Reflection/darkness

This is not the most emotional movie recently, but it is a movie that is very suitable for writing something. In addition, I recently had a little discussion with my friends about similar issues, so I have the right to organize my thoughts.
The translation of the film title is varied, and the more orthodox ones should be based on textual research from the Bible. After I watched the movie, I felt that the topics all made sense, but they weren't very smooth, but there are two images in common: darkness and reflection.

Reflection/Harmonious Family The

beginning of the chapter, four people form a harmonious family, but we gradually discover that this is an illusion. The laughter at the dinner table can turn into the frustrated cry of the father, the dissatisfaction of the daughter, the couple, and the son in an instant. It can also turn into a brighter laugh in an instant. During the acting period, his father was obviously displeased because he was consciously ridiculed, but in the end he gave him a warm compliment. The reflection in reality is like something reflected on the surface of the water. It is illusory and unstable. It floats above the perilous inner darkness of everyone, and is gradually disintegrated by anxiety from the beginning.

The darkness/inner secrets

pass through the reflection of reality, and we gradually see everyone's heart. Karin and his younger brother were dissatisfied with their father, and Martin was not as enthusiastic as they showed. Karin had a kind of offensiveness to his younger brother that surpassed his siblings, and his younger brother was full of adolescent anxiety. There is a dark abyss hidden in everyone's heart, hiding the terrible "reality" that may destroy everything at any time. From the moment Karin saw his father's diary, the darkness in his heart began to swallow the previous reflection. The cold blood in his father's heart dealt Karin a great blow, and since then several people have been dragged into an inextricable conflict. When the son asked his father how he felt about the play, the father's hypocritical compliment was directly interrupted; Martin's questioning of Karin's father embarrassed him; Karin told her brother that she hated Martin.

The reflection/inner labyrinth,

if nothing more, the story is fairly simple, but it is more than that.
When the inner darkness is revealed, it seems to be clear, and the unknown pressure disappears. However, things are more complicated.
The father told his son-in-law on the boat that he had committed suicide because he hated himself. We can simply regard this as a story of reformation. But Martin didn't believe it, and his father's statement lacked confidence, more like a fantasy of self-saving. From another perspective, even when he was pursuing his career almost coldly, how could he not hate himself in his heart? He hates himself, so he cries and commits suicide, but at the same time he can buy gifts casually. The more anxious he is and the more he hates himself, the more he sinks into his own world. His heart is a labyrinth, whether it is selfish or caring for his children. , Are just reflections.
Karin’s situation is more complicated. Her mental illness makes her unpredictable. She loves and hates several people. When she breaks the mask, she becomes more surly. When she is alone with her brother, her closeness and teasing , Rejection, the violent change made me confused like Minas. I tend to think that those are her true feelings, reflections that exist at the same time.
Martin and Manas are relatively simple, but as the reflection of their hearts is shattered, the father and daughter enter a deeper darkness, and they will also form the other two voices of this darkness.

The dark/dangling mirror

went through the glass in the dark in order to see through the reflection, only to find that the opposite side was just another reflection. So where is the truth? The dangling mirror tells the unknowable horror alone.
Karin is getting in touch with the "other world" more and more, she appeals to the gods, that bright room seems to be the only home, but what awaits her is bitter fear. The spider represents the unknown darkness and broke her last nerve-there is nothing to rely on in her world.
In the solitude with his sister in the broken ship, Manas suddenly felt the strange possibility, as if suddenly found that there was an endless abyss beside him, and he was only stepping on a wooden board. This plank was originally wide enough, but it was impossible to move forward because it stood on top of despair.
The father tried to comfort his daughter, but his language was nothing but a reflection.
Martin is still immersed in the world of arrogance, doing the right thing, and his world is also incomprehensibly dark for a few suffering people.

The

final explanation of Glimmer/Trusted Father is not convincing. It is hard to imagine that his words can drive away the darkness that his son felt. It is said that Bergman himself is not satisfied, so the winter light is waiting to be appreciated. I feel very much about the darkness mentioned above, but I am not a pessimistic person. The only way to walk across the abyss is to believe that I will not fall. Only sincerity and trust regardless of conditions can break. Reflection and dark labyrinth.
This is not glamorous nonsense. Those cases of failure are only because they are nameless. The reason why my father's statement is unconvincing is because he mentioned the past and the future, but he didn't do a single thing in the moment. To a certain extent, trust is a kind of spontaneous short-sightedness. To say that it is short-sighted means to truly believe and do nothing but the immediate thing; to say that it is spontaneous means not to see the abyss, but to use one. Accept it with an open attitude, and don't keep it in the field of vision forever.
However, it is difficult to maintain this state. In fact, if people stand in a circle for a long time, they will draw the boundaries unconsciously, and the outside will gradually become dark, but they can bravely give out when they are in contact with the outside world. Trust, believe that the darkness is understandable after all, and the darkness can reveal a little light.
Maybe this is enough.

Through a Glass Darkly quotes

  • Fredrik: I'm an artist.

    Karin: Artist?

Fredrik: Yes, Princess, a thoroughbred artist: a poet with no poems, a painter with no pictures, a musician with no music. I despise ready... made art, the banal result of vulgar effort. My life is my work and dedicated to my love for you.

  • Karin: Funny, you always say and do the very right thing... and it's always wrong.
