Can be regarded as the sequel to "Dogtown" Dogtown talks about individuals and Mandalay is about groups

Grace found a small town where there were still slaves. She tried to restore people's freedom and reformed in the town. However, the slaves who were freed had no orders from the slave owner. She didn't seem to know what she should do anymore. She had nothing to do and even the production was waiting for others. Production plan, these free people don’t know how to use it. Grace wants them to go to class, but no one wants to use force to coerce it to continue.

Later, she discovered that the reason why the town still used slavery 70 years after the liberation of the slaves was because they did not want to go so fast. The people outside were not ready to accept them, nor were they not ready to live outside and leave the prison in a hurry. The cage is incapable of life, it can only be worse

Grace thinks that democracy and freedom are better, so she uses force to impose on them, but she doesn't know that it's not good for them. There is a huge difference between theory and reality. People always do all kinds of bad things without knowing it.

Manderlay quotes

  • Grace's Father: [in his letter] I hope we meet up some day so you can tell what you actually meant by, new times at Manderly. Love, your dumb old dad.

  • Grace's Father: Now, they will not admit it, but it's a fact. Deep down inside, there isn't a woman alive who doesn't nurture these fantasies... whether they involve harems, being hunted through the jungle by torch-bearing natives. However much they go on and on about civilization and democracy, sexy it ain't.
