Let’s talk about the movie "Victory" today.
Title Seungriho / Space Sweepers (2021).
This is a Korean movie produced by Netflix.
This film is also South Korea's first space science fiction film. There are many stars in the film. Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Chen Sun-kyu, and Yoo Hae-jin can all be regarded as actors that are very familiar or relatively familiar to the audience. The investment in the film is as high as 24 billion won, which is about 140 million yuan, just like building the pinnacle of Korean science fiction movies.
Compared with such a huge production lineup, the plot of this film is very simple.
The environment will deteriorate in 2092, and the world will no longer be suitable for human habitation in the future. The big consortium UTS controls space resources. Only a few selected humans are eligible to settle in the main city controlled by the consortium. They are called official citizens, and most of the rest can only live in satellite cities and earth with poor conditions, and are called Informal citizens. It is like a household registration system in the future world.
At the same time, space is full of all kinds of space junk, and informal citizens can only make a living by recycling and cleaning up that space junk. Victory is just such a spacecraft that specializes in cleaning up space junk.
While cleaning up space junk, the crew of the Victory accidentally discovered a dangerous figure wanted by UTS-the little girl Jiang Hualang. Around Jiang Hualang, there is a huge conspiracy involving the entire mankind.
Although multiple races and multiple languages appear in the film, this film is a 100% Korean film.
It can be clearly felt that the film wants to take an international route, trying to prove the strength of Korean science fiction films through "Victory".
The English title of the film "Space Sweepers", the literal translation is "Space Sweepers".
This kind of translation is indeed easy to be overlooked, so it is better to be bold in translating into "Victory". The film itself is very ambitious, but the title is so low-key, I really don't know what the main creative team thinks.
After watching the movie, you can feel 3 bonus items and 5 minus items.
In the end, the overall feeling is that this is a movie with special effects and lackluster content.
The first bonus item: video visual effects.
This is the biggest highlight of the whole film, and it is also the main source of funding. A large number of space dramas seem to be staged "Star Wars" in the eyes of Koreans.
The film also successfully won the visual effect nomination award at the 57th Paeksang Arts Awards (2021) in South Korea.
The second bonus item: actor performance.
Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Chen Sun-kyu, and Liu Hae-jin all performed brilliantly.
Everyone is familiar with Song Zhongji. Back then, "Descendants of the Sun" was a big hit, and the marriage between Song Hye Kyo and Song Hye Kyo also attracted a lot of attention.
Kim Tae-li won the Best New Actor Award at the Asian Film Awards for her "Miss", and she entered people's eyes and performed heroically in this film.
Chen Shangui has appeared in many high-scoring movies and TV series, and everyone will recognize him when he sees his face.
Liu Haizhen only served as a voice actor, and still has a certain degree of recognition.
The third bonus item: the plot setting of the proletariat united to resist.
There is a segment of the proletariat united in the film. It is obvious that without the support of the broad masses, the entire film cannot develop to the end.
Only by following the mass line is the correct path. Coming from among the masses and going among the masses, what capitalists are most afraid of is the unity of the masses, so they will continue to train the workers and divide the masses.
The film’s ability to recognize that the proletariat can unite against tyranny and capitalists is commendable.
The first sub-item: the characterization of science fiction is fragmented.
The opening of the film has a strong cyberpunk taste, as if it gave a feeling of "Blade Runner" and "Ghost in the Shell". To describe the future technological world, taking the cyberpunk route should be the safest choice.
It is a pity that the film is not deep enough in this regard. It is clearly a cyberpunk world, and the spacecraft is set to take the steampunk route. The degree of automation is basically relying on it, which is incredible.
If you want to take the hard science fiction route, the science fiction part of this film is still not rigorous enough. For example, when the space elevator reaches orbit, there is suddenly no gravity in the movie. As long as the elevator moves upward against the gravity of the earth, this situation is impossible.
The second sub-item: the logic of the film.
There are not only fragmentation problems in the film science fiction elements, but also many fragmentation in the characterization. Each of the main characters has a contrasting story background, but they are also superficial, and the changes in the character's temperament are all supplemented by the audience's brains.
Pu Hu originally relied on operating a criminal syndicate for his livelihood, but he didn't touch the "dirty money" before doing so. Could the Virgin complex be contagious in space?
The immortal James Sullivan relies on drawing on the vitality of others to sustain himself. He is only a vague expression in the film, but the looming black line on his body does not have a clear explanation. It is left to the audience to guess.
UTS's criteria for screening citizens are secretive, and the difference between citizens and non-citizens is also unknown. It would be a waste to strengthen James Sullivan’s social Darwinism.
The black fox organization tool person setting is too obvious, whether as an environmental protection organization or a terrorist organization, the sense of existence is very worrying, which also exposes the regret of the plot.
The third sub-item: excessive stitching.
"Victory" can be regarded as a collection of various elements of science fiction films over the years. From the characters to the plot development, it can be reminiscent of various works in the past. We usually write materials and articles. We all know that there are a lot of copies of articles in the world, and see if you can copy or not. Copying two articles is called plagiarism, and copying dozens of articles is a tribute to reference.
Kim Tae-ho was dismissed from the military because he was merciful and unwilling to shoot and kill. This is very similar to Finn in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.
"Park Ho" Park Kyung-soo is full of tattoos, with the setting of a tiger sniffing the rose in his heart, and is very similar to Drax the Destroyer of "Guardians of the Galaxy".
The robot Babos is very close to the tuberculosis robot C-3PO in "Star Wars", and its functions refer to "Mechanical Enemy".
Jiang Hualang has the feeling of "A God-given Girl". On the surface, he looks weak and helpless. In fact, he is a new human being, carrying the hope of rebuilding the entire human world.
UTS men look like robo men, but they look like storm soldiers when they are inaccurate.
The space city built by UTS is like a low-profile version of "Elysium", which can achieve gravity without even spinning.
The fourth sub-item: ending.
The ending of the film can be regarded as a fantasy work.
The hydrogen bomb is set as the ultimate weapon that can destroy everything. Even the new humans hope to be able to kill it easily, and yet another nano robot that is immune to all damage has arrived. In the end, I played one unscathed, which was a joke on the audience.
If the film ends with a tragic ending, the overall effect will be much better.
The fifth sub-item: overall view.
As South Korea's first space science fiction film, the film has a tendency to be the benchmark of "Star Wars". The plot directly skips the storytelling of "Star Wars" and fast forwards to the plot of destruction.
On the surface, this is a Korean movie, but at its core it is all Hollywood movies. Putting the hope of the whole earth and all mankind on a weak girl, she concentrated on personal heroism, playing Hollywood routines.
The great success of our "Wandering Earth" depends not only on special effects, but also on the inner core values, which is a great love for all mankind.
"Victory" is 100 times worse than "Wandering Earth". "Star Wars" is still playing the old savior's stuff. Discussions on the political system and class contradictions in power by the oligarchs are superficial and simplified into private grievances.
There is no big love, only a small love, and naturally you can't make a high-level science fiction movie, no matter how you shoot it, it seems stingy.
With special effects but no content,
There is little love but no big love.
