Birdy is a child who has dreamed of flying since he was a child. He likes birds, he likes to see how they fly, and even imagines that he is their kind. He often sleeps naked in a big cage and dreams of flying in the most natural state. He studied how to use tools to fly, made a pair of big wings for himself, and was enthusiastic about experimenting. Until the outbreak of the Vietnam War, Birdy was conscripted into the army. The death of humans and birds caused severe damage to his spirit and was sent to the hospital. From then on, he stopped talking, curled up and stared at the blue sky every day, imagining that he was a bird, until his friend Al (Nicholas Cage) appeared with their common memories...
In fact, everyone might be like Birdy. Xiao has a dream, flying or something, but most people will not be as obsessed as he is. I can’t comment on Birdy’s choice. He has departed from this society, alienated from family and love, is incomprehensible with the world, and is not understood by others. But on the other hand, he has obtained infinite happiness from the self-enclosed fantasy. What if others don’t understand. ? I only live in my own world...
ideal or life? Everyone has their own choices, as long as they are satisfied with their lives. The person who chooses one does not have to laugh at the person who made the other choice. Everyone has their own fun and each has its own game rules.
The film incidentally condemned the huge damage caused by the war. Countless young people who should have lived a happy life ruined their lives in the war without knowing it, or came back with major trauma, unable to continue their original lives. The most cruel, it destroyed the spiritual home of a generation. Birdy is the same, and Al is the same.
But the shot I felt the most shocking and painful was not the soldiers struggling in the mud with blood and pain, but Birdy’s favorite little canary who wanted to fly back to his master, but smashed the glass with his head. The scene of death. The joy and utter shock of not knowing the danger is right in front of him, but also vaguely feel that Birdy's fate after this is worrying.
Fortunately, the ending was not as desperate as I thought. Birdy escaped from the hospital with the help of Al, and flew off a high platform, thinking that it would follow Al’s heart-piercing cry. Seeing Birdy lying upright on the floor with a smile and dying in a pool of blood, but unexpectedly saw him looking back at his friend's brilliant smile. At this point in the film, we don't know what their future will be like, whether they escaped smoothly or got caught back, Yu Yu still lives happily in her own small world all her life. Maybe even the original author doesn't know what fate will be if he chooses the ideal of transcending reality.
In fact, the film is not as heavy as what it tells. Matthew Moding, who plays Birdy, always shows a bright and simple smile, and the young Cage's energetic young man feels sunny. As Al said in the film, they are the most typical Philadelphia crazy kids. They are just growing up thinking about what they like step by step.
I hope that most of the children will not grow up so hard...
