"Love Story" movie script
Text/Eric Siegel
Translated/Shoucheng, Weiping
The rich son Oliver Barrett is a student at Harvard University, and the young woman Jenny Caveller is a student in the music department of Decliffe College. She also serves as a college librarian in her spare time to supplement her family.
Oliver often went to the library to borrow books and met Jenny. The two fell in love and settled for life. But because Jenny's father was an Italian bread worker, their relationship was strongly opposed by Oliver's father. Regardless of his father's objections, Oliver still deals with Jenny. The father is furious and deprives his son of his right to inherit the property. Oliver ran away angrily and married Jenny. But their lives have encountered difficulties. Jenny gave up her plan to study in Paris and found a formal job to subsidize Oliver with her salary. Oliver is diligent and studious, and won a well-paid position with excellent results. Since then, the lives of the two have begun to improve. But at this moment, Jenny died of sepsis. Oliver was very depressed. He repeated Jenny’s words from time to time: "Love means never regretting."
After the film was released, it soon became one of the top ten best-selling films in Europe and America in 1971, and won the Oscar for "Best Composition" in the same year; "Best Film", "Best Director", "Best Actress", "Best Screenplay" and other awards.
This film embodies the American film's return to the fresh and flourishing period of romanticism and sentimentalism in the 1930s and 1940s, free from swing music.

[One autumn afternoon, about five o'clock in the afternoon. The cold drink stand at the west end of Fifth Street.
[A hawker selling cold drinks reaches into the small freezer, takes out an orange popsicle, and hands it to a nine-year-old customer. There are also a few small customers waiting on the sidelines.
[At this time, with a cool demeanor and well-dressed, twenty-four-year-old young lawyer Oliver Barrett, fourth, just after get off work, walked towards Fifth Street with a briefcase in his hand.
[He came to a doctor's clinic on Fifth Street, and a bronze plaque in front of the door read: "Mottimo F. Xiefudi, Doctor of Medicine." De turned around and went in.
〔In the doctor's office. Dr. Xie Fude is about fifty-five years old, with silver hair and personable demeanor.
Oliver: Whose fault is it, doctor?
[Oliver sits opposite the doctor. Wood walls are used in the clinic, which is both exquisite and unique. The exquisite artwork displayed indoors is more eye-catching than a doctor's license.
Doctor: I don't want to use the word "wrong".
Oliver: Well, just use your words. A twenty-four-year-old couple will have no children. Obviously, one of us must be...dysfunctional. who?
[Silence for a moment.
Doctor: Jenny.
[There is another moment of silence. Oliver was relieved because it was not "his fault." He realized it was time to reply.
Oliver: Okay, then let's adopt one!
Doctor: Oliver, the problem is more serious than this. Jenny is very sick.
Oliver: Why is it "very good"?
[Silence for a moment.
Doctor: It's dying.
[Silence for a moment.
Oliver: It's impossible.
[The doctor's expression replied: This is true.
Doctor: I'm sorry, I have to tell you.
Oliver: I got it wrong. There must be a mistake.
[The doctor approached the desk and explained this fact to Oliver again in a pragmatic manner, with a gentle and polite manner.
Doctor: We tested her blood three times. There will be no problems with the diagnosis.
[Oliver shook his head, believing in anyway. Finally, he forced himself to face this harsh truth. He raised his head and looked at the doctor.
Oliver: When shall we... tell her?
Doctor: You have to decide on this point. Treatment can be slowed down slightly.
[There is another moment of silence.
Oliver: (shaking his head bewildered and sad) She is only twenty-four years old!
[The doctor nodded silently, expressing sympathy. Pause for a while.
Oliver: Will it be painful?
Doctor: I hope not. Of course you have to talk to a blood doctor. I can introduce you to Dr. Edison...
[Oliver made a gesture to indicate not to go now. He couldn't talk about anything at this time.
Oliver: So, so be it.
[Pause for a moment. Oliver took a deep breath, cheering himself up.
Oliver: (to the doctor) What should I do? I mean, what can I do for Jenny?
Doctor: Keep it normal for as long as possible. This is the best way.
Oliver: It's normal... well, it looks like normal!
[He stands up, waves goodbye, and walks out of the room.
3
[In the evening, Oliver walked home with difficulty, ignoring the beautiful, fashionable young men passing by in the street.
〔Oliver's home is located in a beautiful mansion lined up on Third Street. Oliver passed through the glass door and walked to the elevator. The black goalkeeper greeted him.
Gatekeeper: Good evening! Mr. Barrett.
Ollie waved at him in response.
Gatekeeper: Please convey my best wishes to Jenny, Mr. Barrett.
[The gatekeeper salutes, Oliver returns, and walks to the elevator.
[Oliver gets out of the elevator and walks in the quiet carpeted corridor. In front of Room 10-H, the house number read: "O Barrett fourth." He fumbled for the key, then unlocked the door.
[Usually, as soon as the door opens, he will call Jenny in his voice. That is a normal procedure. But today, his throat choked and his voice was weak.
Oliver: James! (Taking a breath, a little louder) Jenny! I'm back.
4
〔The newly painted walls of Oliver's house are white and dazzling, with French poster art hanging on the walls, and modern furniture in novel styles.
[Jenny Barrett pokes her head out of the kitchen. She has a pair of clear and beautiful eyes, and a beautiful smile on her radiant face. That moving smile made the beautiful and smart Jenny more charming and lovely.
Jenny: I want a lawyer.
Oliver: I am a lawyer.
Jenny: (From the heart) All I want is you.
[She rushes into his arms.
Oliver: (gently) I need you too.
Jenny: Why? I am not a lawyer.
Oliver: But you are a naughty guy. I happen to need a naughty guy.
[Jenny puts her head in his arms. It's time for him to say the choreographed love words.
Oliver: You are... so beautiful, Jenny.
Jenny: Oh, nonsense.
Oliver: Well, you are terrible.
Jenny: I'm not scary. I have never felt scary. For Thursday night, I looked okay. Isn't it right?
Oliver: "It's OK" is too poetic.
Jenny: Stop talking about poetry, Oliver. Say what you see.
Oliver: (smiling) I saw you.
Jenny: (repaying it with a smile) This is poetic.
[Stopped.
Jenny: Hey...Xie Fude said that neither of us has any problems. He said that to you too, didn't he?
Oliver: Yes.
Jenny: So we just have to keep trying, right?
Oliver: Yes, (pauses) Let's try it now!
Jenny: You mean now? immediately?
Oliver: More immediately than immediately!
[Oliver and Jenny lie on the bed, feeling emotional. Jenny put her arms around him, as if sleeping instead of sleeping.
Oliver: I love you, Jenny.
Jenny: You really have eyesight.
[The camera moves to Oliver, then stops printing. A conversation that happened a long time ago resounded outside the painting.
Oliver's voice: Do you have the book "The Formation of the Middle Ages"?
Jenny’s voice: Don’t you have your own library?
Oliver's voice: Please answer my question.
Shi Ni's voice: Please answer my question first.

