From "The Fall of a Knight" to See the Controversy between King Power and Clerical Power in Medieval Europe

The protagonist really has his own aura. Such a person who undermines the happiness of other people's families and puts emphasis on friends in the use of the Holy Grail, eventually received tolerance and redemption. It's a pity that the king's essence was good at the beginning, but because of hatred, he was blinded and never returned on the road of blackening. In the end, all the people betrayed their relatives. Many people criticized the plot of the love triangle for being too bloody, and others criticized the drama for failing to strictly conform to historical facts. But TV dramas are TV dramas after all, which require certain commercial effects and artistic treatment. If there is no deviation in the historical background setting of the whole drama, you might as well watch it first!

I personally think that the biggest highlight of this play is the good representation of the struggle between religious power and secular kingship in medieval Europe. For example, in the first season, the Pope secretly sent people to grab the Holy Grail, trying to use religion to integrate the entire Europe into a unified empire; in the second season, the Pope was assassinated by his counselors, and the French King took the opportunity to intervene in the selection of the Pope, and at the same time attacked the Templars. The regiment carried out clearance operations to obtain its land and wealth.

When I saw these scenes, I felt that the "Three Wus and One Sect of the Buddha" in Chinese history (Taiwu Emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty, Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Emperor Wu of the Tang Dynasty, and Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty) are really similar to each other!

One of the main reasons for the four extermination movements in Chinese history was to obtain a large amount of land, wealth, and population controlled by the monasteries, and to consolidate the rule of the feudal regime. Because of its special status, the monastery has always had relief and preferential treatment for corvee in all dynasties and dynasties. In times of social turmoil, many householders who belonged to the country would even carry their property into the empty gate in order to escape heavy servitude and attach themselves to the monastery. Therefore, when the feudal regime’s finances are tight, the reality will prompt the government to start the idea of a monastery. After all, the vast majority of ordinary people have already undertaken heavy corvee and can no longer continue to squeeze. Since then, demolishing monasteries, returning monks and nuns to secular lives, melting Buddha statues, and confiscating monastery land have been put on the agenda of the feudal government. It is undeniable that although the vigorous extermination movement had a certain impact on the Buddhist culture at that time, it also expanded the economic sources of the feudal regime, enriched the national power, and objectively reduced the burden on the people.

The history is amazingly similar! In order to supplement financial resources and strengthen centralization, the feudal monarchs of the West and the East, when necessary, really attacked religions. However, the difference is that Buddhism in China at that time did not establish a religious armed force like the Christian Knight Order. Although Buddhism was popular in some dynasties in China, it has not been able to obtain the status of the state religion. At the same time, the French king did not directly rob the church, but used the weapon to protect the right of the church-the Knights Templar. After all, Christianity has been the state religion of major European countries since it was designated by the Roman Empire in 392, and the kings of all countries have been believers. Therefore, the King of Law would naturally not risk the world, not to mention that Christianity also played a certain role in paralyzing the lower classes and maintaining the rule of the feudal aristocracy. Therefore, the feudal monarchs represented by His Holiness have more complicated feelings about Christianity. In the end, they can only adopt a certain suppression and at the same time use it for me.

Recall the French king's palace in the play. It is really small and shabby, and the French king still owes a large debt, which is incomparable to the wealthy and mighty Chinese king! It can be said that the reason why China's feudal monarchs are more prestigious than contemporary European monarchs is that China's centralized monarchy is far more authoritarian than Europe. In that era, a higher degree of centralized feudal monarchy meant that the emperor could control more power and resources, thereby strengthening the control of the entire empire, and possibly expanding the size and borders of the empire.

For France at that time to be strong, it also had to strengthen centralization and monarchy. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to suppress religious forces to a certain extent and take away part of the land and wealth that religious forces hold. It has to be said that De Nogaret, the adviser next to the French King, is indeed very visionary. He has realized this before the French King, and he has explicitly helped the French King suppress the religious power and made plans to suppress the knights. This guy is like Machiavelli passing through and possessing him!

Therefore, in my opinion, the biggest theme of this drama is the battle between the kingship that is bent on strengthening centralization and monarchy and the sectarianship that is bent on expanding influence and intervening in secular affairs. The bloody love triangle can only be regarded as the fuse. The male protagonist's betrayal of the French king only accelerated the French king's step to strengthen the centralization and monarchy. The betrayal or not can not change the general trend of the royal power trying to suppress the teaching power. To some extent, the fall of the knight may be a certain inevitability of historical development! It is a pity that many knights in the play are actually very brave and kind, but the final destiny is only to serve as the victim of the power struggle between the two sides!

In addition, the play largely restores the customs of medieval Europe. The crowded streets of Paris in the Middle Ages, the open countryside, the chapel with ornate domes in the palace, the solid small castles of the knights, and the shape of the soldiers. The long sword of the cross and the colored shield, everything feels antique, and the visual effect is quite good.

At the end of the first season, a knight took out a note from the bottom of the shattered Holy Grail, but there was no plot related to this in the second season. So is it laying the groundwork for the third season? ? However, the Knights Templar as a whole has already GG in the second season, and there are only a few fish that slipped through the net. How will it fall next? I am more curious about how the screenwriter and director will arrange the plot of the third season!
