Mirror mask-looking for the lost self

I have to talk about the director of the film, Dave McKean. Dave McKean is a PS master and has been the art director of many films, such as [Harry Potter]. Most of the plot of Dave McKean's [Mirror Mask] takes place in dreams, so the picture is illusory and beautiful. The processing of many parts in the film screen makes me feel a little [Avalon] style. However, [Mirror Mask] has to be dealt with better. In fact, [Mirror Mask] can be viewed as a live-action cartoon, and you can put aside the storyline. It's not because the things I'm talking about are complicated, on the contrary, they are very simple. It's just that many things in the film are fantasy, which may not be accepted by many people at once.

This film is reminiscent of [Alice's Travels], Alice inadvertently broke into a dream-like world. This kind of fantasy movies have become popular in recent years, earning enough people's pockets. [Mirror Mask] Although there are fantasy characters and gorgeous scenery, compared to others, like [The Lord of the Rings], it is a bit more childish and peaceful. Of course the themes they express are very different. The style of [Mirror Mask] may be more like [Invasion of Brain Cells], although the latter is more intense, it also shows extraordinary imagination.

[Mirror Mask] is full of black and white discussions, black and white balance. The protagonist Helena is confused and rebellious about life, Helena vents with the pen in her hand. Black lines, white drawing paper. The weird and slightly decadent style of painting shows Helena's inner contradictions and character struggles. But Helena is apologetic to her mother. Like any adolescent child, she is always not good at expressing her inner feelings. The relationship between Helena and her mother is a tight rope. This kind of relationship was finally broken by a sudden event-her mother was seriously ill, and Helena began to blame herself. She thought it was her quarrel with her that made her sick. She sent a hand-drawn card to her mother, praying for her to recover. Things seemed to end here, but this was the beginning of Helena's dream.

Helena's dream is actually the world of the black and white lines she painted by herself. One day, the balance between the two worlds of light and darkness was broken, and only the "mirror mask" could restore the balance of the previous world. So Helena and another newly-acquainted partner embarked on a journey to find the "mirror mask" to save the world. The process of searching for the "mirror mask" actually alludes to Helena's growing psychological journey. Helena must face her true feelings, her true self, and face her own affairs bravely.

Black and white, balance. The director seems to be guiding the hearts of those young people, balancing their minds, getting out of confusion, and knowing who they really are.

  • Black Queen: You need a pretty frock and a happy smile.

    Helena: A smile?

Black Queen: With a smile on your face everything will seem brighter because from now on we are... what?

    Helena: I don't know.

    Black Queen: Tell her.

Black Queen's Guard: Uh, not at home to Mr. Grumpy, your majesty.

    Black Queen: Exactly.

  • Helena: [during opening credits, playing with sock puppets] Ha! You may think I'm a hardhearted black sock, but underneath this dark woolly exterior is a naked pink foot.
