Ross Glass, Saint Maude, 2019

(3.5/5)

First of all, I feel that A24 is another bold attempt to change the previous type this time.

British screenwriter and director Ross Glass, as his first debut novel, can be said to have set a very high threshold: this is a work that solves many problems related to beliefs, psychological trauma, and mental illness. It seems that the director used an abstract and preaching way of expression, but it is still very triggering. The icy editing relentlessly drags the audience forward, from one disturbing picture to the next. Personally, I feel that this work is not the same as the horror effect brought by the previous thrillers. It is more about the effect of the body’s horror through intermittent and subtle changes to produce a more creepy feeling, such as Maude in the face When facing pain, ecstasy, or some combination of the two, the open mouth is a bit larger than any human mouth, especially at the end of the film, when the orgasm between the two women came, they were scared, and That Jump Scare is too fast

In the second half of the film, when Maude fell into the whirlpool of female loneliness and hallucinations (there are actually similar precedents in film history, such as Ingmar Bergman, Roman Polanski's films), reality The boundaries between fantasy and fantasy have become more and more blurred, and she has become more and more alienated, connecting the noble and pure vision with the irreparable, depraved world around her.

In the presentation of this film, I feel that the director Glass put emotions above fear and put the picture in the dark (the brightness of the whole film is basically very dark), and the seaside scene is also rendered muddy. When deciding the ending of the film, it showed a sense of tension, and using this tension to make each scene feel that a complete sense of horror may erupt at any time.

Finally, I personally feel that the reputation of this film may be polarized, and my position is neither good nor bad.
