1. Photography

Every time I press the shutter, I'm actually deciding what to paint. I take out the camera and start capturing the lens, looking for different angles. Facing such a palace-style hotel, I first captured the impression of its pure outline in the dazzling sunlight and the spooky glimmer of light from the tiny windows in the veil separated by countless layers of darkness at dawn. Mysterious impressions, as well as the "classical" landscape trees that were trimmed to almost completely fade away the natural atmosphere in front of the hotel and the lake surface smoothed by the hand of the Virgin. Then I went to the hotel on the way, I knew there must be something I was interested in. The road to the hotel was paved with pebbles, and the blood circulation speeded up when walking on the pebbles, making my senses more sensitive. I began to imagine, if I am an elegant lady, walking on tall sandals with stiletto heels. The hard soles block the communication between my nervous system and the cobblestone road. The slender heels are embedded in the pores of the cobblestone road like weeds are stuck in the saline soil. , Let me have a feeling of vomiting deep in the swamp, will there be a gentleman to help me, let me swallow the vomit that is about to overflow, and get rid of this embarrassing situation gracefully? However, this day’s unreliable dream was sucked away by the carpet on the hotel floor along with the friction between leather shoes and pebbles. The bronze mirror reflected my dismay, and I found me in the landscape paintings on the wall. Relying on the illusory concept of "eternity", the carvings and patterns in the door frame seem to continue my dream...In such an ancient palace-style hotel, my consciousness of reality and the aesthetic impression in my dream merged into Sometimes simple and sometimes complicated geometric figures and oddly spliced color blocks. As an impressionist painter, these are all my life's desires, but when I think that these graphics and color blocks will end in a painting, like a dream shattered in endless silence, I feel sad. I long for something eternal, such as a game, a classical oil painting, a classical sculpture, or... a woman in a palace who promises to her lover? Fortunately, they have all become my photography objects. Perhaps, I don't like "eternity" itself, but I hope to use the camera to invade "eternity" and find pleasure from the invasion.

2. Pencil sketch

The next day, I came here again for my first attempt. Does this scene still inspire my interest? Is the magic I felt yesterday still there today? If it doesn't exist anymore, then I will look for other places. This step is not just a sketch, but also the factors that attracted me to here-I will write down everything I perceive: what attracts me, what pushes me, what I smell, what I hear, and watching reality What is the difference between the hotel’s exterior and the hotel in the landscape painting, whether I can feel full in this luxurious luxury, whether I smell the aroma of the carved wood of the door frame, whether the game of game can attract me, whether the woman Still here. I will try to record the details so that I can reshape the impressions in my mind when I return to the studio. Coming to the hall, there is a stage in the middle of the hall. There is a performance on the stage: the actor is chattering and aggressive, his eyes are invading the actress like a camera, and the actress is a sculpture with a pitiful expression doing passive resistance. After a long time the resistance of the actress was disintegrated, and the actor's request was agreed, and the play was over. I didn’t notice what the actor’s request was, but this stage gave me inspiration: I compared this hall, every passage, and even the hotel itself to a "makeshift theater", where, if I want, everyone They are all materials from a novel with a complicated plot... These puppets are in my hands. In this theater where they act as actors, I can let them move, think and perform at will, and I have become unaware. The wanderer who observes the passing crowd-like a child, staring at the new thing intently, with beast-like ecstasy in his eyes. This ecstasy follows me. When I sit at the table of the game, it burns like acrylic on it. On the drawing paper; before I painted the landscape, it spread around on the drawing paper like watercolor; when I stared at the statue on the balcony, it created a wrinkle on the drawing paper like a plastic film between layers of colors. Pattern; and when the woman appeared on my drawing paper with the blissful impression of fullness and maze-like emptiness brought by this luxurious palace, the ecstasy reached its climax, and I could even feel the dream The shy consciousness of me as a lady and the image of Sydney-shaped breasts, pink nipples, green apple-colored high-heeled sandals and so on. Up to this woman, I finished my pencil sketch.

