Missing (1982) This
film won the Palme d'Or at the 35th Cannes Film Festival in 1982.
The movie tells the story of a man missing. A couple lived in a certain country in South America, and the man worked in a newspaper. They lived happily. A friend came to the husband and wife as a guest, so the man took the friend to travel. During the trip, a coup took place in this country, and the two were trapped in the tourist destination. During the period of being trapped, the man got to know several American soldiers and embassy staff, learned some things, and made detailed records. After a while, the man and his friends returned to their place of residence. In the course of this coup, the soldiers wanted to kill people, and after the curfew they killed people, all these made the couple want to leave here and return to the United States. So, the man sent his friend to the airport, and the woman went to visit his friend. After seeing her friends, the woman didn't get on the bus, and had to hide for one night in the middle of the curfew. After returning home, the woman found that the house had been smashed and heard from the neighbor that her husband was taken away by a group of soldiers. In this way, in the next period of time, fathers of men came to this country to find friends with women. The two sought help from the U.S. Embassy. The embassy staff was very cooperative on the surface, but they always found nothing. The father and the woman also searched for themselves, and found their friend's body during the search. Later, the father learned through a businessman that his son had been shot three days after being arrested. My father angrily told the embassy, and it didn't take long for the embassy to confirm the news. In the end, the father left the country with the woman, and the man’s body returned to the United States only seven months later. The autopsy was lost and the lawsuit brought by the father was cancelled.
This film is a Hollywood movie, so it is much more enjoyable than other Palme d’Or films. Therefore, it is not painful to watch the film, and I always follow the footsteps of the director to find the truth. Of course, the film is not particularly good-looking. According to the plot in the photo, you can basically guess that everything is done by the US government. Therefore, the suspense of this film is not about the "ups and downs of the plot", it is just a good-looking conspiracy theory film. As for the theme of the movie, the gloom of the US government is expressed through the relationship between women and men, and the relationship between father and man. To put it bluntly, it is just to criticize what the US government has done and complain about the men who die in the film. In short, the director of this film uses a good-looking movie to show the United States' view of "human rights"-people can't be killed casually!
However, this movie also tells the audience-the disaster comes from the mouth, if men don't ask around and ask everybody, it won't cause a murder. This is true in the real world. What is more important than your own life? Unless you have lofty ideals, you are willing to sacrifice yourself. The male protagonist in the film is obviously not, he is an eventful and talkative frustrated writer, and the unfortunate one. He has confirmed the Chinese saying "don't look down on one's eyes", because he knows why he was arrested, but he certainly didn't think he would be killed! Therefore, through this film, you can understand a simple principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, don't move any evil", don't show inexplicable curiosity, this is the basic principle of life!
The filming is generally quite satisfactory, but one thing is unique, that is, the recollection of what happened. For example, when a man was arrested from his home, the scenes described by several neighbors showed the scenes they described separately. This is interesting and intuitive because it allows the audience to clearly know what the eyewitness thinks. In addition, the film has no characteristics, especially the grasp of suspense does not show the own characteristics of the director. Isn't the director Costa-Gavras good at shooting thrillers? I didn't feel any "horror" at all.
Finally, the props, scenery, costumes, including the hairstyles of the actors, all have typical characteristics of the 70s and 80s, and they seem to have a nostalgic feeling. However, looking at the dress 30 years ago, I find that the popular things at that time look too earthy now, especially women's hairstyles. The curled hair is big and round, which is very funny.
The actors in this film are quite satisfactory. The actor Jack Lemmon is a well-known comedian. He starred in "As Passionate as Fire" and "The Apartment" are my favorites. This time he played a serious role in this film, but he was a little uncomfortable. As far as acting is concerned, his performance in this film is just for his due diligence, which is much inferior to his acting in comedies. In addition, Jack Lemmon is so old that he is almost unrecognizable. His son is played by John Shea. He is very handsome. He has appeared in many American dramas in the 1980s and 1990s, which left a deep impression on me. It's just a pity that there is no information about him in Chinese on the Internet. The two heroines are not familiar actresses, probably they are both active in the 70s and 80s, Sissy Spacek looks rather strange, Melanie Mayron is still a beautiful woman.
in conclusion. This is a relatively general political conspiracy theory film, which is quite satisfactory in all aspects, but at least it is still a watchable film, much better than other Palme d’Or award-winning films.
