I made the same mistake as everyone else. When I first heard about the director Liu Bieqian, I mistaken him for a domestic director. In addition, the Chinese names of his movies are mostly "The Merry Widow", "The Romance of Las Vegas", and "Foreign Country". "Mandarin Duck" and the like make me misunderstand that it is our Chinese director. Both the work and his name have been translated so Chinese. The main reason is that Liu Bieqian’s films were already famous in Shanghai in the 1930s, so the translated names are mostly followed. The habits back then gave this comedy master a very Chinese name.

However, Liu Bieqian was an authentic German. After the Nazis, he went to the United States and became a famous Hollywood director at the time. In addition, his works were in the silent and sound film periods, and they had excellent works. This is also very valuable.

When it comes to Liu Bieqian, one always thinks of his label "Liu Bieqian touched". Although he has watched a lot of movies, he still doesn't understand the true meaning of the word very well. I guess it should be the kind of more gentle, cunning humor, not clichéd. Not boring, witty humor, just as I didn't see the name Liu Bieqian always think of the word sly, think of the guy with a cigar, squinting, and a bad stomach. Maybe this is the feeling of "Liu Bieqian touched".

Liu Bieqian’s movie, my favorite is the film "To Be or Not to Be" (To Be or Not to Be) filmed in 1942. This movie was remade in 1983 and was seen once on CCTV as a child. , But compared with Liu Bieqian's original version, it is still a lot worse.

"You Flee, I Escape" belongs to Liu's later work. The plot becomes more and more interesting, and all kinds of coincidences merge into one movie.

The movie is a story about a group of Polish actors. The war prevented them from acting in the theater, so they moved the theater to life, continued their performance, and successfully deceived the German Nazis and saved the underground organization in Warsaw. They Also successfully escaped.

The shooting time was 1942. At this time, the Allied forces were no longer passively beaten before. In some areas, the battle situation has gradually turned to the Allied side, but the Nazi forces are still extremely powerful. So this movie follows Liu Bieqian’s usual light-hearted comedy style, but also has more inspirational elements. It can also be said that Liu Bieqian still has a good set of catering to the current situation, like the previous filming to flatter the United States. The anti-Soviet movie "Exotic Mandarin Duck" is also very scheming. So in the movie "You Run and I Run" we saw a group of lovely and brave Poles. They may have many shortcomings and contradict each other, but they are brave in the face of foreign invasion. Tact, unyielding, no way, just so inspirational.

Liu Bieqian's humor lies in the character's witty reflection and cunning irony, as well as some interesting coincidences. For example, the comic effect caused by Dura's shave. Most of the characters in the movie are narcissistic and hypocritical. Mrs. Dura’s narratives about the young lieutenant in the dressing room and subsequent conversations with the lieutenant make the image of a hypocritical and narcissistic actress very distinctive. Just like the Duras and his wife always boast to others that they are the greatest actors in Poland, they are overly narcissistic.

In the first part of the film before the war, in addition to vividly portraying the characters' personalities, it also laid a good foundation for the following, such as why these actors have Nazi military uniforms. And the classic little joke about Hitler, and even the two heroic actors repeatedly appeared several times. It is this layer of paving that makes the film intertwined, very close, and the jokes are more flavorful.

A brilliantly ironic comedy of World War II, it can be said that Lubitsch's style and style are vividly interpreted. The interlocking, ups and downs of the play design and the witty dialogue, including those of deconstruction, intertextuality and analysis of classical drama, are equally ingenious. The chameleon actor went deep into the German army to play Nazis, and the younger brother used the drama lines to express his thoughts and puns. "To be or not to be" "Long live myself" hahaha~ Off topic: This film was the last film made by the heroine Carlo Rumbai, who died in a plane when she went to Indiana in 1941 to implement the wartime public debt. Wreck and Gable's third wife.

[The 400th film in 2013 dedicated to Lubitsch] The 1942 Nazi satirical comedy. Very sophisticated and funny. Well-designed and natural jokes are still hilarious 70 years later. Unforgettable. You can see the shadows of many later movies: the jokey head of "Inglourious Basterds"; the "Mission Impossible 4" both sides and so on. It turned out that it was Lubitsch who played the rest. Comparable to The Great Dictator. But still not as great and immortal as it is. Four and a half stars

To Be or Not to Be quotes

  • Joseph Tura: [disguised as Professor Siletsky] I didn't like the way Captain Schultz shifted the responsibility back to you.

Colonel Ehrhardt: Neither did I. You know there's always something wrong with a man who doesn't drink or smoke, doesn't eat meat.

Joseph Tura: You mean our Führer?

Colonel Ehrhardt: Oh, no! No, please, Professor! I hope you don't...

  • Maria Tura: Colonel, whatever you decide. If you want me...

Colonel Ehrhardt: Naturally, I would have to know you a little better. That is my duty and, if I may say, my pleasure.
