Growth is never easy

Growth has never been an easy task. This is the first thought that came to my mind after watching "Thumbsucker".
Justin is a 17-year-old high school student, but he can't get rid of the bad habit of thumb sucking. Can you imagine a big boy who is about to enter the adult ranks, squatting on the toilet seat and sucking his thumb after being wronged? Maybe you will think it is absurd and exaggerated, but such things happen in real-we will all be confused and lost; it's just that everyone faces it in a different way. Justin sucks his thumb, maybe you hide in a quiet place. Cry for a while, maybe she will turn the earphone volume to the maximum and stay alone in her own world... Before we grow up, we are all running away.
When you are timid, uneasy, embarrassed, or inferior, sucking your thumb is essentially self-protection, and it is also a way to escape from difficult situations, reduce stress and vent. Thumb sucking is just a manifestation of habit. It may also be scratching your hair or drinking continuously.
When you are confident, courageous, positive, and aggressive, taking pills is essentially seeking dependence, enough to support your inner weakness. A pill is just chicken soup for the soul, even if it is just a pill of vitamin C.
Justin swallowed the pills with confidence. All doubts and fears were thrown away, his potential was activated, and he felt like an invincible warrior, with enough courage to stand on his own. But once the effect is over? He went back to the chaotic, cautious boy. This kind of drama is really ironic, but it is so empathetic. Who is not confused at the age of 17?
We never know what will be prepared for us in the future. Every day is different and unfamiliar. When we were young, we were carefree and didn’t need to think about so many disturbing issues, but one day, you will suddenly find that you no longer cry and ask your parents to help you, and no longer entangled things so easily. Tell the people around you, so many people won’t understand you anymore. On that day, you will suddenly find that you have already stood on the tail of youth, already a little adult. However, you are not ready yet, even though you have a tall stature and a mature face, you are still a child at heart. "Growing older" and "growth are really two completely different things." You start to be confused, panic, and want to escape from these sudden changes. You don't have the courage to face those difficult problems. But life always forces a person to grow so cruelly. When you had a conflict with your roommate for the first time because of the inconsistency of work and rest, you understood that you are no longer the little princess in the family who is dependent on you; for the first time, your friends around you are busy with their own affairs and have no time to take care of them. When you, you understand that everyone has their own life; the first time you went to the hospital alone after you fell ill at school, and you dare not let your parents know about it, you understand that growing up also means loneliness. In other words, independence. You start to learn to live alone-go to the bustling cafeteria to eat alone, and no longer feel embarrassed not to be with friends; eat professional books by yourself, instead of asking others whenever you encounter problems, now you will First think about it; if you take care of yourself, you will also learn to care about your parents and others.
But the real growth is much longer and more grueling than the words describe. What we can do is to "live with stateless answers." When facing so many strange things, don't suck your thumb in panic, trust the guardian animal in your heart, it will give you enough courage and intelligence to solve them. No matter how painful and helpless the process is, you will definitely gain something in the final ending, because life is like this, you will always get something in the end, likes and dislikes, those are all on the way to growth. Brilliant pearls, stick to it, and you will have the entire gorgeous necklace. Just like Justin galloping on the New York Avenue, you will also gallop on the wheat field of your dreams.

Thumbsucker quotes

  • [Justin lays back in the dentist chair talking to Dr. Perry]

Dr. Perry Lyman: Justin, do they teach you about the subconscious at school?

    Justin Cobb: A little.

Dr. Perry Lyman: Ever heard of subconscious pressure? Involuntary behaviors?

Justin Cobb: Like a serial killer.

Dr. Perry Lyman: Perhaps. Justin, all of us carry a certain weight. A weight we don't recognize. Some of us have heavy loads.

    Justin Cobb: In our minds.

Dr. Perry Lyman: Yeah. A force from inside. We don't know it's name but it makes us do things. Things we don't like to admit.

  • [Justin draws while his little brother Joel bothers him with questions about girls]

Joel Cobb: You never even had a girlfriend.

    Justin Cobb: So what?

Joel Cobb: You don't even hang out with girls. You just, like, hang out with your nerdy friends.

Justin Cobb: No, I - I do hang out with girls.

Joel Cobb: Really? But how come you never bring any over here? Or I never, like, see you walking with any, or anything? I just see you walking by yourself.

Justin Cobb: Why do you care, Joel?

Joel Cobb: I don't know. 'Cause I'm bored. All the guys in your grade have probably fucked girls. You haven't even kissed one.

    Justin Cobb: Leave.

    Joel Cobb: No.
