The ambition of the script is quite big. The exotic voodoo/zombie theme is actually enough to attract attention. The director also embeds a political thriller plot in this Cult-rich story, and satirizes the dictatorship of the Haitian military government. But the integration of political elements is still a little bit out of touch with the clue of witchcraft. The criticism of the political metaphor part is a bit out of focus, and it feels like the director's own bad taste or a deliberately designed commercial gimmick. This is the most regrettable point.
However, the director's best part is not bad at all. There are several scenes that are quite frightening, which proves once again that Wes Craven, the master of horror, is not based on blowing it out.
