film won the Golden Lion Award at the 59th Venice Film Festival in 2002.
The film tells the story of the persecution of three young girls in the asylum of the monastery. The three girls were sent to live in a bad girl shelter opened by a church. Girl A was raped by her cousin, girl B was seduce an outside boy in school, and girl C became pregnant because she was unmarried. After the three girls came to the shelter, like the other girls, they washed their clothes every day. A and B are reluctant to stay here. A intends to escape late at night, but when he sees a girl who is beaten back by her father after running home, she dismisses the idea. After B made out with the boy outside the church, he asked him to help take her away at night, and the boy agreed. At night, the girl escaped from the room and came to the door, but the boy did not open the door because of scruples. After the incident, B was severely punished-cutting his hair. After some time passed, a girl D in the church caught herself with a cold. When she had a fever, she lost her only accessory that had contact with her son, and B found it. A takes care of C to rest, and promises D to help her retrieve the accessories. In the middle of the night, B decided to return the accessories to D after seeing D committing suicide, but then changed his mind. The next day, D threatened A to let her retrieve the accessories, otherwise he would report her. In a fit of anger, A rummaged through the beds of all the girls and found ornaments. Later, when the church organized the girls to entertain, A found that she could escape, but she did not leave. Later, A made hands and feet on the priest's clothes, which made both the priest and D itchy and embarrassed in public. For this reason, the abbot sent D to a mental hospital, even if she resisted stubbornly. Four years later, A's younger brother has grown up and took A away with a letter, but the other girls will continue to stay in the monastery. One day, an old woman died in the monastery. B was terrified. That night, she decided to run away with C. In the evening, B and C smashed open the door, pried open the dean's office, and planned to find the key to the door. At this time, the dean appeared to compete with B, but when he saw C take out the key to the vault, the dean gave up. Later, the two girls escaped from the monastery and met a kind woman. Finally, the two changed into modern clothes and started a normal life, and B was no longer afraid of nuns.
This film is another film reflecting the darkness of the church. Through the misfortunes of the four girls in the asylum, it shows religious hypocrisy, licentiousness, lust and perversion, etc., as well as the ignorance and backwardness of the Catholic country of Ireland. Regarding the theme, there is no need to say more, all are reflected in the plot. For example, the priests and nuns’ male thieves and prostitutes, the dean’s pursuit of money, the corporal punishment of the nuns on the girls in the asylum, the harsh system, the lewd and perverted nude competitions, etc., all show that the church is a nasty and dirty one. So, it has nothing to do with holiness at all. In addition, through the reasons why the three girls entered the asylum, we can also see the status of Irish women in society, the persecution of people by the Catholic Church, and the ignorance and stupidity of rural families. Why did the three girls enter the monastery? Because they were raped, because they said a few more words with the boy, because they were unmarried and conceived! These are nothing to modern society, but in the 1960s in Ireland, it became a crime. It's ridiculous! In short, on the one hand, this film shows the cruelty, oppression, and sordidness of church shelters; on the other hand, it shows the absurdity and backwardness of Ireland as a country. Simply put, this film is a film that reflects history.
As for the way B versus D in the film, why not return her accessories? In my opinion, it is a vengeful mentality. She cannot retaliate against the nun, she can only vent it elsewhere, otherwise she will not be able to bear it. This blame D is so unlucky that he met a woman with a vengeful heart and a vicious heart. Of course, A is not much better, she framed the priest, and D was collateral damage. But when D was about to be sent away, A kept silent in order to protect himself. All this caused D to die in a mental hospital. From these two points, we can see that under high-pressure rule, people are not normal, and will do some immoral things more or less. If you think more in this direction, you will come to a conclusion-people are not perfect.
The filming is quite well-formed and has no unique features, but the scene of the girls appearing naked in the film is very shocking, because it is so unexpected. It is an accident that there are so many naked women in movies that are obviously not related to sex! However, few of these women are in good shape, and all women have asymmetrical breasts. Therefore, through this film, I have learned another fact-women's breasts under natural conditions are mostly asymmetrical! It seems that this is not only "knowledge" but also fact. As for women's pubic hair, it is extremely ugly, making people unable to mention any "sexual interest", but this can also lead to a conclusion-blonde women's pubic hair is almost not pure golden. It seems that the race is too mixed now, and the real blonde woman has disappeared. In short, there is nothing outstanding about the filming of this film, only a naked scene of church licentiousness impressed me.
The actors in this film also performed well, and there is nothing to say about their acting skills. It is worth mentioning the makeup of the three heroines Nora-Jane Noone, Anne-Marie Duff, and Dorothy Duffy. For most of the film, the three of them are face-to-face, without makeup at all, so they look very ordinary and not beautiful at all. However, after the three of them simply put on makeup and changed their hairstyles at the end of the movie, they were totally different! Especially, Nora-Jane Noone and Dorothy Duffy can be called beautiful women. Therefore, I came to another conclusion-there are very few real beauties, and most of the beautiful girls are set off by makeup, styling and lighting! The other people in the film are all tricks, not to mention it.
in conclusion. This is a film that reflects history, letting the audience know deeply that Ireland once had such a side. Hey, this is the "benefits" of Catholicism. In addition, I have come to a lot of conclusions from this film, as follows:
people are not perfect
women's breasts under natural conditions, most asymmetric
blonde women have almost no pure golden pubic hair, there
are few real beauties, and most beautiful girls are Make-up, styling and lighting set off
