The Salt of the Earth

When the word photographer was spoken in Greek at the beginning of the documentary, I knew I would like this documentary very much.

Sebastian’s experience reminds me of Maugham’s "Moon and Sixpence" as the protagonist in the image of Gao. People who dare to give up everything they have and start over, their courage has already made them half the success. .

Several important topics (too lazy to write, just pick it up)

“Workers finally united the economist Sebastian and the artist he had become. The pictures appeared in most of the great magazines, the exhibition travelled all over the world and the book came out in many languages. ”

“But Sebastian and Lilia wouldn't rest , they immediately started to work on another major phase of his photography. They realized that one of the burning subjects of our times was the displacement of entire populations by wars, famines and the roles of global market place. So while Europe was starting to close its borders, Sebastian was trying to shed a light on the fates of the outcast. Again, he and Lilia did all the research and planning together, and again she was the driving force behind this new chapter in their lives which they called Exodus. ”

"Sebastian had seen into the heart of darkness. He deeply questioned his work as a social photographer and witness of the human condition. What was left for him to do after Rwanda?"

Theme of death is too heavy I can not mention, but students Joy can still be said. Many scenes are particularly moving. For example, Sebastian was very happy holding the tree he planted, and said that when he could grow so thick in 30 years, his proud expression was like talking about his own child. When I returned to my residence, I showed the young saplings that had just sprouted. They were not as big as small bean sprouts. When they said that these trees can grow to 40 meters high and can live for four to five hundred years, it really makes people feel the magical power of life.

This story about miracles cured Sebastian's despair in Africa and was able to continue his career as a photographer. The transition from a humanities photographer to a landscape photographer opened the door to a new world for Sebastian. "I want to understand Darwin's set. The same creatures have very different evolutionary states in different ecosystems. When I saw the details of the claws of a lizard, I couldn't help but think of the hand of a medieval knight. They use metal scales to protect themselves."

"Genesis took Sebastian around the globe once more for almost a decade. And he's gonna show us nature, animals, places and peoples that were like the beginning of time, and a much more optimistic view of the same planet that Sebastian had witnessed for so long has damaged and destroyed. Genesis was gonna be their ??, a love letter to the planet. ”

“This land is too important to me. We have formed a cycle of this land. In this cycle, we save A life passed, my parents’ life, my sister’s life, most of my life. Today, we are living here again, Lilia and I. This land has been telling our stories, and it has witnessed my Childhood, accompanied my old age. When I die, this forest will return to the state I was born in. The whole cycle is complete. This is the story of my life."

Thanks to this documentary, I got to know a photographer and the story behind him about despair and hope.

The Salt of the Earth quotes

  • Sebastião Salgado - Photographer: We are a ferocious animal. We humans are terrible animals. Our history is a history of wars. It's an endless story, a tale of madness.

  • Sebastião Salgado - Photographer: To think that these three-month-old trees will reach their apex in 400 years. Perhaps from there we could try to grasp the concept of eternity. Maybe eternity is measurable.
