Give the truth a little more time

A murder case fifteen years ago involved two smash hits – Lanney and Vince. The fledgling reporter O’Connor was working for the interview with Vince (or to understand these two in depth). The spiritual idol who helped her overcome polio in her childhood) and investigated this bizarre incident. From the beginning of the film, following the reporter’s investigative experience, the whole thing is slowly revealed. There is no complicated cross-editing, only Vince’s slightly heavy memories and Lanny’s unruly tone of chanting help little by little. The audience went back to the night fifteen years ago. The low-key narrative is often to bring out the complexity of the character's heart, so the focus of this movie is not the unexpectedness of the truth and the unconstrained narrative skills, but the human nature.

A waitress named Maureen was found dead in the hotel room of Lanny and Vince. The night before, they had just completed the 39-hour continuous live broadcast of comedy shows. O'Connor was there as a little guest. A speech was made during the performance. Since that incident, the golden partner Lanny and Vince parted ways, no one knows what happened. The truth was concealed by people in different ways. In order to prevent Vince and Lanney from being affected, Sally, the owner of the hotel, bribed the police to declare that the deceased had committed suicide, while Lanney and Vince also believed that the murderer was each other.

As two well-known comedian partners, maybe they are brothers and sisters or admiring each other, no one can tell, they said nothing about what happened this evening for the purpose of protecting each other. Ironically, the root cause of this sacrifice is their own self-righteous speculation, and they don't know whether to be moved by this commendable friendship or for the two people who made it. They all thought that they had seen the facts thoroughly, and at the same time they made their own decisions to keep "secrets" for each other. This "self-produced and self-sold stupidity" is also reflected at the end of Ang Lee's "Wedding Banquet", which makes people feel that the reality is too unkind and touch the softness of human nature. Even if this "truth" of one's own will never be discovered, the other party will support it at all costs.

At the end of the movie, under the tree that grew up with the ashes of Maureen, when Lanny said with tears in her memory that "forgive me" came into O'Connor's mind, she must have understood at that moment. It's the intention of Lanny and Vince to conceal the truth. Although Lanney is not a gentleman, he is definitely not a shameless bastard. O'Connor also understands the tenderness of Lanney when looking at herself, because she is also preparing to do so, she will never bear the heart to destroy a report with a report. For the rest of my mother’s life.

She decided to give the truth more time.

Where the Truth Lies quotes

  • Karen: [voice in her head] What have they done?

    [narrating, ominously]

Karen: Once upon a time, when terrible things happened to people, they were left as a mystery. Even the tabloids kept a distance. Some things... were allowed to be left just the way they were...

  • Maureen: The question is: Who's gonna pay me?

Lanny Morris: [narrating] That surprised me. The girl was not a hooker.

    [walks into his bedroom]

Lanny Morris: My wallet was on top of my robe. I took out some money, I don't remember how much.

[walks slowly back to the living room, where she is lying on the couch, offering her blanket, which she accepts, pulling it slowly up over her naked body, then offering her the pay-off]

Maureen: [softly] I don't think so.

Lanny Morris: That's more than you would make in a month of tips.

Maureen: I'm not looking for a tip.

Lanny Morris: What the hell are you saying?

Maureen: Honey, I'm in my last year of college. This is my summer job... Er... I wanna write. I wanna be a journalist... If I could either use this information, or I could use a lot of money. I promise you this will only cost you once.

[he nods, and she sleepily settles back on the couch]

    Maureen: I'm so tired, I don't even think I'm going home. I think it's the two-in-alls.

[as she is about to drift off:]

Maureen: Hey, Lanny, don't take it personally. You were a great lover. You have got the cutest little butt.

    [sighs, smiles]

Maureen: I guess Vince thought so too. Bye, Lanny.

Lanny Morris: [narrating, as she falls asleep] I would never see her alive again.

    [walks to door]

Lanny Morris: I put a do-not-disturb sign on my door, fastened the chain lock in case the maid didn't read, I left a wake-up call for eight, and went to sleep knowing that a telethon was the least of the ordeals I was going to have to face in the morning.