Reminiscence lens
[One early winter afternoon, at the library of the Radcliffe (Note 1) College Library to reserve the bibliography check-out desk. Young Oliver, wearing a novel shirt and high-end cashmere sweater, is dealing with a girl who works at the lending desk. That girl is Jenny who is younger than she is now. She wears a pair of glasses and a slightly bohemian outfit.
Oliver: We have the right to use the Radcliffe Library.
Jenny: I'm not talking about the regulations with you, preparatory student. What I'm talking about with you is reason. Harvard has 50,000 books, and Radcliffe has only a few thousand broken books.
Oliver: I said, I only borrow one. I have a one-hour quiz tomorrow, damn it!
Jenny: Please pay attention! Keep your mouth clean, prep students.
Oliver: Why are you so sure that I have entered preparatory school?
Jenny: You look stupid and rich.
Oliver: (a bit amused) I'm actually smart and poor.
Jenny: (disagreeing) Oh—? I'm smart and poor.
Oliver: Where are you smart?
Jenny: I won't go for coffee with you.
Oliver: I will not invite you either.
Jenny: You are stupid here!
6
[In Cronin's Restaurant in Harvard Square, Jenny and Oliver are sitting at the table with cups in front of them. Jenny stared at Oliver, who was flipping through her notebook, with a triumphant expression in her eyes.
Oliver: (reading the elective code in each notebook) Contemporary Literature 105. good. Music 150. good. Music 201. (To Jenny) This is a graduate school course.
Jenny: (nods arrogantly) Polyphonic music from the Renaissance era. (Note 2)
Oliver: What is polyphonic music?
Jenny: It has nothing to do with sex anyway, preparatory student.
Oliver: Miss Cavin Riley, I solemnly inform you that my name is Oliver.
Jenny: Is it the first name or the last name?
Oliver: First name.
Jenny: What's your last name?
Oliver: (difficultly) Barrett.
Jenny: Same surname as the poet Barrett?
Oliver: Yes, but it doesn't matter.
Jenny: Same surname as Barrett who funded Harvard?
Oliver: Yes.
[He really wanted to add "but it doesn't matter", but he couldn't. This made Jenny suddenly understand who she was dating. She is a very sensitive girl.
Jenny: Hey, I was drinking coffee in the same veritable Harvard building! You turned out to be the Barrett Teaching Building!
Oliver: (stingingly) I am not "Barrett Building". It was just my great-grandfather, who happened to give such a thing to Harvard.
Jenny: So, his not-so-great-grandson can enter this prestigious university!
Oliver: (Enraged) Listen, if you think I'm so useless, why are you teasing me to buy you coffee?
Jenny: (eyes twinkling) I like your body.
7
[In the evening, at Radcliffe College, Oliver is sending Jenny back to the dormitory. He carried Jenny's bulging green schoolbag.
[They are walking side by side on the campus. Oliver is searching for the bad in order to make Jenny improve her evaluation.
Oliver; (pretending to be careless) I am majoring in social sciences.
Jenny: I can't tell.
Oliver: This is a course for top students.
[They arrive at the Burrig Building, go up the steps, and walk towards the door. Oliver looked at Jenny as he walked, hoping to get her compliment.
Jenny: Listen, preparatory student, I know you still have a little brain.
Oliver: (Overjoyed) Really?
Jenny: (Standing at the door) You are pursuing me, aren't you?
(She smiles) Goodbye.
[She walks directly into the door of the dormitory. Oliver was bewildered. Is it just that? What's next?
Oliver: Jenny!
Jenny: (looking at him from behind the door) What are you doing?
Oliver: Listen, you proud Radcliffe chick, there was an ice hockey game with the Javelin Heads on Friday night.
Jenny: What's the matter then?
Oliver: I want you to see it.
Jenny: Why should I go to see that messy ice hockey game?
Oliver: Because I participated in the competition.
[Stopped. Jenny put on a casual look.
Jenny: Which team are you from?
〔The vocal cords are stacked into the picture: the sentiment is boiling. The cheers were loud and loud. The band began to play music.
8
〔night. On the Harvard University ice hockey rink, the Harvard team's game against the "Javelin Head" team is inextricably played. The opposing forward, inspired by the hoarse cheers of supporters, has crossed the blue line of the Harvard team. At this time, Oliver suddenly rushed into the center of Chen Di of the "Javelin Head", struggling to grab the ball. The Harvard team launched an offensive, and Oliver rushed forward bravely. The "marked head" guard came up to block. Oliver lied to the defender and was about to shoot. Unexpectedly, another member of the "Javelin Head" chased up from behind. Both of them hit the fence. The two sides fought for the ball and refused to give each other. The fight is getting fiercer.
[The referee blows the whistle, gestures, and convicts Oliver of a foul. Oliver protested angrily. The referee waved for him to appear.
[Voice of the commentator: Barrett of the Harvard team illegally picked up and sent off.
〔Oliver blushed with a thick neck, panting and crawled into the area where the player was sent off. He shook his head in disgust, cursing unintelligible words, only to hear the clatter of his skates.
[Oliver sits and watches the game intently. Jenny came over and talked to him against the fence.
Jenny: (Politely) Your friends are playing hard, why are you sitting here?
Oliver: (angrily) This is the area for the players who have been sent off the field.
(Turning to the ice rink and shouting) Harvard, come on, stay the ball!
Jenny: What rules did you break?
Oliver: (not looking back) I... worked too hard.
Jenny: How could they punish you to sit here because you "hugged someone"? This is really a wonderful thing.
Oliver: (tanning) Jenny, I have to concentrate!
Jenny: What to deal with?
Oliver: How do you settle accounts with that guy from the "Javelin Head" team.
(Again to his teammates) Come on, Larry! Be careful!
Jenny: Are you an unethical athlete?
〔no answer.
Jenny: Will you settle accounts with me one day?
Oliver: (without looking back) If you don't keep your mouth shut, I will settle accounts with you now!
Jenny: I'm leaving, goodbye.
〔Oliver turned his head and watched her walk, then turned around to watch the game, he involuntarily glanced back in the direction where Jenny was leaving.
[A few minutes later, Oliver plays again. He quickly moved forward with the ball with a cruel look, but as he passed in front of Jenny's seat, he couldn't help but glance up again.
[At this moment, two "Javelin-head" players hit him, intercepted the ball, and threw Oliver on all fours. The audience was in an uproar.
[Oliver falls on his back on the ice. The "Javelin Head" team began a full-scale offensive, breaking through the line of defense recognized by Harvard.
[When Oliver got up and continued to slide forward to pursue, he shook his fist at Jenny who was still there.
[The few but very noisy supporters of "Javelin Head" shouted their cheering chants again: Come on, fight hard! Come on, fight hard!
[A supporter of "Javelin Head" shouted hoarsely, "Kill the little ass from the Buddha team!" Jenny was sitting near them.
Jenny: (to those yelling) How do you hurt people with your mouth?
[The supporters of "Javelin Head" looked at Jenny in amazement. Suddenly, a roar erupted from the stands, and all the audience stood up. The Harvard team hit again. Jenny also stood up, infected by fanatical emotions, and looked very excited.
Jenny: (releases her throat) Go, Oliver, go! Knock him on the head.
