The beautiful Alice is singing, like a skylark, like grass in the empty valley...

"Dear thoughts are in my mind and my soul it soars enchanted, As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day| "(Lark in the Clear Air) has never tire of listening, Kate reinterpreted this timeless old song in her eleventh film "The Long Road Is Near│Iris".

This equally timeless biopic tells the 40-year deep love story between the famous British philosopher and novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband John Bailey. Kate and Judi Dench, one of Britain’s greatest actresses, respectively play the roles of the young and old, who is known as the "British Smartest Woman". The young Alice sings "Chongkong". The part of "Skylark" is arranged at the end of the film. The director hopes that the audience will remember her creative power and love of life. It is also a cappella, but the singing voice is more experienced and heavy than in "Sense and Emotion" five years ago, and the general style that can only be seen in Emma Thompson at the beginning.

Biographical film of the famous British female writer Alice Murdoch. The brilliant mind was trapped by dementia in old age. Dench and Kate, two British superstars, played the roles of old and young respectively. They complement each other and inherit each other. I especially like the cross-editing of the first half. The cruelty of the years is inadvertent. It is revealing, but it is very vivid and very affectionate.

Iris quotes

  • Iris Murdoch: We all worry about going mad, don't we? How would we know? Those of us who live in our minds, anyway. Other people would tell us. Would they John?

  • Iris Murdoch: [pep-talking herself] Keep working, keep talking, keep the words coming.

    John Bayley: Keep at it.

Iris Murdoch: I should feel like a deprived animal if I can't write. I'm like a starved dog.

John Bayley: No, keep at it. I'll keep you at it.

    [turns on the desk lamp]

Iris Murdoch: I feel... as if I'm sailing into darkness.
