Briefly on Central Australia

This semester I took an elective course of the school called "Explore Central Australia", and followed this class to the central Australian city of Alice Spring for a week to visit the surrounding Turkish community and some natural landscapes. The movie was studied for half a semester, and I watched it before going on a trip. This comment is divided into two paragraphs. The first half of the paragraph is written before the trip, mainly from the teacher's teaching to talk about the part related to the film. The second half was written after I came back, and talked about what I saw and heard in the middle.

Before traveling:

Although he did not carefully sort out what he has learned, I feel that the director is still talking about his own idea in this film. If you switch to Grand Canyon and Native Americans, the director probably will do the same. . It's just that the white girl's Australian accent is replaced by a native American western accent.

White girls who are Australians cannot be unaware of the existence of natives in the central region. Their history is much longer than that of European culture in Australia. It's even more unlikely that she didn't know that they spoke different languages, and the clips in the film that repeatedly asked where there was water would be untenable.
Before the 1970s (this film was from the 1970s, but the story may be from the 50s to 1960s), indigenous people were oppressed and exploited by whites, not to mention equality, they were treated as animals at the time ( And equality has not been achieved so far, although it has improved). They were passively donated materials and houses, and in exchange they needed to learn English and join the church. While the older generation had their own beliefs (and stayed behind their own land because of their beliefs), the new generation was changed because of this way of education. Some people may think that there is nothing wrong with this, that is, let them have supplies and receive education. Don't be deceived. All grants (especially grants in capitalist countries) require returns. What the White people hope in their hearts is that one day all the aboriginals (Australians) will cease to exist (legally eliminated) and Australia will become their world.

Do I say that is extreme? Actually it is not. Regarding the term “the stolen generation” in Australia, it means that during the century from around 1860 to 1960, the government adopted a series of measures to'whiten' the indigenous Australians. The measures are: 1. Indigenous children are unconditionally taken away by the government, adopted by white families, and educated in the white way. 2. Advocate the union of white women and indigenous Australians in order to make their children "bleach".
They also have a set of photos to promote the concept of how children go from black to brown to yellow to white. They believe that the disappearance of indigenous people is inevitable. In such a place where whites and natives live together, natives will gradually be'whitened'-natives are lowly and ignorant. So they want to speed up this process (in fact, here I really want to say-turning white can't become completely white. According to this concept, the world will belong to the yellow race after 1000 years.) In addition, they do not recognize the land rights of the indigenous people, at 70 It was only about 20 years ago that if the land 1. was not requisitioned by the government, the company 2. Evidence proves that the indigenous people have always lived on that piece of land before they can apply for land rights. But because this clause was too vague and it was difficult to prove it, it was still difficult for indigenous people to obtain their own land at that time. At that time, the indigenous people also had activities in the white area-not as primitive as in the film. It's more like a scene at a market that was photographed at that time, making some handicrafts and selling them to tourists (of course, the tourism industry was not as developed as it is today). But it is not so uncivilized by hunting.

In short, the natives were treated cruelly by the whites. It is impossible for a white girl to establish a friendly friendship with the indigenous people so unconsciously under actual conditions. If you say good things to the natives and hope to get his help, it's acceptable to shoot. Indigenous people are not always malicious. Some documentaries made me feel that Aboriginal Australians are still relatively friendly and reasonable. Although their beliefs conflict with the main groups here.

In addition, Dad suddenly shot that or something, which is a bit too inexplicable.

In addition, this Sunday is going to central Australia with school classmates. Quite looking forward to it. Although I think I will be killed by insects, especially after watching this film. Most of the trips in a week are camping. I hope I can come back alive and tell you about what I have seen ...

After I come back: I have been back

from the middle for half a year, and I have read this article again, and most of my views have not changed. Also add some thoughts after returning from the central part.

There are scenes of indigenous people hunting lizards in the film. This should be very common in the local area at that time, and it is estimated that it still exists now. When I went there, I saw a lizard. It’s not that big (or scare me to death). It is said that it tastes like chicken~~-Why

did the indigenous boy commit suicide in the end?
I can only attribute this to a matter of customs. Aboriginal Australians now have a serious problem of youth suicide. Especially boys. Most of the reasons for suicide are relationship problems. For this reason, educated Aboriginal women have set up some organizations to enlighten them on their psychological problems, but the suicide rate of the natives is still much higher than the Australian average. So it can only be said that the thing that courtship does not accomplish death is In their blood.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that the aboriginal Australians are still living a problematic life. They have a serious tendency to drink alcohol. It is estimated that because their education level is not enough, it is difficult for them to find a job. The government has given them some benefits. If you have money for nothing, don’t do any work. They start drinking when they have nothing to do. In particular, their lives will not be so smooth, it is difficult to have a foothold in the society, it is difficult to have career success, etc. to aggravate alcoholism, so there are often a bunch of indigenous people basking in the sun and drinking. In addition, many people are addicted to petrol sniffing (the first time I know this can be addictive). When the alcohol addiction came and they had no money, they borrowed it from a lot of people in the family. Aboriginal people have a strong view of family. People in a family have been so close to our family before, and their cousins are like brothers and sisters. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to refuse borrowing money. They originally lived a communist primitive life with one bite from me and one bite from you ==. So now, even if a talented native has achieved a certain social status and has certain social conditions, his income will be squeezed out by this big family. Under such circumstances, they have also produced some capitalist seedlings, and some indigenous people have begun to deceive their relatives that they have no money. However, because most of them have no money and want to buy wine, their property management industry is very problematic.

Because of this situation, there are many places in central Australia that have alcohol restrictions, and there are also restrictions on the amount and time of buying alcohol.