〔Oliver and his teammates dribbled the ball beautifully and crossed the line of defense of the Javelin Head team. At this moment, Oliver is not the center of attention. He was quick-sighted, passed the ball neatly and beautifully to the center forward, giving him just a chance to hit the goal. The crowd cheered and thunderous applause. Oliver and the right forward slid to the center. They hug together.
9
[In the vicinity of Burrig Building, Jenny wrapped her head and face in a big scarf, only showing two big piercing eyes. Oliver escorted her back to the dormitory.
Jenny: Hey, in this horrible weather, it can be frozen like a popsicle outside the house.
〔Oliver is relaxed now. He was tired, but very happy. The joy of victory healed all the pain. Almost instinctively, he kissed Jenny on the forehead.
Oliver: Thank you for not leaving.
Jenny: Did I say you can do this?
Oliver: What do you do?
Jenny: I said you can kiss me?
Oliver: (makes a face) I forget about it.
Jenny: I don't have one.
[Oliver stops, turns around, and looks at her. Then affectionately took off the scarf that wrapped her cheek, and kissed her passionately.
10
[Radcliffe campus. Jenny and Oliver held hands and walked towards the front door of Jenny's dormitory building.
Oliver: Listen, James, I may not call you for a few months.
Jenny: (incomprehensibly) Why?
Oliver: Since you are willing, then I will call you as soon as I enter the dormitory door as before.
[After a pause, Jenny realized that Oliver was retaliating with what she had said before.
Jenny: You guy!
Oliver: What? Can't swallow the dishes you made yourself?
[Oliver finished speaking, turned his head and left, leaving Jenny alone in front of the door in a daze. Oliver walked towards the camera with a smug smile on his face. He can be regarded as winning this time.
11
[That night, in the Harvard University dormitory, three Harvard team players sat around and played poker. The biggest and most sloppy is football team defender Ray Stratton. They have lived together since Oliver entered the preparatory school. Ray is wearing a team training jersey. The two card friends Steve and Hank wore dirty crew neck shirts. Oliver pushed the door into the room and took off his coat.
Oliver: Okay, guys!
Ray: (Continues to play cards) Ollie, what are you doing tonight?
Oliver: The last pass was made.
Ray: Was it the one that hit Cavin Riley?
Oliver: Nosy!
Lei: But I am your roommate!
Steve: (to Ray) Who do you say?
Ray: Jenny Cavinelli—somewhere in Rhode Island. Engage in music.
Hank: Oh, I know that girl. Wearing a pair of glasses, right?
Lei: That's her.
Hank: That girl is not easy to deal with.
[Background: Oliver is unwinding the extra-long cord of the telephone.
Lei: (To the two boys) She often plays the piano in the Bach Association.
Steve: What tune are she and Barrett playing?
Hank: I'm afraid... it's hard to get it, right?
〔The boys chuckle secretly. Oliver has pulled the phone to the door of his room.
Oliver: (to Hank) Fool, shut your mouth!
[He walks into the room and closes the door with a bang.
Hank: (To the other two) Am I right?
[They laughed wantonly and agreed.
[Oliver leaned on the head of the bed in the bedroom, dialing the phone number. Outside the door came the sound of drawing cards and an obscene conversation with the players.
Steve: Is he really fascinated?
Lei: No, he is just a little bit lustful. (There is another sneer.)
Steve: Is she really that tricky?
Hank: Isn't she studying at Radcliffe?
[The noise of these guys is even louder.
Oliver: (whispering into the telephone) Jay you.
[Silence for a moment. After hearing her answer, he smiled.
Oliver: Jenny, your mouth is dirtier than my roommates!
More laughter and ridicule came from the outside room. Oliver hung up the phone and lay sadly on the bed. ...I am inexplicably happy.
12
[On the ice hockey arena, players from both the Konar team and the Harvard team are fighting. A member of the Konar team is playing against Oliver. The referee blew his whistle vigorously in an attempt to pull away the two sides in the melee. Oliver violently broke free from the obstacles of others, and once again waved his palm to the Konar player.
[Among the chaotic crowd, there is a man who is nearly sixty years old, well-dressed and extraordinary. Although the people around him were yelling, but he was always watching calmly and with concern.
Referee: (Angrily to Oliver) You, end!
[Oliver is still fighting furiously.
Oliver: Forget it! referee!
Referee: (Yelling to the outside of the screen) No. 7 is sent off!
[Oliver skating out of the ice rink angrily, blood dripping down his right cheek. A large number of "Konar" supporters booed at him.
[The man of great bearing notices the wound on Oliver's face. Although he remained silent, his eyes showed concern for Oliver's injury.
[There is another round of applause outside the screen. The record on the scoreboard changed to "Conar: 5, Harvard Team: 3".
[Oliver is extremely depressed by the Harvard team's defeat. And the man with extraordinary bearing is not interested in the result of the game, he only pays attention to Oliver.
[The supporters of "Konal" are ecstatic.
13
[One hour later, outside the Conar University ice rink, Oliver's hair was combed, the injuries on his face were also bandaged, he was dressed in casual clothes, and a bag with ice hockey equipment was placed on his shoulders. He had just returned from the Cornal Ice Arena when a biting cold wind hit him.
Extraordinary person: (a step towards Oliver) It seems that you need a steak (note 3), right, Oliver?
Oliver: (pointing to the bandage near the eye) Thank you, Dad. The doctor will show it to me.
[This extraordinary man is Oliver Barrett third, even though his only son is extremely unhappy to disagree with him.
Barrett: I mean fill in your vomit, boy.
Oliver and his father walked side by side.
Oliver: Thank you, sir. I have to eat with the team.
[Oliver prefers to respect more than affection, calling his father his husband.
Barrett: Ah... of course. Well. (Pauses) Does your face still hurt?
[The wound on my face is obviously painful, but Oliver...
Oliver: No, sir.
Barrett: I asked Jack Wells to show you on Monday.
Oliver: It's not necessary, Dad.
Barrett: Jack is an expert.
Oliver: (pointing to his injury) It's nothing great.
[They walked in silence.
Barrett: My car is there. Do you want me to take you somewhere?
Oliver: No, let me get you in the car.
Barrett: Tell me, Oliver, is there any news from law school?
Oliver: I haven't finally decided whether to enter law school.
Barrett: I just ask you whether the law school decided to admit you.
Oliver: I don't know, sir.
[They walked a few more steps.
Barrett: Of course, there won't be many problems.
Oliver: About what, sir?
Barrett: Law school needs talents like you.
Oliver: But they don't have a hockey team, Dad.
Barrett: You have other talents, Oliver.
Oliver glanced at his father, hoping that he could be more specific about what "talents" he had. They walked to the car.
Barrett: Okay...
[Oliver reaches out his hand to his father. They shook hands and said goodbye.
Oliver: Say hello to my mother for me.
[Old Barre nodded, and got into the luxury car, there was a roar of a high-horsepower engine. Old Barrett stared at Oliver, who was standing there blankly with a pocket for hockey gear on his shoulders.
Oliver: (Uncomfortable but very sincere) Really... I'm sorry. You came so far away to see Harvard and suffered a defeat.
Barrett: (Also sincerely) I came to see you play.
