaces belonging to his daughter Diana; and personally discovered the almost complete body of his daughter who had fallen into a forest and was buffered by branches. The body of his wife Svetlana was found in a field of wheat; the body of his son Constantine was found on an asphalt road next to a bus waiting hall in Uberlingen. This is very similar to the plot of the movie.

Some film critics say that the movie is too fake and it is unlikely that there will be a complete body, but this is the real situation. The process of the air crash in the film is also highly consistent with reality.

We know that an accident often occurs because multiple links are not done well, and a single link usually does not lead to serious consequences like an air crash. This series of problem links form an accident chain.

The equipment of the tower in the film is undergoing technical maintenance, which causes the equipment to enter standby mode and the main telephone system fails. The real incident occurred in the Swiss Air Traffic Management Company (SkyGuide), which was also a technical maintenance. The air traffic control department is equipped with a mid-term collision avoidance warning system, which can detect flight conflicts about 2.5 minutes in advance. Due to routine maintenance, the system was shut down and the duty controller Peter Nielsen did not know it. This was the No. 1 accident chain.

The airspace of the collision was on the border between Germany and Switzerland. German radars had already found that something was wrong, but the dedicated line of the Swiss Air Traffic Control Center was temporarily cut off due to maintenance work. The Germans can only watch the plane collide. This is the No. 2 accident chain.

In the movie, there was only one controller on the tower, and his colleague went to rest after a few words. In the real incident, the Swiss control center was also a controller, and his colleagues were resting next door. This is not in compliance with the regulations, but it has been acquiesced for a long time. This is the No. 3 accident chain.

To make matters worse, this controller is responsible for directing two airspaces at the same time, using two radio frequencies, and using a faulty phone to coordinate special flights. When I was on the phone, I couldn't hear the call from the plane. It wasn't until the last minute that the planes were about to collide! This is the No. 4 accident chain. The plot of the film is consistent with the reality.

Here is a lethal detail not shown in the film. Passenger aircrafts are now equipped with an air collision avoidance warning system, which will notify the pilot when an air collision is about to occur. This is the last defense at the gate of hell.

When the controller finally discovered the flight conflict, he immediately commanded the Russian airliner to descend. At this time, the collision avoidance warning system on the plane reminded the pilot to ascend and avoid.

Rise or fall? Between life and death.

Perhaps because of the nature of the fighting nation, or perhaps because of the regulations, the Russian pilots finally chose to listen to the controller's decline. After all, the controller is responsible if something goes wrong. At the same time, another German aircraft was also descending altitude. He was executing the instructions of the collision avoidance system. The two planes have fallen into one piece! This is the No. 5 accident chain.

The two aircraft could finally see each other 3.8 seconds before the collision, and the Russian crew immediately climbed to the flight altitude, but it was too late. In the end, the two airliners collided at an altitude of about 10,600 meters. The vertical tail of the German DHL Boeing 757 freighter swept across the fuselage of the Russian Figure 154. The Figure 154 passenger plane exploded and disintegrated into two sections. The German plane lost control and continued to fly for 7 kilometers. Its right-wing engine exploded and separated from the wing before the crash. Two minutes later, it crashed on a mountainside. A total of 71 passengers and crew members on the two flights were killed.

It is embarrassing that most of the passengers are the best children from Ufa, Russia. They have amazing talents in different fields. This time they were selected to participate in the activities organized by UNESCO in Barcelona, Spain.

The International Civil Aviation Organization issued guidance to member states after the air crash to avoid a repeat of the tragedy. The Civil Aviation Administration of China now requires that equipment maintenance must be approved by the controller; the air traffic control unit has a dual-post system, where one person directs the aircraft, one person is responsible for supervision, and there is another person who calls to coordinate affairs. The transfer of shifts must overlap for 10 minutes. Go; when the controller's instructions conflict with the requirements of the airborne collision avoidance system, the collision avoidance system must be followed.

So it is safe to fly today. Of course, there are also factors of insecurity. In recent years, the number of domestic flights has increased by double digits. Airlines have hired a large number of Taiwanese and foreign pilots, but the number of available controllers has not increased much. Because air traffic control is a public institution, it cannot recruit people from abroad. The training period is long and the replenishment is slow, and there are people who are overwhelmed and leave, making the situation worse. Originally, air traffic control work requires a high degree of concentration, and the working hours should be less than ordinary work. However, it is said that in some places in the southern and central regions, the time intensity is not beyond the stipulation of the "Labor Law"...

Of course, the overall situation is still very safe. After all, there are many advanced equipment and strict safety measures. Controllers are paid higher, welcome to apply for air traffic control professional Barabara...

Back to the film, Arnold stabbed the controller. The audience was angry that the script was unreasonable: no matter who it was at the time, it was impossible to guarantee that something went wrong, okay? The workload exceeds individual capacity, and the entire department is responsible.

Ran and luan.

Two years after the Uberlingen air crash, the grief-stricken Karoyev stabbed the Swiss controller to death. Under the watchful eyes of the deceased’s wife and children, he waved helplessly the pictures of his family.

The reality is unreasonable.

Afterword:

After being released from prison, Karoyev returned to Russia and was welcomed by the road. The locals called it a "real man." Switzerland holds negative comments on this. He later served as Deputy Minister of Construction of the Republic of North Ossetia.

While attending an event commemorating the tenth anniversary of the air crash in Germany, Karoyev was arrested by the German police because he was on the Swiss immigration watch list. After negotiations with the Russian consul, he was released on the condition that a Russian diplomat escorted him.

    Christina: Ishmael?

    Jake: Yeah.

Christina: That's a weird name for a bear.

Jake: And when we took trips I always had to take him with me or I wouldn't be able to sleep. This went on 'til much, much later.

Christina: How much later? 'Til you were 24? 'Til you met me?

    Jake: I don't know.

Christina: You always say that you can't sleep without me.

    Jake: Yeah, that's true.

Christina: I just don't know what to think.

    Jake: What?

Christina: Is that all I am to you? Some lousy substitute for Ishmael?

Jake: Hey, being Ishmael's substitute is a big honor. I'd do anything for Ishmael.

Christina: Did you have sex with Ishmael?

    Christina: I'm late for work.
