First, introduce the initial setting of the whole story, The protagonist is an old man Zev who is 90 years old. At the beginning of the film, he wakes up and calls his wife Ruth, and then slowly discovers that he has transient amnesia. After the patient wakes up from sleep, the most recent memory will be erased). Then, while having breakfast, I ran into another old man Max. (I think Zev and Max had a certain friendship at the time, otherwise Zev would not be so convinced, and Max would not know about Ruth).
At this time they had a few simple conversations. Max cut into Ruth's topic and made Zev feel that he was protecting himself with amnesia and helped him write down all the things Zev thought should be done. Probably as follows: Max asked him, do you remember what you said you would definitely do when your wife was leaving. Zev thought for a while and answered No. At this time Max said, it's okay, it's okay. You have amnesia, I have written it for you so that you won't forget it. Immediately following Max's fake cough (I believe it is fake), he moved away from Zev. For Zev, who loves his wife deeply, those words are very responsible for him and have to be completed, so that night, Zev went to take the initiative to find Max. Max unsurprisingly passed the "script" to Zev.
The beginning of the movie perfectly showed the beginning of a conspiracy. There was no room for complaints, and it went on smoothly. The process of finding criminals has been dull and climax, passing the Canadian security check, being taken out of the gun while buying clothes, embracing and crying with surviving Jews in the hospital, or encountering the wrong admirer of Nazism. The episodes one after another made the audience sweat for Zev. There are also many clues in the film. For example, the conversation with the little boy on the train shows that he remembers him as "Wolf", echoing another fact that Nazi uttered at the end of the film.
As a Zev who was told to be a Jew, drinking whiskey in the family of Nazi activists, listening to the "Nazi son" constantly showing off the great achievements of the "Nazi father", I don't know how entangled in his psychological activities. When talking with that son, and the dog that kept roaring, Zev's hands were shaking, and his forehead was sweaty. But in the end he was killed by mistake. However, he who hated the Nazis should have no sympathy for the wrong killing. (After watching the ending, this is so sad. But the Nazis should be killed.)
Then the most exciting part is the ending part, which is simply a continuous reversal. In two warm families, the younger generations are innocent anyway. It is really heartbreaking for two 90-year-old old people to expose such ugly history in front of their younger generations. Without knowing it, Zev finally found the person he was looking for, and finally got revenge, and finally heard the facts he wanted to hear. The result was slapped by the facts. The Nazis who were found gave out their real name "Kunibert Sturm" and at the same time the protagonist Zev's real name "Otto Wallisch".
The real story was also told to the audience. Zev, who we always thought was a Jew, followed him to find the hated Nazis, and empathized with him. Unexpectedly, he was a Nazi. He was the one who killed countless people and was expecting to kill. It was him who felt vengeful, it was him who had mixed feelings with the Jews, and it was him who fought with the Nazi family, and in the end he suddenly switched from the Jewish camp to the Nazi side. He admitted this because he said "I remember." An unacceptable memory made him resolutely choose to commit suicide.
The old people's acting skills are very good, and the BGM has a great sense of conspiracy. However, the story is indeed so sad. Zev at the time of amnesia is actually an old man who loves to laugh and love children. I think he does not have the "sense of mission" given to him, and he should be able to live a silly old age. But as an old saying goes, you always have to pay back what you owe. You need revenge, and others need revenge.