[There was a moment of silence, and both of them were embarrassed by this "outflow of love" and each wanted to cover it up with their usual postures. Oliver shrugged, and Old Barrett found a word.
Barrett: You know, Oliver, the dean of law school is my old classmate.
Oliver: (Insincerely) That would be great, sir.
[There is another moment of silence.
Barrett: Good night, Oliver.
Oliver: Good night, sir.
[Old Barrett hurries away.
〔Oliver is greatly relieved as he watches his father go away.
14
[In the Burrig Building at Radcliffe College, the ringing of the telephone exchange is humming. The female student working at the exchange desk spoke into the microphone: "Good evening. This is the Burrig Building."
Oliver walked into the dormitory building with wound cream on his eyes and wounds on his face. Switchboard girl: (to the microphone) Sandy Davidson, there is your phone in room two.
[Oliver approaches the exchange station.
Oliver: Please call me Jenny Cavinelli.
Switchboard girl: She answers the phone on the ground floor.
Oliver: Where is the ground floor?
Girl at the exchange station: There is around the corner.
[He walks toward the lounge of the dormitory building.
[Jenny is talking vigorously with someone on the phone. The door of the telephone room was open, and Jenny's voice was getting louder and louder.
Jenny: (arguing) Yes, yes. That's it for once! I beg you, please look at God's points! !
〔Oliver appears in the aisle leading to the telephone room in the lounge and walks slowly towards Jenny.
Jenny: (Yelling to the ring) Yes! Of course! Indeed it is! (Suddenly full of sorrow, tenderly) Oh, so do I, Phil, I love you too. (Send a loud kiss to the microphone)
[Oliver heard the last few sentences of this conversation. He stopped, stunned-his heart was stabbed.
〔Jenny hung up the receiver and walked towards Oliver. With a cynical look, he gently kissed Oliver on the cheek. Oliver decided not to stop there. He pretended to be hard-hearted.
Jenny: Hey, how did you make it like this?
Oliver: I was injured, Jenny.
Jenny: (meaning the exhausted scars on his face) Didn't you make the other guy more ugly?
[She took his arm and walked towards the front door.
Oliver: I did. (Pointingly) I can always make the other guy more ugly.
[Oliver and Jenny came out the front door a few minutes later and went down the steps. Jenny was very happy. Oliver made a strong smile, but he couldn't hide the pain in his heart.
Oliver: Hello, James?
Jenny: What's the matter?
Oliver: (playing nonchalantly) Uh...who is Phil?
Jenny: (seriously) My dad.
[Oliver breathed a sigh of relief, but he was still a little doubtful.
Oliver: Do you call your father "Phil"?
Jenny: That is his name. How do you call your father?
Oliver: The villain.
Jenny: In front of him?
Oliver: I have never seen him in his true colors.
Jenny: Is he wearing a mask?
Oliver: In a sense, yes.
Jenny: Go on-he must be terribly arrogant. Is my son a Harvard sports star?
Oliver: So did he himself.
Jenny: Have you ever participated in a bigger competition than the "Ivy League" games?
Oliver: He participated in the 1928 Olympic single scull rowing competition.
Jenny: Oh. (Thinking about it) Did you win?
Oliver: No.
[He said this with expression as if saying: "Thank God, fortunately he didn't win."
Jenny: Why do you call him the villain?
Oliver: Because he controls me. He forced me to do what he called "serious things".
Jenny: What's wrong with doing "serious things"? Up
Oliver: I don't want to let others arrange my future according to the traditions of the Barrett family. I don’t like how many points I have to earn every semester.
Jenny: (sarcastically) Oh, is it? No wonder you hate the list of outstanding students the most, and you don't even want to participate in the "Ivy League" Games...
Oliver: (sorrowfully) What I hate is that he forced me to reach that level, and when I got it, he seemed unimaginably nonchalant.
Jenny: This is so funny.
Oliver: Do you know what "Kornal" said to me after that game?
Jenny: (surprised) He went there so far to watch you play?
[Oliver is still on the fire, Benben ignored what Jenny asked.
Oliver: (The more you talk about it, the more angry it gets) When we lost the championship and I was almost beaten to death by those savage beasts, you know that this famous banker and Harvard University alumni Barrett told him What did the son say?
Jenny: (still asking her question) Did he drive that far to Ithaca?
Oliver: (Exaggeratedly imitating) "Tell me, Oliver, is there any news from law school?"
[He stares at Jenny, feeling that he has fully demonstrated his point of view.
[She does not answer.
Oliver: Isn't that enough to show his cold heart?
Jenny: (calmly) So, what do you expect him to say? Ask "How is your sex life"?
Oliver: Hi...Whose side are you on?
Jenny: Is this a war?
Oliver: (want to get rid of this topic) You don't understand, Jenny.
Jenny: Fuck you: I understand better than you hope to understand. Your father-I'm sorry-that "big villain" at least didn't get a bad score, right?
[Oliver is stopped by the question--it stings again.
Oliver: (coldly) He won the "Rhodes Scholarship".
Jenny: Look, Barrett's family has a top-notch player, and the problem is coming.
Oliver: Forget it. no big deal.
Jenny: (sarcastically) Who said there was something?
〔Jenny sees it thoroughly and hits the point, which really makes Oliver difficult to fight. He had to find opportunities to fight back and try to save face.
Oliver: Listen... Did I call my father and send him a kiss on the phone? Have I ever said to an old man "I love you, Phil; I love you, Phil"?
Jenny: (Sorry) That's not true.
Oliver: (holds the ground) Aha! This is not enough!
15
[On the Radcliffe campus. The Barrett Building gradually appeared in the background.
Jenny: When you pass by it, can't you even make a minimum salute?
Oliver: (shakes his head) This is the ugliest building in the school.
[They continue to move forward.
Oliver: I haven't even entered.
Jenny: You are so knowledgeable!
Oliver: Listen to me, it is not easy to withstand the test of history. I mean, how many people can match themselves with the reputation of the Barrett Building?
Jenny: (gently and affectionately) I can name two people...
Oliver: (makes a face) Don't be it!
[They walk into a group of students.
16
[Jenny’s voice outside the picture: You are going to fail the exam, Oliver.
〔afternoon. Oliver's room. Jenny sits in a chair doing "harmony" homework. Oliver was sitting across from her and reading a book.
Jenny: If you just watch me study like this, you will get zero points.
Oliver: Who just watched you study? Am I not learning?
Jenny: Nonsense. You are obviously looking at my thigh.
Oliver: It's just a glance occasionally. Read a chapter and take a look.
Jenny: Oh? The chapters in this book couldn't be shorter.
Oliver: Listen to me, Cavin Riley, you are not so beautiful yet.
Jenny: I know that. But if you want to think like that, what can I do?
[He drops the book and walks to the chair where she is sitting.
Oliver: Jenny, if the sky is above, I want to make friends with you every second, how can I read John Stuart Mill's book?
Jenny: (in an exhorting tone) Oliver, don't do that.
Oliver: (eagerly) Jenny...
Jenny: (No longer insisting) Oliver...please...
[He reaches over and takes her hand. She stood up and hugged him.
〔The harpsichord sounds euphemistically.
[Slow motion of the two being in love. They whispered affectionately. His head rested quietly on her neck—a small golden cross hung there.
