"circus"
——Comedy often reveals the core of its tragedy
"Circus" is the first time I have seen Chaplin's work. Although I have heard of the names of "Gold Rush" and "Modern Times" for a long time, I have never been interested in the film form of "silent film". I think they have no voice and no dialogue, how can they tell a complete story? It was not until I watched the movie "Circus" that I realized the greatness of mime and the legend of Charlie Chaplin.
The outline of this movie is actually a very ordinary little story: the tramp accidentally hits and becomes an circus actor and falls in love with the host’s daughter. But the ending was unexpected: the homeless felt that he was unable to form a family with the class owner's daughter, and was unable to provide her with the best of everything. So in the end, he gave the opportunity to pursue the girl to the handsome and golden tightrope walker. Instead of going to the next town with the circus, he watched the carriage leave and walked into the rolling dust to continue wandering.
In the movie, Chaplin did his best to play the tramp who admired the girl. But the end is that he wants to watch his sweetheart get together with others and become a funny little flower girl after the wedding ceremony. He hoped that the girl could have a better life, and he didn't want her to run away with him. But why didn't he long for himself to kiss the girl in the church. So he can only show a smile in front of the girl, encourage her and support her as a friend. Throughout the story, Chaplin made the audience laugh again and again with his superb and artistic acting skills, but at the end of the ring that was not given out, the lonely back made the audience sigh. But this is reality.
Similarly, I think this movie also reveals Chaplin's views on actors. Actors are always playing virtual roles, and the world they live in may be like a maze of mirrors, bizarre and bizarre. They may be the circus performers in the film, doing all they can to attract the audience. On the surface they are happy elves, but in fact they are all lonely souls.
There is no line in the whole movie. However, the actors and actresses have interpreted their lovely stories with their excellent physical expressions, perfectly matched with the melody of the music. "Circus" is not only a place for people and things to perform, but also a microcosm of every little character.
If one day life requires me to make a choice, should I choose a lover or love?
