"Xie Li": Good idea but a little messy style

This is a typical case of failure to promote the awards season. Why? First, I sent a news message saying that I would participate in the awards season, and I showed it to the judges and film critics before voting, but I also stated in the email that the comment ban was lifted on February 25, which was the day before the film was released. It seems that I am saying to the audience: It may be not that good... As long as the day before the release of the ban is released, there will never be a good comment.

This kind of public relations strategy error is actually inappropriate, probably because Apple TV participated in the awards season in the first year. One of the most basic criteria for the movies of the season is not to be afraid of evaluation, but to be confident. For example, Nomadland has entered the film festival since September last year, and word of mouth has long been out. Other films, even those that entered the awards season at the end, such as Little Things, also hold multiple screenings at the last minute, without pressure on comments, and even let actors attend Q&A. This is a relatively normal season movie public relations model. Viewers will know that the film crew is very confident, even if Little Things is a suspense film, but with this confidence, Jared Leto won the Golden Globe and SAG nomination on the eve of the vote.

But "Cherry"'s practice of suppressing evaluation to the last minute had the opposite effect. Most people have a preconceived feeling even before watching: this is not for competition.

Although the performance of the Dutch brother in the film is indeed a breakthrough (the heroine is also very good), most people do not take this film seriously.

The Russell brothers are actually suitable for comedy because they have a playful mentality. Everyone who has seen Marvel movies should know that even if there are tragic moments, comedy elements are full of their movies. The film is not actually a comedy subject, but because it spans the life of the male protagonist and is divided into different stages, the director still adds comedy elements to the first half of the content.

From the beginning, the actor of the Dutch brother is facing the camera like Deadpool, telling his own story directly to the audience, and the tone is ridiculous, and this method is often used in comedy. This is most prominent in the part where he joined the army. Obviously the pictures are real and cruel, but they have been making fun of life in the barracks. And this style of black comedy did not continue, resulting in a very inconsistent style before and after. I personally feel that if each part is made into a series, it might not be so obvious. And the soundtrack they use is very strange, not the kind of sad soundtrack you expect for this subject matter, it always gives people a mocking mentality.

It's right to find a Dutch brother to act, because this kind of drug-themed story, if there is no attractive cast, it is difficult for the public to be interested. But the film is specifically for young people, I hope they can learn from it. So this film is actually similar in purpose to the "Pretty Boy" starring in Sweet Cha. It relies on an attractive young male star to attract young audiences and let them witness that if you accidentally become addicted to drugs, a young life will be like this. Withered.

The Dutch brother played from his school days to middle age, and finally appeared in a beard style. It is definitely a good opportunity for him to hone. There are not only kiss scenes and bed scenes, but this character is also very irritable and has a lot of swear words, which is very different from Spider-Man. But at the same time, he is not a bad person in nature. For example, he was very polite when robbing a bank, and occasionally childish. The Netherlands showed his versatility to the right. For him, this film is to show his potential again, and it is not in vain.

The young rookie Ciara Bravo is also very beautiful, with a temperament similar to Olivia Cooke. She has a particularly delicate and delicate face, but her voice is low when she opens her mouth, her personality is rebellious, and she is a cool girl.

The life of the male protagonist represents the plight of many low-educated white Americans who are constantly finding excuses to escape reality. With low academic qualifications and unable to find a job, I used to be a soldier as an escape. I didn't expect to be traumatized. After I was discharged from the army, I still couldn't work normally (and didn't want to work). In the end, it was discovered that robbing the bank was risky. The friend was killed, and the wife was also addicted to drugs. He couldn't live anymore, so he simply surrendered and went to prison to continue to escape. . . He really dismantled the east wall to make up the west wall, and never realized what was wrong with him. The story is worth telling. It just feels that the director has not decided how to tell the story. He doesn't want to follow the traditional path of tragic feelings. He hopes to make a cool crime movie, but the character itself is rather stupid and can't be cool. . .

I still hope that the Russell brothers can make more comedies in the future. They are really more suitable for comedies. Joe Russell couldn't resist making a cameo again. The younger brother of the Netherlands also appeared on the scene.

In addition, the hero is not named Cherry, but Peter Walker. The phrase "Pop the cherry" is mentioned in the film to describe the first attempt. In the interview, the director interpreted the title to mean that every time the male protagonist tried something for the first time, it was fresh and easy, but he didn't realize that the consequences would be serious. I also hope that young people will not just try to try new things and ignore the consequences.