Oliver: (touches the golden cross) Do you think your priest would want you to do this?
Jenny: I don't have a priest.
Oliver: Are you not a good girl who believes in Catholicism?
[Silence for a while. Continue to speak their whispers.
Jenny: How do you say it? I am a girl, (pauses) and a good girl-what do you think?
[He looks at her affectionately, smiles and agrees. She also smiled back at him to express her gratitude.
Jenny: Three conditions, I meet two.
Oliver: Then why do you wear it?
Jenny: That's mother's.
Oliver: Why did you leave again?
Jenny: What?
Oliver: Why did you leave the church?
Jenny: I don't know. I never really believed in it. I can't believe that there is a better world than the mortal world. (Pauses) I mean, there is nothing better than Bach or Mozart. And you!
[There is a moment of silence.
Oliver: Jenny!
Jenny: Huh?
Oliver: Can I compare with Mozart and Bach?
[She looks into his eyes, smiles affectionately, and nods with certainty.
Jenny: Oh, yes, there is also the "Beatles" band.
〔The two sit silently, they just confide their sincere love to each other with eager eyes.

[There is a rapid knock on the door of the dormitory. Baker Simpson enters the screen and opens the door. In the corridor outside the door stood Oliver's roommate Ray Stratton.
Ray: Hey, I said, Simpson, let me study in your room for a while, how about?
Hank: Why?
Ray: (pointing behind his shoulder) Now, Barrett is...
[There is another rapid knock on the door at the other end of the screen.
[Hank Simpson enters the screen again and opens the door. Ray Stratton was still standing in the corridor outside the door.
Ray: Hello, Simpson. Let me sleep on your couch!
Hank: What's the matter?
Ray: (points to the back of his shoulder) Barrett...
Hank: Which VIP is it?
Ray: Cavin Riley.
Hank: Here again? Is it her? Barrett really fell in love.
Lei: (groaningly) Hey, guys, what do you know? I think he is sick, really sick.
Hank: (Curiously) What did you say?
Ray: I said he was sick, Hank. Head overwhelmed and behaved abnormally.
Hank: (listening dumb) Really? What's wrong with him?
Lei: (Head down dejected) The blame is that he is tight-lipped at me (pauses).
Hank: Anything else? anything else?
Ray: It's this strange disease: Barrett doesn't breathe at me for anything. I mean, I don’t care about getting out of sight every afternoon, or finding a place to sleep every weekend. I mean, in the past, he would repay if he was sentimental. But now, such days are gone forever!
Hank: Why? Why are you not talking?
Lei: Yesterday, I asked him a simple question. I said, "Barrett, just to confirm. Tell me, did you live with Cavin Riley?"
Hank: Goodness! What do you want to prove? On-site photography?
Lei: (sadly) Do you know how he answered me? Do you know what he said to me, his long-term consultant on gender relations?
Hank: (Can't wait) What? What did he say?
Lei: He said: "Ask me again and I will tell you to swallow your teeth!"
Hank: Really?
Lei: (shaking his head) I'm telling you, he and the girl do not know what they are doing.
Hank: (hesitatingly) Don't you think...this might be the so-called...love?
Ray: At his age? I mean, does Barrett know that stuff?
[Hank shrugs and says, "I can't tell."
[The camera moves slowly forward, so that the door of Oliver's suite across the corridor can be seen more clearly. A tie was hung on the door-a traditional sign, meaning: "There is action inside. Please avoid it."
Hank: Who is in it?
Huo: Cavin Riley.
Hank: Is it her again? Barrett was really "caught."
Lei: It's incurable, he is still tight-lipped to me!

〔afternoon. Dunster Boarding House Library. Some amateur art enthusiasts in universities are playing Bach’s Fort Brighton Piano Concerto No. 5. The piano's voice is slightly high-pitched. The winter sun poured into the house through the large glass windows. Jenny is wearing glasses and is playing the piano intently. The camera pans the entire room leisurely, and you can see some pretty young college students, as well as some elderly wives... and so on. In the back corner, Oliver was standing there neatly, staring at Jenny.
[The music ends. applause. The players stood up and bowed to everyone. From Oliver's proud eyes, it is not difficult to see who he is applauding for-just her.
[Men and male musicians begin to walk out of the library door.
Oliver and Jenny also walked out with the people.
Oliver: I didn't expect you to be so great.
Jenny: You still know some music.
Oliver: I know enough.
Jenny: Be smart, okay, Barrett? I played just fine, not great. Can't keep up with the almighty level of the "Ivy League". It's just okay, right?
Oliver: (Expressing a concession) Let it go.
[At this moment they have walked to the gate of Dunster Boarding House. Outside the door is the Charles River. Oliver led Jenny to walk side by side along the river bank.
Oliver: I mean, you should study hard.
Jenny: God has eyes, who said I didn't plan that way?
(Hesitates slightly) Aren't I going to Be Nana Braanger as a teacher?
Oliver: Who are you talking about?
Jenny: (semi-frankly) I got a scholarship to study in Paris next year.
Oliver: Go to Paris?
Jenny: I have been to Europe from Zhu. I really want to go right away.
Oliver: Hey...how long have you been aware of this news?
[An awkward silence for a moment. Jenny managed to avoid it.
Jenny: Ollie, don't be silly. This is inevitable.
Oliver: What do you mean?
Jenny: (avoiding Oliver's gaze) We graduated and we all have our own lives. You go to law school...
Oliver: What are you talking about?
Jenny: You are the son of a millionaire's preparatory student, and I have no social status.
Oliver: Does it have to go separate ways? Outrageous! Don't we get along well? We are happy.
Jenny: Ollie, Harvard University is like Santa’s pocket... all weird toys are stuffed into it. But once the holidays are over, they all have to be poured out...
Oliver: (Protestingly) This is not a holiday...
Jenny: But you have to go back to the social circle you belong to.
Oliver: You mean, you are going back to Carleston, Rhode Island to bake pastries?
[She stops and looks at him.
Jenny: What kind of cakes, don't make my father happy.
Oliver: Then don't leave me. Jenny. (Pauses) I beg you.
Jenny: (Silent for a moment) What about my scholarship? What about Paris? I'm so old, I'm not lucky enough to go there to open my eyes!
Oliver: What about our marriage?
Jenny: Who told you about marriage?
Oliver: Me. I'm taking you now.
Jenny: Do you want to marry me?
Oliver: Yes.
[Stopped.
Jenny: Why?
Oliver: Just because I want to marry you.
〔She smiles, her eyes glowing.
Jenny: This is a good reason.
〔Jenny held Oliver and walked down the river bank.

[Boston Straw Road-near the Yacht Club.
Foreground: Charles Ho is rippling on a canoe; background scene: There is a constant flow of traffic.
[A one-way lane in the city center. Oliver's old car galloped past.
Jenny: (Voiceover) Are you crazy, driving so fast?
Oliver: (Voiceover) This is Boston. Everyone drives like crazy.
Jenny: You, don't wait for your parents to clean up us, you will clean up the palladium yourself first.
Oliver: Jenny, my parents will like you.
[Sitting in the speeding car, Oliver looks extremely disturbed. Jenny was also at a loss for the upcoming meeting.
