The film is about the Angela family facing the pressure of life with different attitudes to the end. Angela, played by her mother Emily Watson, initially married her husband and was not blessed by relatives and friends. And now they have several children. Although life is not as good as they want, coupled with the pain of losing a child who has just passed away, this has not defeated their courage in life. They decided to move back to their hometown of Ireland, hoping to live a little richer there. However, things backfired, and they still suffered from the cold eyes of those around them. Every time when her husband loses confidence in life and no longer has the courage to shoulder the burden of family responsibility, Angela will always bear this arduous responsibility without hesitation. But destiny gave Angela a relentless blow again and again, and her twin children died one after another. At this time, her husband decided to go to Britain to earn a living, but ultimately did not improve the poor family situation. And Angela has been asking for help for her child, Frank, played by Joe Breen, and taught her the desire and dignity of survival. Frank dropped out of school and started earning money. When he made his first money, he was very excited. He feels happy that he can contribute to the family and understands his father's alcoholism. What is worth learning in this film is Angela's indomitable life and desire for survival. It reflects the impact of the world economic crisis of capitalism in the United States on the world in the 1930s. The economy is in recession and the unemployment rate is rising rapidly. The film also criticized the darkness of the capitalist world. However, poverty cannot hinder your progress, struggle is the eternal rhythm of life. I personally think that the end of the film is somewhat insufficient, and the protagonist embarks on a steamer towards the hope and success of the United States of America is the only failure.
