I can hardly believe that there are people like Bruno in real life, but Phoenix's performance makes this character very real. You can feel his innocence and his deep affection. Although he is a pimp, his feelings are actually very simple. Many people wonder why he forced the prostitute to be a prostitute. I think that on the one hand, this is the only way he can raise money for the prostitute. He is just a pimp, and he has no other way to make money; secondly, he thinks Keeping the heroine by his side is a terrible desire to control, but it is his way of "love". You can compare the difference between Phoenix's performance in her and this movie. The two characters have "infatuation" in common, but the difference can be clearly seen. The former has a strong sense of loneliness and a little innocence, while the latter has a kind of perseverance and accidents. Phoenix's performance is just right, and every detail from the voice to the expression is great.
Marion is so beautiful in the play, no wonder the brothers turned against each other. And her performance is really nothing to say. I'm going to compare again. Her roles in this drama and in "Two Days and One Night" have a lot of begging scenes, but you can see the difference in her performance. In this film, she mostly "takes the initiative" to ask for help, because she wants to save her sister and she knows exactly what she wants. But "Two Days and One Night" is very different. She is more "passive" to ask for help because of her livelihood. She often has no hope. Marion's eyes and tone in the two movies are slightly different, which is really powerful.
JR is really not suitable for this movie. Both the accent and the style are incompatible with the movie. Being a JR fan really disappointed me.
The picture of the film is really beautiful, it adds a lot to the film, there is a strong sentimental and light poetry. The shot of Marion entering the confessional and the last shot in the opposite direction are impressive.
This is not a movie that everyone will love, but both the performance and the pictures are pleasing to the eye, four-star recommendation.
