"Outlaws", Godard's casual work has a huge impact on the directors of future generations. For example, if you see Arthur, Uldir, and Franz dancing in a bar, you will understand what the famous dance in Quentin’s "Pulp Fiction" is about; see the line when Arthur died: "He Seeing the strange bird in Indian mythology, it was born without feet and can never fall to the ground..." You will understand what Wong Kar-wai's "The True Story of A Fei" is all about. Of course, there are clips like "The Dreamer" that pay tribute to it.
A few impressions:
1. If the term postmodern is allowed, the postmodernity of "Outlaw" is far above that of "Do whatever you want", the latter only makes postmodern micro-control from the deconstruction of the film, and "Unlawful" The entire narrative and tone of "The Outlaw" is postmodern, no wonder Quentin named his film company "Outlaw". At the beginning of the film, a set of fast-editing montages were used to show the rhythm of the whole film, which is the absurd "jianghu" of three young people. Godard lightly applied the elements of the gang movie to the boring and slightly exciting lives of these three young people. The robbery was dealt with more like a game, and when the sudden death came, we followed Like Franz, he didn't feel too terrified.
2. The video style of "Outlaw" is close to Godard's predecessor, "Do whatever you want," and both feature Paris scenes and large street scenes in Paris. In terms of line style, "Outlaw" is closer to "Small Soldier", in "Small Soldier" Rigodard has shown us his talent for writing lines, refined, accurate, slightly poetic but cynical. Since the beginning of the film, Godard has paid more attention to the text than all his contemporary directors. His ability to control lines and his talent made me feel closer to the Left Bank at the time.
3. According to Godard's own statement, "Outlaw" is a work of irony. The parody of American gangster films and irony of American culture can be seen everywhere in the film. At the end, Godard even spoofed: "I The story is over, like a third-rate novel, with a happy and happy ending. Next will be the sequel to "Outlaws", a color wide-screen movie, and the South American Horror of Uldir and Franz."
4. Some details of "Outlaws" make me think it is a genius. For example, when Uldir was talking about the word "plan" in a dialogue with Arthur, he suddenly turned to the camera and said: "What is the plan?"; There was a full minute of silence, Godard really eliminated the soundtrack, leaving us with the same awkward silence.
5. To be sure, "Outlaw" is Godard's most relaxing film. In terms of aesthetics, he is closer to Calvino's lightness and swiftness.

"Did the whole world become a dream, or did the dream become the world?" This line sums up almost all the movies that reflect the French in the 1960s. The most shocking is the scene where Arthur and his uncle shot each other. Naked break with the previous generation. The end laughs to death, pushing the whole film's banter of movies and American gangster films to a climax. In addition, I finally saw the source of many film history/literary allusions (Quentin, Ximeng, Footless Bird, Feeding the Tiger...)

I revisited it again, and I forgot to watch it and give it five stars. Thanks to the CC-like rich tidbits, I have a better understanding of the allusions that bring dialogue and voiceovers.

Band of Outsiders quotes

  • Franz: Isn't it strange how people never form a whole?

    Odile: In what way?

Franz: They never come together. They remain separate. Each goes his own way, distrustful and tragic. Even when they're together, in big buildings, or in the street. Don't feel like talking?

    Odile: No.

  • Odile: I'm worn out with sorrow and fatigue.
