Recommended star: two stars (1: not recommended, two: recommended three: super awesome)
Keywords: Grimm's fairy tales; female awakening; style
Fairy tales are the most traditional narrative. The protagonist is forced to leave the familiar environment, meet good people outside, and also encounter powerful enemies. She has gone through all kinds of difficulties, defeated the enemies, and returned to her hometown of happiness.
1. Background story
In the original book, due to the plague and famine, the two Gretel brothers and sisters were sent to the wilderness and abandoned. They lost their way in the forest and found a house made of candies and biscuits. A kind lady took them in, originally to transform them. They became their own snacks, and finally they defeated the witch with bravery, picked up the treasure, and returned home happily.
In this film, Gretel became an older sister. She and her younger brother were also driven out of the house by their mother due to the famine. They encountered a sharp house in the forest with fragrant food, tempting the younger brother to enter, and the witch also took them in. But in addition to wanting to eat them, the witch also wants to train Gretel.
The context of the two stories is roughly similar, but the direction is actually completely different. One strictly follows the structure of the hero's journey, and the other is on the journey of the devil.
2. Is it awakening or hallucination?
The beginning of the story is an ordinary dark fairy tale. In order to save his daughter, the father takes her to a witch for treatment. The witch heals the little girl, but also puts curses and abilities on the little girl. The doomed family sent her to the forest alone. The little girl tempted other children to be her playmates, so pay attention to other free gifts.
In "The Grimm's Fairy Tales", the vicious stepmother wants to drive away the siblings. They didn't return home until the stepmother died of illness (how sick?). The story of a child killing a witch is sweaty. The story of abandoning daughters is even darker. Who can say that those children are not abandoned?
This is the story that Grete remembers, and in the film she feels that she is also a little girl abandoned in the forest, so her appearance, ending and most of the scenes are in the forest. The relationship between mother and daughter is very bad. She has no attribution from the inside to the outside. She wants to find her own story and her own way, so she must be awakened.
She matures very early and understands everything about adults very early. She has a unique ability to see the hidden side of things, and people will fear or even hate her. But the younger brother is different. The younger brother is similar to her child to some extent, and she feels that she will not abandon him.
3. Conditions for becoming a witch
The story at the beginning is false from the picture. The people in the village are not happy with the little pink hats, at least not from their expressions. Maybe even the little pink hat is not capable, but a famine mother wants to abandon her daughter, wants to gain abilities, the self-reported explanation.
A few words of the witch are worthy of fun. People fear good women and believe that all women should be simple little girls and all should be trapped in the chains of marriage, so her own way is to abandon fetters and gain strength.
Gretel was also attracted by her abilities. She hoped that she could protect herself and her younger brother. There is always a price to pay for things that can be obtained. She did not accept the choice of her birth mother and was abandoned by her mother. She chose the teachings of the witch, and actually regarded her as the mother of the soul.
At the beginning of the film, a hunter showed her the way, but she didn't follow it. There was a dream in the middle to remind her that she did not listen. She subtly believed in the values of the witch and asked her brother to leave him. Judging from the previous plot, her brother could not support herself at all, so I think that Grete indirectly contributed to it in the end. After the death of her younger brother, she became a witch without the bondage of mother and child.
The simple text, in the adaptation of the creator, gives a complex definition, everything is very obscure, and the motif of mother and daughter is very unique. If you are familiar with the text of "Hansel and Gretel", you will find that the whole film avoids the heroic journey mode and tells a story of becoming a demon, even if the text is not clear, the deliberate beauty and sound effects of the film give People have a nightmare illusion and like horror movies with unique styles. You must watch them.