Jenny: Even that "big villain" would like it?
Oliver: Who?
Jenny: Your father.
Oliver: Of course, it must be fine. Where is your Radcliffe confidence?
Jenny: Stayed at Radcliffe.
[He reaches over and touches her clenched hand.
Oliver: Everything will be fine, James.
[Oliver’s car is driving towards Ipswich, Massachusetts. The tone of their conversation seemed low and reserved.
Jenny: What did you say on the phone?
Oliver: I just said I would come home and have a look.
Jenny: Just by the way, eh?
Oliver: Yes. good.
〔after awhile.
Jenny: How many times did you go home this semester?
Oliver: (honestly) Not once.
Jenny: Oh, this is really rare.
[Country Avenue in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Oliver's car broke into the screen. His excited driving style shows how nervous he is.
[Oliver's car rammed, and suddenly passed the door of his house. The car stopped abruptly. He backed the car and drove into the private driveway of the house.
20
[The Barrett’s mansion is huge and old. The lawn was paved in the seventeenth century. Oliver can drive at high speed in the mansion. It is not difficult to see how expensive it was to build such a grand residence in the past.
Jenny: Hey, Oliver...Stop! Don't be kidding... Stop the car!
[He drove the car to the side of the road and stopped.
〔Jenny is surprised when faced with such a luxurious mansion.
Jenny: Oliver, I didn't expect it to be like this.
Oliver: What does it look like?
Jenny: So lavish! I mean... it's too much for me.
Oliver: Take it easy, James. They treat people very well.
Jenny: I know. But for some reason, I suddenly remembered, I wish my name was Abigail Adams, or Wendy Wasper (Note 4).
[He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek.
Oliver: Don't be afraid.
Jenny: How about you?
Oliver: (Although he doesn't know his heart, he still pretends to be calm) It's okay.
[Oliver's car stopped in front of a quaint main building. He stepped out of the car and opened the door for Jenny. His father's sports car is parked nearby, the license plate is "O·B·3" (Note 5).
〔Oliver took Jenny's hand and walked to the front door and clicked the doorbell.
〔Jenny calms down a little bit, but Oliver becomes uneasy instead.
Jenny: Your hands are cold.
Oliver: So are you.
Jenny: Let's slip away while it's still too late.
[The door opens, and a white servant opens the door.
Maid: Hello, Master Oliver.
Oliver: Hello, Florence. This is Jenny.
[Jenny and Florence nod to each other. They walked into this old-fashioned building with portraits hung on both sides.
Jenny: (whispering to Oliver) "Master"! I knew you had a slave.
Florence: (I didn't hear Jenny, speaking to Oliver) Your parents are both in the library.
Oliver: Thank you.
[The two of them pass through the guest house holding hands. Jenny glanced suspiciously at the portraits hanging on both sides of the living room. She recognized quite a few of them.
Jenny: (speaking to Oliver in shock) Boy, half of the names on the Harvard buildings are hung here!
Oliver: (Comforting her) Nothing unusual.
Jenny: (notices a picture) Hey, I didn't expect that you are also related to the Sivard Rowing Club.
Oliver: Yeah. You see, I just came out of piles of wood and stones.
[He puts his hand on her shoulder and leads her around a bend to a very spacious room with ancient and luxurious furnishings. Although the finest antiques and furniture are dazzlingly displayed, the room still looks a bit empty. In the room sat Barrett's Third and Mrs.-a pampered noble couple. Old Barrett got up to welcome.
Barrett: (from a distance) Ah-hello!
[These simple words actually scared Oliver to retract the hand on Jenny's shoulder.
[Jenny, who is also very nervous, notices that Oliver is terribly scared in front of his father. The two of them continued to walk forward. The attitude of the old couple is friendly.
Oliver: (Always a eloquent genius, flying without a trace at the moment) This...I...Uh...I want to introduce you to Jenny Calvinley.
Jenny: (corrects politely) It's Cavin Riley.
Mrs. Barrett: (greeting Jenny) Is it Cavin Riley Roskincana that Cavin Riley?
Jenny: Yes. (Slightly smiles) But there are no relatives.
Mrs. Barrett: Oh.
Barrett: It's nice to meet you. (Loquat reaches Oliver) How are you, boy?
Oliver: (waves to greet) Oh...oh...well, Dad.
[Then, as if remembering again, he shook hands with his father perfunctorily.
Mrs. Barrett: (to Jenny) Sit down, please.
[The young couple sit down. Oliver was very nervous.
Oliver: We have to go soon.

Camera Interruption
[Oliver and Jenny drive back to school.
Jenny: Why are you so emotionally unharmonious with your parents?
Oliver: (naively) How can you have such an impression?
Jenny: You have entered heaven like a stranger.
Oliver: It's not heaven there.
twenty two
The camera returns to Barrett's house
[Refreshment is here. The brief conversation continued. Old Barrett took the initiative to talk with Jenny.
Barrett: (to Jenny) What occupations do your family do, Jenny?
Jenny: (Politely) My father bake pastry.
[Old Barre nods. This answer seems to be a typical literati's humble words, so that the old Barrett thought he was talking with a descendant of Nabisco.
Barrett: (to Jenny) What is his business name?
Jenny: (Thinking about it) Phil Pastry Shop.
[Jenny answered calmly and bluntly, without blushing at all. After a pause, the old Baxiaot and his wife concealed their surprise very sophisticatedly. Oliver added a sentence "seeking truth from facts" as much as possible.
Oliver: In Rhode Island, Carleston.
Barrett: (without expression) Oh. How great!
[Silence again. How can the conversation go on? Mrs. Barrett then started another conversation.
Mrs. Barrett: So, everyone in your family is from Carleston, Jenny?
Jenny: Mostly yes. My mother is from Fall River City.
Barrett: The Barrett family opened several factories there.
Oliver: (to add his dad's words)...there have exploited generations of poor people in New England there.
Barrett: (Adding his son's words) It was in the nineteenth century.
[Pause for a while. Mrs. Barrett robbed her son in a pleasing manner.
Mrs. Barrett: Oliver, after you inherit the property, you can take all our money to them as compensation...
Oliver: (In the tone of a social scientist) This is exactly what the philosopher Saint Simon preached...
Barrett: ...in the eighteenth century.
[Who won this round? No matter who wins, the prize is an embarrassing silence.
Oliver: Ah! It's getting late.
Jenny: Why are you in a hurry?
Mrs. Barrett: You have to eat dinner before leaving, right?
Jenny: (Without thinking) Of course.
Oliver: (Said at the same time as Jenny's answer) No.
[Oliver exchanged glances with Jenny.
Oliver: (to Jenny gently) I have to go back.
Barrett: (smiling amiably) You stay for dinner. This is an order.
twenty three
Camera Interruption
[Oliver and Jenny drive back to school. Oliver got more and more angry.
Oliver: Everything is an order, an instruction, and a requirement.
Jenny: Where is your sense of humor?
Oliver: (Indignation) When I was in school, he sent me a memo! (Emphasis) Memo! Don't you think this is too funny?
Jenny: I think this is really interesting.
twenty four
The camera went back to the old Barrett's house.