3. Watercolor sketch

I tried various color combinations, hoping to remember those unforgettable moments of light and shadow after returning to the studio. I can use green and gold to express the highest sense of nobility, and cooler purple to express a quieter atmosphere. When the sun comes out, I use bright, strong, and exciting colors. For that woman, the best color is the consciousness that makes her promise to her lover, because in the female-based impression painting, the female is the object of male observation, satisfying the male’s interests, desires, fantasy and anxiety, just like The "female perfection" mentioned in "Madame Butterfly"-being obsessed with a man, loyal to a man, and sacrificed for a man. The image of a man is not important, because a man is the subject of gaze and only needs to gaze at this action. The excitement of staring gave me an illusion that I had control over her life and death. This illusion grew bigger as the stare lasted, penetrated into every blood vessel and followed my blood to every organ, an illusion. Every organ of the painter seems to have a spongy body, erecting at the same moment. In that moment, everything is shining with the color that has washed out the lead. In this color, I talked with her about landscape paintings and talks. Statues, walking on the cobblestone pavement together, let her participate in my dreams, in my dreams she is the subject, in my paintings she is also the subject, because I have shaped her into an ideal subject image-in the palace The woman in here who promised her lover, she promised that we will meet again in a year's time, just as my watercolor sketch promised me that we will meet again in the studio.

After returning to the studio this year

1. Design

In this step, I designed the horizontal and vertical ratios of the channel and the wall, the relationship between the characters and the background, the simplification of the screen graphics, and the sliding pan mirror. I kept trying in these aspects until I got the most balanced and attractive composition and scheduling. Her memory was brought back to life from the dead, and the image was reproduced. Everything was regenerated on paper, and it looked like real, even more real than real. In terms of the horizontal and vertical ratios of passages and walls, even the Baroque architecture, I have painted classical and extremely structured, with a strong religious style of organ music, all of which are generated in such an atmosphere. It seems that they are all dressed in the cloak of existence, including her memory of "I am her lover", and follow this memory to restore the disappeared halo of the previous experience; in the relationship between the characters and the background, I arrange the characters in the painting at will The clarity of her face: either clear or fuzzy, regardless of the distance of the viewer, but she alone, I move the background in the picture forward, "pressing" the space she occupies in the scene, in this form I forced her memory; in terms of pictures and graphics, I simplified an intricate palace into the most standard rectangles and triangles, giving her a pure virtual image of the world. The world I designed for her is so fragile that whether there is interference or whether the interference comes from inside or outside, it is enough to throw the world into chaos.

2. Chroma

When observing the design of this painting, I found that light is the dominant force, and the hotel is just an element in the dark. Under the guidance of this kind of thinking, I established bright and dark areas. Chroma is a series of changes from white to black seen in black and white photos. In order to highlight the main body of the painting, I blacked out the graphic representing the hotel at the edge of the painting, maintaining the brightness of the center. This will form a focal point, drawing the viewer's sight to the bright color area, and the theme in the bright color area is her ! She distributes the light focused on her to everything in the hotel like spider silk. When I keep approaching her in a gentle way, she shines brightly, illuminating the entire hotel! The people and trees outside the hotel are illuminated with only silhouettes and slender shadows. This hotel seems to be a huge light source in the universe! In this huge light source, I saw the real eternity-the love between us!

3. Color

I want to use color to evoke the impression that you are willing to abandon your husband and leave with me! I want to use color to break through your internal amnesia and your husband's obstruction! And when I take you out of the hotel, there is nothing but ghostly dim light in the darkness of the hotel. As a painter, to love you is to observe you through a veil. This veil regards you as color blocks that are interdependent according to the rules of harmony. These color blocks are more prominent due to mutual harmony. Record the feeling of color. This feeling allows us to experience the colorful impression in the black and white images. In my paintings, you shine with the gloss of brandy and the glittering color of the pigeon's breast!

Last Year at Marienbad quotes

  • [X wanders through the hotel's corridors cataloging items he sees]

X: Empty salons. Corridors. Salons. Doors. Doors. Salons. Empty chairs, deep armchairs, thick carpets. Heavy hangings. Stairs, steps. Steps, one after the other. Glass objects, objects still intact, empty glasses. A glass that falls, three, two, one, zero. Glass partition, letters.

  • X: I must have you alive. Alive, as you have already been every evening, for weeks, for months.

A: I have never stayed so long anywhere.

X: Yes, I know. I don't care. For days and days. Why don't you still want to remember anything?

A: You're raving! I'm tired, leave me alone!
