This is not the first time James McAvoy has surprised me. I fanned him from the X-Men series and made up a dozen of his films, but "Filth" made me feel impressed for the first time. At that time, I guessed that this former "female heroine crusher" was in The road of "split acting" may not stop for a while. really.
Anyway, back to this movie, two story lines are interspersed, one is the hero's self-struggle, the other is the heroine's tragic childhood.
The male protagonist’s personality is 23 + 1 heavy personality, in fact, only 6 are more complete. But the setting of other personalities is not a pure gimmick. I think the director even repeatedly emphasized it, making people always have a sense of insecurity about the character and the story, and it is also for the grand appearance of the final personality. A fairly solid foreshadowing.
Meet the six male protagonists:
1. Dennis and Candy Plate
Dennis is the first and the most in appearance, shirt, glasses, handkerchief, calmness, decisiveness, obsessive-compulsive disorder... When he robbed people, he fully showed a gentle scum. It turns out that this handsome guy who likes to watch naked girls dance has a real personality. Very problematic. After that, he disguised himself as an extroverted and cheerful leadership personality-designer Barry went to the female physician's house, but couldn't help but put the chair, candy plate and other things "just casually", which can be said to be a pretty good detail.
But what really shocked me was the scene where he "face-to-face" with the female doctor and finally admitted his identity. When the female doctor's heart-stirring rhetoric began to impress him, he almost made him take off guard. He concealed his eyes by constantly rolling his eyelashes. There was a fleeting light in the water, and he immediately changed his eyes and sitting posture to enter Dennis's identity, which was truly incredible.
2. Mrs. Patricia's necklace
Although she was mentally prepared for multiple personality settings before watching the film, when Mrs. Patricia argued with Dennis and stepped on high heels to push the door in, the unconcealed panic of the three girls still made their backs chill. Not to mention everything about the lens, McAvoy stood at the door with a round inch and elegant posture. The burgundy high-neck knit wrapped his muscles, and even carefully matched a necklace, and began to comfort a few girls softly and gently. Let people take a breath. The slightly frowned brows, the small movements of the corners of the mouth, and the feelings of helplessness and rebuke to Dennis during the conversation made people deeply believe that this was really "another person".
In addition, there is a small detail. When Mrs. Patricia appeared for the second time, she not only changed a shawl, but also changed the matching necklace. This really wonderful, elegant mature woman image instantly became three-dimensional.
3. Hedwig's windows
Hedwig, a nine-year-old boy with constant voices and milky movements, this is the fourth personality to appear, but strictly speaking the third, because the first appearance of Barry is actually played by Dennis. This is a character with light in his eyes, innocent but not innocent, loves music, dancing, has his own small world, but is inevitably lonely. So this is also the character that has the most exchanges with the heroine Casey-because he is still a child with illusions and thinks he really has friends.
He took Casey to his well-decorated room, where there were windows he painted on the wall, hiding his secret desire for the world outside the wall, and he even carefully asked whether his new friends liked this little world. Unlike other personalities, he is full of joy and anger, frowning when he is deceived, and his lips trembling unconsciously. The mantra "etc" he learned from an adult will also change his tone due to excitement. Compared with angering others, he is more like despair of his own weakness and credibility, which makes him finally willing to obey the tough and cruel Dennis, expecting him and the so-called Beast to save "everyone" and no longer suffer. People bullied. This reminds me, when we learn to put away our smiles and tears, do we also ask for help from another voice in our hearts? It instructs us to close the windows tightly, the reward is a fragile sense of security, and the price is a smile that will be dusty.
4. Barry's distress letter
Barry’s image is mainly shaped by the expressions of female doctors, a creative and responsible person, a man of a man, he should be the first personality to decide to receive treatment, and the effect was gratifying at one time. Work stably in one place for ten years. He is the representative of the opposition of Beast, or the antagonist of the dark side of the male protagonist's heart. When Dennis and Patricia and his party took the lead, he still tried to ask the female doctor for help via email, but unfortunately he could not be saved in the end.
