The current Governor of Canada is David Johnston, formerly the President of the University of Waterloo. David was born and raised in Sudbury, a mining city in Ontario, the nickel capital of Canada. David, who was born in the home of civilians, got a scholarship to enter Harvard University with a chance to become a speciality in ice hockey, and became a good friend of the original novel author of the film. The hockey part of the movie was created based on David Johnston. However, it has not been widely recognized.

Segal and Johnston, while not lifelong pals, were in the same dorm at Harvard and would go for runs together.

“He built (Love Story) around characters that we knew,” Johnston told The Sault Star in an interview after Segal's death. “We had no idea that he, in fact, was writing his novel while we were living across from him and running with him at 6:30 in the morning along the banks of the Charles River. Life is filled with unusual things."

Segal himself said that the prototype was former US Vice President Al Gore and actor Tommy Lee Jones.