[In the restaurant, two pairs of people are sitting at the table. The house is also very spacious, with exquisite car glass and Revere silver cutlery on the dining table, but it is not too ostentatious.
〔The meal seems to be fairly good. Everyone was drinking coffee after dinner.
Barrett: Tell me, Oliver, have you heard anything from law school?
[Before answering, Oliver glanced at Jenny first, and seemed to say: "Look, I didn't make a mistake, did I? It's nagging again."
Oliver: (to his father) No, sir. Not yet.
Jenny: He will pass it. Where are they going to find someone better than Oliver?
Barrett: (to Jenny) I agree with you. He will definitely graduate with honors.
Mrs. Barrett: Oliver has always been among the best in school, even when Exter was...
〔Oliver listened to others talking about herself, although he was complimenting him, he was still very uncomfortable, and quickly interrupted them.
Oliver: What are you talking about? A large number of outstanding young people want to enter the law school, I am just one of them.
Barrett: I can call Price Zimmerman...
Oliver: (Answer immediately) No! I mean...please don't do this, sir.
Barrett: Just ask if he knows.
Oliver: (Tinglingly) No... I'm waiting to receive the admission letter with others. I beg you.
25
Camera Interruption
[Oliver and Jenny drive back to school.
Jenny: He just wants to help you.
Oliver: I don't want this kind of help. I want to be self-reliant.
Jenny: (shrugs) That's fine.
Oliver: That's not good. If he is like this. It must be messed up, he won't stop. Everything about me must work hard to make it stronger.
Jenny: What's the mess?
Oliver: Get rid of things I don't want to get rid of.
Jenny: Oh, that's it! (Laughing tenderly) Then we should keep a little more mind.
26
The camera is back to Baxiete's house
〔night. Oliver and Jenny are getting in Oliver's car. The old Barrets stood outside and waved goodbye to them.
Mrs. Barrett: You two take care of yourself!
Barrett: Be careful when driving, Oliver. (Pauses) "If you don't be afraid of being late, you won't be afraid of it."
〔As soon as Jenny closed the car door, Oliver drove off like an astronaut.
27
[Oliver and Jenny really drove back to school.
Jenny: How can your relationship with your parents be so unharmonious?
Oliver: Why do you have this impression?
[The car has driven a few miles. Maybe he's already on the number one man Luo. Jenny continued to comment on Oliver.
Jenny: You seem to be deliberately messing with your father...
Oliver: Is there a relationship? Didn’t you notice?
Jenny: I don't think you will make a slight concession on any issue in order to please the old man.
Oliver: It is impossible to please Barrett third.
Jenny: (Knowingly speaking) But on the question of your marrying Jenny Cavinelli...
[Oliver reacted extremely strongly to this sentence. He was irritated and stopped the car abruptly, but said angrily to Jenny.
Oliver: Do you really think so?
Jenny: (calmly) I think this is part of the problem.
Oliver: Jenny, don't you believe that I love you?
Jenny: I believe it. Moreover, you still inexplicably love my social background which is contrary to yours.
Oliver: No!
[Oliver feels wronged. Jenny tried to make him understand.
Jenny: I can't make a judgment yet, Ollie. I just think so (gently and difficultly). What I mean is that I not only love you as a person... (hesitating) but also the reputation of your family and everything about your family.
[They stare at each other. Jenny's sincere and frank confession made them both look very excited.
Jenny: All in all, these are the parts of why you are you!
〔Oliver moved. He turned to hug her.
Oliver: How can you do it, Jenny?
Jenny: What do you do?
Oliver: Know my family well, but still love me.
Jenny: (Emotionally) Isn't this an objective existence? Preppy.
[At night, Oliver's MG car is galloping on the country road.
28
[Boston Harvard Club. This is a very luxurious old Boston restaurant. The customers (all men) are the pampered old Bostonians. Oliver sat opposite his father, both of them were very cautious.
Barrett: How have you been, boy?
Oliver: It's okay. Yes, Dad.
Barrett: Is there news from law school? ^
Oliver: Yes, yes, dad. Hmm... I called you, don't you remember?
Barrett: Oh, yes, congratulations. You will be the first person in the Barrett family to make it to the Supreme Court.
[Silence for a moment. Oliver felt a little ashamed that his father had said the lofty goal he had longed for long ago, and his father's "spur" deeply hurt his self-esteem.
Oliver: I might just be a little judge who follows the ambulance all day long.
Barrett: Yes, not bad. (Pauses) What happened to Raymond?
Oliver: It's pretty good. Entered O·C·S·.
Barrett: Enlisted?
Oliver: Yes.
Barrett: Promising.
Oliver: (suffocating) Nothing good.
[Stopped. Oliver had to attack.
Oliver: Dad: You haven't mentioned Jenny a word yet.
Barrett: What is there to say? You have brought us a fait accompli.
Oliver: But what do you think?
Barrett: She didn't say anything! Moreover, a girl born like her can overcome many obstacles and enter an institution of higher learning like Radcliffe...
Oliver: Don't be circumspect, please speak bluntly!
Barrett: (The tone remains unchanged) The problem is not with the lady, but with you.
Oliver: It's me?
Barrett: Your betrayal.
Oliver: Oh?
Barrett: You are the old man who betrayed you, Oliver.
Oliver: I don't understand. How could it be a betrayal to marry a smart and beautiful Radcliffe high-achieving wife? I mean, she is not that absurd hippie.
Barrett: There are so many things she is not!
[Oliver understands the challenge he faces.
Oliver: Dad, what is the most unsatisfactory thing about you—is it a Catholic or is she poor?
[Silence for a moment.
Barrett: What is her most attractive to you?
〔Oliver gets irritated and stands up and wants to go.
Oliver: I'm leaving.
Barrett: Don't be so impatient! Gosh!
[Oliver sits down again, trying not to visit his father.
Barrett: I just want you to slow down.
Oliver: How long is the "click"?
Barrett: Finished law school. If it is true love, it should stand the test of time.
Oliver: Of course it is true. But why have to withstand this kind of tyrannical test?
Barrett: Because I ask you to do this...
Oliver: (with a big temper) I was ordered to...
[Old Barrett's patience is also limited. He finally had a showdown.
Barrett: Oliver, if you marry her now, you won't have a good life! I and you have to go our separate ways.
[Oliver stands up, ignoring that this brother is a conversation between the two, and speaks loudly.
Oliver: Dad, you don't know what living is at all!
[Oliver turns and walks out of the dining room. The alumni next door couldn't help looking at the father and son in surprise. Every member of the Boston Harvard club knows Barrett and his son. This kind of aggression has gone beyond the scope of private disputes. This is a shame in public.
29
[On Sunday afternoon on the main street of Caliston, Rhode Island, Oliver's car drove into this quiet town. For Jenny, this is hometown; for Oliver, it is uncharted territory. Jenny happily pointed out the "historical sites" for Oliver along the way.
Jenny: We just passed by my junior high school.
Oliver: (Considering more important issues) I don't believe that your father would like someone like me who has become dishonest overnight.
Jenny: He will like you, I swear. At least, we now have the same points. My God, when I first told him Oliver Barrett...
Oliver: Go on, go on...
