Death is terrible, and more terrible is that life is worse than death

In 1927, Hemingway published a collection of novels "Men Without Women", which included his most famous short stories "Mountains Like White Elephants" and "The Killer":

"Men Without Women" First Edition

I used to like Hemingway's concise and restrained writing style very much. The more I chew, the more it tastes. If you write romance novels for fashion magazines, you will unconsciously imitate it. I think it's cool to write characters like this.

Later, I read Lu Xun ("Kong Yiji"), Camus, Naipaul... I found that the simplicity of Hemingway and Carver was very unnatural. This simplicity is quite brilliant in some parts, and it is a very important writing technique. It is this kind of restraint that is easy to suppress internal injuries, which will appear pretentious and feel very twisted.

A true iron-blooded man is not introverted and reticent on the surface, but the tragic and decisive "Yi Shui Xiao Xiao Xi wind cold, full of clothes like snow", if life is a tragedy, let the next wound wait for me... …

In 1964, Nabokov laughed at Hemingway's naive intelligence and emotions, but praised "The Killer" as "pleasant and highly artistic."

Former boxer Ollie knew that someone was coming to kill him, but he still lay indifferently on the bed. He was really intriguing: He was covered with desperate feathers, refused to resist and flee, was it because of severe depression, or his heart was ashamed, and the past was unbearable...

Suspense is full of suspense, worthy of Nabokov’s praise, but Hemingway commits the same old problem at the end of the novel:

He waited in the room like this, knowing what he was about to run into. I couldn't bear to imagine it. This is horrible.

Nick decided to leave this city full of despair and death. The reasons have been clearly explained, so why superfluously explain to George who knows the inside story? Too blunt, too contempt for the reader's intelligence.

In spite of such flaws and regrets, "The Killer" is still gripping, and its portrayal of the killer is incomplete. The seemingly "nonsense" that has nothing to do with killing has greatly affected the "Pulp Fiction" (1994) which is recorded in film history:

"Pulp Fiction": Black and White Shuangsha talks about Holland, marijuana, burgers, foot massage along the way

Two movies based on "The Murderer" are also notable:

"Embroidered Scarf Masked Pirate" (1946)

Hemingway personally participated in the scriptwriting. The first 11 minutes of the film are almost identical to the original work. Then the cold and mysterious Ava Gardner interprets the femme fatale, and the male protagonist is fascinated:

Beautiful trap

There are many movies based on Hemingway’s novels. The most outstanding is "The Masked Pirate with Embroidered Scarf". Since then, Ava Gardner has been popular in Hollywood and is known as the most beautiful vertebrate on the surface. It is very convincing in the settings that are not hesitating:

Burn one's body to fire

"The Killer" (1956)

Tarkovsky and two classmates of the film school co-directed the short film debut. The killer is just as young as the director:

Killer

Ta Sheng's understanding of the original work is very accurate, and the despair of the characters is endless:

Death is terrible. What's more terrifying is that life is worse than death, completely losing the will to survive...

What happened to him?

Most of the people who fell from the cliff climbed up by themselves——

The performance of "Embroidered Scarf Masked Pirate" is very wonderful. You did not fall into the trap, perhaps because no one has made you unable to extricate yourself:
