Same, different

Seeing this Thomas Moore's determination, I couldn't help but think of another Chinese figure, Fang Xiaoru, who also lost his head for the emperor's family affairs. This is the similarity between the two.

What's the difference?

Thomas Moore is loyal to his faith, Catholicism; and Fang Xiaoru is only loyal to his former master, Zhu Di’s nephew, or it can be said to be loyal to his beliefs, the Confucian loyalty and forgiveness.

Thomas Moore arranged for his family to go abroad in exile to avoid possible disasters, while Fang Xiaoru watched his family and relatives being massacred.

Moore was tried in public. Although it was an unfair trial, it also went through legal procedures and the verdict of the jury; while Fang Xiaoru died under the personal instructions of Zhu Di.

The biggest difference comes from the king they face. Zhu Di has impeccable power and authority, while the dignified king of England is so difficult even to change his wife. Executing a minister is also through such a complicated procedure and waiting for so long.
