Short, punchy, dramatic headlines

Billy: "...have a look, what do you see, tell me the headline"

Quoyle: "Horizon fills with dark clouds..."

Billy (shook head): "Imminent storms threaten village"

Quoyle: "but what if no storm comes?"

Billy: "Village spared from deadly storms"

One of the few nice moments in Shipping News-the movie. Otherwise the film felt extremely rushed, took shortcuts whenever possible, often shamelessly. Some supporting roles were wonderfully casted, like the Gammy Bird gang. But the main characters were light years away from the original book. Kevin Spacey was way too smart a guy for Quoyle and all his acting talent couldn't help. Blame on the lasting impressions from "The Usual Suspect".

If you have read the book, don't watch the movie. If you have not watched the movie, read the book instead.

The details are a bit bad, and there are also problems with the explanation. However, I still like the story. The pattern is gradually expanding. It is about a person's spiritual recovery and redemption, which is also the redemption of a family. A larger point can reflect the redemption of the entire nation.

This is supposed to be a healing movie, but it just tells you that everything can be cured, but there is nothing to remember. The lack of a moving power is not just about telling a few legends, being haunted, and bringing together a few broken families. The male protagonist's line of thought is very weak, unable to carry the whole family story.

The Shipping News quotes

  • Agnis: [looking out at the North Sea] Maybe one day we'll build a summerhouse out here.

    Quoyle: Summer...

Bunny Quoyle: Do they have summer here?

  • [last lines]

Quoyle: [voice-over] There's still so many things I don't know. If a piece of knotted string can unleash the wind, and if a drowned man can awaken, then I believe a broken man can heal. Headline: Deadly storm takes house, leaves excellent view.