Five, Kevin Wendell Crumb
The true identity of the male protagonist. His mother's physical and psychological abuse cast a deep shadow on his childhood, causing him to be weak, lonely, and frustrated, and gave birth to Dennis, an obsessive-compulsive personality to protect himself. I even think that Patricia’s personality is a mixture of his gentle mother and the shadow of a surly menopausal woman in fact. Knife, and made a new one on the spot, the scene was really sudden...).
But I don’t know if it was fortunate or unfortunate. His miserable experience never washed away his kindness, which caused him to fall into a deep sleep suppressed by other personalities in September 2014. The first thing he did when he was awakened was to ask what he had done. Even willing to sacrifice oneself to prevent the brutal outburst in the body. Speaking of it, the spell that awakens the initial personality turned out to be his full name. I don't know if you have this experience. When I was young, hearing my mother call my full name meant that a storm was coming. It was quite profound.
6. Beast born in the subway
This is the +1. The 24th personality developed in the subway station is a combination of multiple beasts. It seems that there is a personality that overlaps with the zoo where they hide, at least it is also keen to watch the animal world. As for why it was born in the subway station, there seems to be something special, but I didn't quite understand it. In short, this man has a cruel temperament, infinite strength, and invulnerability. He can climb walls with his bare hands and tear iron fences with his hands, which is quite illusory. When the girls were first tied up, Dennis said that they were just "food". I thought it was some spiritual food, but it turned out to be food in the literal sense. It was Beast's human flesh sashimi...
After the evolution, Beast is no longer controlled by the curse of Kevin’s full name. It can be seen that he is no longer confused and struggling. He was created to protect Kevin like the other 22 personalities, but his method is to completely abandon this chaotic and complicated nature. The soul, locks all weakness and kindness forever, uses fangs and claws to talk to the world. When he saw the scars on the hostess's body and decided to let her go, he could hear that he treated suffering as a kind of purification, and disliked the other two spoiled girls. The rule of natural selection was quite simple and rude. , Probably the sentence "Who can't kill me will make me stronger".
The first concentrated appearance of other personalities was in a video viewed by Casey during his self-help. Different clothing styles, different speech speeds, and different expressions even contained a diabetic patient who doubted his life. But when Kevin woke up and tried to get Casey to kill himself, the rest of his personality sprang out with a strong desire to survive, without the help of persuasive Tao, the switching of personality was almost entirely based on the faint veins in his eyes and forehead. Barry's "Baby girl"; when Hedwig appeared, the veins receded and his neck no longer flushed. He was still the pissed child, babbling to his former "friend" to announce his upcoming strength; the first thing when Patricia appeared. The thing was that the shawl was closed to cover his half-naked upper body...In short, this scene can be said to be a luxurious lunch. Not to mention that every time Beast appeared on stage, his red eyes were bloodshot, and every piece of tight chicken and every raised vein on his body was acting.
The heroine's secondary line is very simple in comparison. He was ignorant of being sexually assaulted by his uncle in the field. He tried to shoot this greasy middle-aged man, but he couldn’t beat himself in the end. His father passed away early (it’s hard to tell whether he had a heart attack or was done by man). As a result, the guardian became this man. Uncle, is there anything more desperate for a little girl than this. It’s worth admiring that this character is not portrayed as a salvation hero with the protagonist's aura (in fact, no one has been saved except herself...), although she has shown agility, calmness and courage beyond her age from time to time, but Her fear and despair are as real and believable as the other two girls. She has seen the kindness that has not disappeared after experiencing it, but it is also very natural.
Director M. Night Shyamalan is said to be a director who is very good at horror themes and ending reversal. I really don’t know, because I don’t really like to watch horrors. There are not many bloody, violent, and horrible scenes in this movie. The real horror stems from the unknown. The three girls tried to escape time and time again but failed repeatedly in despair. The female doctor's self-blame and fear intertwined but irreparably cry. There is even the tragedy of child molestation in the secondary line that allows onlookers to just let it happen. This is the horror that penetrates the pores, which can be detected and cannot be escaped.
In addition, I made up the movie "Unbreakable" (the film in 2000, which was also the director, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson), which was hinted in the easter egg, and I was convinced by the ending reversal trick. I also saw the trailer of "Glass" today. I have to say that I am still looking forward to it. After all, this series has been buried since 2000. It was only in 2019 that the three leading actors finally converged, which can be regarded as a decade of hard work. NS.
