Life is but a dream

I woke up today and found that Shanghai outside the window looked like Shanghai in code 46 I saw last night. Orange dust was floating in the air, and the sky was shrouded in thick gray clouds. The sun was invisible. It was an apocalyptic scene. Of course, the last days are still a little far away from us, all this is just a sign of the coming heavy rain.

Ever since I was young, I like watching science fiction movies, always fascinated by the future and all the unknowns depicted in the movies. Code 46 is a science fiction film. We define it this way because the story in the film takes place in the future and involves the cloning of human DNA and other elements that make up the science fiction film. But it is also a love movie at the same time, because the male and female protagonists in it develop a taboo love that they can't explain clearly by themselves, or an unethical love under a special social system.

The heroine has the same dream every birthday since she can remember. In the dream, she stood at one end of the subway car and eagerly looked for the other end of the subway. The subway has 20 carriages, and every year in her dream she can only walk forward one carriage distance. She believes that she will find her destiny when she reaches the last carriage. So she waited patiently until this day came.

The male protagonist planted a virus on himself, so he could easily guess the thoughts of others, and through this ability he became a detective. He has a stable job and a perfect family, but is this really what he wants? Perhaps what he really wants is an exile, a free journey away from mainstream society.

The heroine and heroine meet and know each other because of an unresolved case, and the heroine bravely faces her own destiny, but can't predict what it will bring to herself and the other party. The plot of the whole story is simple, but the filming is fascinating and not boring at all. The skill of the director and screenwriter is still very good. I think a song sung by the child of the protagonist at the end is the highlight of the film, "Life is but a dream". Life is like a dream. We believe in our minds and memories so much, but we often cannot say the past with certainty. Is everything real or is it just a dream.

I chose to watch this film at the beginning because it starred Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton, and of course, because most of the film is about events that will take place in Shanghai in the future. Shanghai is a city that I have lived in for 3 years and still feel unfamiliar, but watching this film gave me a sense of intimacy like meeting old friends. Nanjing Road, viaduct, Pearl of the Orient, Bund, let alone, Shanghai is such a huge, crowded, complicated city with a bit of post-modern feeling, so it is really suitable for filming this kind of apocalyptic movie.
