I would like to ask you a question. In the movie the grifter, how did John Cassack die? It was because he was holding ice water in his hand, and her mother gave a heavy blow. The glass shards were embedded in the neck and he lost a lot of blood on the spot. Dead? The drink was brought up by her mother. Her mother also said that you can choose two cups at will. The son said casually, meaning that he didn’t worry about your poisoning. In the end, he died in the glass of water that his mother poured. Is her mother premeditated? Did her mother want to come over when she poured water?

Freys is really good at handling complex relationships. Just like the previous Dangerous Liasions, the script is very skillful, a few lines are messy but not chaotic. The photography is stylized and the acting is surprisingly good. But it would have been nice if the subject of mother-child incest had gone a little further, and the other flashbacks were too traditional.

The characters are much better than the story. Bening and Houston represent two different types of "bad women," one frivolous and reckless, the other overwhelmed by all kinds of burdens. Bening's several nudes are too hard, and the body is indeed beautiful, but the wrinkles on her face have hinted at a certain tendency of Cusack to choose women.

The Grifters quotes

  • Myra Langtry: I'm Roy's friend.

Lilly Dillon: Yes. I imagine you're lots of people's friend.

Myra Langtry: [taking a good look at LILLY] Oh, of course, now that I see you in the light, you're plenty old enough to be Roy's mother.

    Lilly Dillon: Aren't we all?

Roy Dillon: Play nice. Don't fight.

  • Bobo Justus: One question. Do you want to stick to that story, or do you want to keep your teeth?

Lilly Dillon: I want to keep my teeth.