Jenny: He can't believe it. He kept reminding me not to forget the eleventh commandment (Note 6).
Oliver: The eleventh commandment?
Jenny: "Don't tease your father."
〔Oliver is not sure whether she will be attracted by her father.
Oliver: Is there any other "commandment" I should pay attention to?
Jenny: Yes. (Said with a comforting smile) Be calm.
[A few minutes later, I went to the residential area of Carleston, Rhode Island. There is only one row of wooden houses with two families. Everything shows that this is not a place of wealth. Oliver's car stopped. He and Jenny got out of the car.
[This is Sunday afternoon, and many people are sitting on the balcony in front of the door. The arrival of Jenny Cavinelli, a locally recognized and outstanding girl, cannot fail to attract attention.
[Oliver, a stranger in an Italian-American paradise, is a little bit embarrassed. Jenny took his hand and greeted everyone one by one while leading him to her home. At this moment, the eyes of the neighbors were all on Oliver.
[They went up the steps in front of Jenny's house. Oliver became more anxious.
Oliver: (Troublesomely) So, your father is in favor of Rowe, Jenny? Will he agree to Luo?
〔Jenny's big delicate eyes, gleaming with joy-I am sincerely happy to completely surrender Oliver.
Jenny: What do you think?
[Phil Cavinelli's voice overlaps the screen (angrily) "I don't allow it: I don't allow this kind of thing!"
30
[Cavin Riley's house. It is impossible for this house to appear in the "Home and Garden" magazine. However, this neat (if not splendid) garden is elegantly furnished and comfortable. There are one or two icons on the wall of the house. As Phil Cavinelli walked back and forth, he could catch a glimpse of an old-fashioned household grand piano.
[The conversation with Phil is halfway through. He is a simple, enthusiastic, nearly fifty-year-old man. His very excited and emotional character tells us where Jenny's character comes from.
Phil: I don't allow this kind of thing! Did you hear me clearly?
Jenny: Phil, don't fight the windmill like Don Quixote.
Phil: (Enraged, scolding Jenny) Don't compare his father to a windmill. He is a citizen of Boston with an identity. I'm still going to call him.
Oliver: Mr. Cavin Riley, please don't...
Phil: (to Oliver, lovingly) Phil-my name is Phil. (To Jenny, getting excited again) I want to call his old man. I even plan to go to Boston in person!
Jenny: (The same loud voice as usual) There will be no results, Phil.
Phil: (to Oliver) What would he think?
Jenny: He will think you are a little irrational.
Phil: Is it because I can't tolerate this kind of thing? Is it because I can't tolerate a child who abandons himself as an elder?
Oliver: But, I also abandoned him, Mr. Cavin Riley...
Phil: Phil...
Oliver: Phil, sir, I also abandoned him.
Phil: Don't say that, Oliver. Fatherly love cannot be forgotten, and it should be respected. Father's love is precious.
Oliver: (gritting his teeth, sarcastically) Especially in my house.
Phil: (Paternalistic order) Hang him up.
Oliver: (disagrees, but nods) Oh...oh. There is a "cold line" between my father and me.
Phil: (With the feeling that love can conquer everything) He will be soft-hearted, Oliver, will be soft-hearted, and will thaw. Believe me, when the time to go to church comes...
[Oliver exchanged awkward glances with Jenny.
Jenny: Oh... Phil...
Phil: Huh?
Jenny: About going to church...
Phil: The church? What's going on?
Jenny: Hmm...somewhat different views.
Phil: Oh. (Pauses) Oh... okay. I...not saying that you have to go to the Catholic Church. Oh... I mean... (to Oliver) Jenny is a Catholic, maybe she told you. Her mother is a saint and has always dreamed of one...you know...the whole mass. But... (trying to appear to be an open elder) Your hall, Oliver. God will bless you in any church.
[Oliver and Jenny exchanged glances again: I have to tell him tactfully.
Jenny: Well, Phil...
Phil: Come on, James?
Jenny: About that god...
Phil: (raised eyebrows) What's the matter?
Jenny: We don't want it anymore.
Phil: No more? God who rules all things?
[The eyes of the two young men are drooping. Phil felt that it was getting harder and harder to be the reasonable old man he wanted to be.
Jenny: Hmm...Yes, Phil.
Oliver: (Politely) Neither of us believes in God. We don't want to be hypocrites.
[Silence for a moment. Phil can figure out everything.
Phil: Oh, of course. I mean... as long as you two want to. But tell me, who will preside over the wedding?
Oliver: Us.
[Phil was stunned again. But no matter what happens, he is determined to be an open elder.
Phil: (Anxiously) You guys? Do you mean "you" yourself?
[Oliver and Jenny nodded and admitted.
〔This is really a bit called Phil, "I can't eat, I have to go around"...
Phil: Hey, too...too...well. I think this is really [...great. "Host yourself." I... mean... how great. (Silent for a while) But is this...oh...what's that called?
Jenny: Legal?
Phil: Yes... Yes. Is it legal?
Jenny: (patiently) Ask a school pastor...
Phil: (Relieved) Oh...
Jenny: (Continued) He will only preside, and the bride and groom will give speeches to each other.
Phil: The bride also delivered a speech?
Jenny: It's a new era now, Phil.
[Phil was stunned by this series of "sudden attacks." His expression that looked like a world away was inconsistent with the opening words.
Phil: Uh, yes! It's so new, so new that you can't believe it.

[Office of the Dean of Harvard Law School. Dean William Thompson, in his forties, a scholar of higher education, exquisite clothing, and a bow tie on his upper body. Oliver also dressed neatly, but looked nervous.
Dean: We expect you to enter law school next year.
Oliver: I hope so, Dean Thompson. But I ran into some troubles.
Dean: I hope you have not changed your ambitions.
Oliver: Oh no. I still want to enter law school. It's just (it's hard to tell) I need a scholarship.
Dean: Oh? is it?
Oliver: That's why I came to you.
Dean: This really surprised me. Judging from your family background!
Oliver: But, I am not his son anymore.
Dean: What did you say?
Oliver: There was a disagreement between us, we parted ways.
[Hearing this, the dean becomes uneasy. What he expected from Barrett's house was far from a little tuition.
Dean: This is unfortunate, Mr. Barrett.
Oliver: I'm not here for fun!
Dean: But we have so many students who are financially more difficult than you...
Oliver: Is there anything more difficult than extreme poverty?
〔The Dean of Ling Ruo Frost seemed indifferent to Oliver's request.
Oliver: (eagerly) Dean Thompson, I will get married next month. The two of us are going to work during the summer vacation. Jenny is going to teach in a private school, but this is only enough for a living? The tuition fee has not yet been determined. Your tuition is quite expensive, Dean Thompson.
Dean: Well... yes.
[Oliver bites his head again and goes on.
Oliver; Dean Thompson, I want to apply for a scholarship. I am a top student at Harvard, I have been admitted, and I don't have a copper plate in the bank.
Dean: You have a millionaire father.
Oliver: There was once, Dean, there was once. Why do you treat me differently now because I had a relationship with a rich man?
Dean: Mr. Barrett, I do believe that our office should not be involved in a family dispute. There is nothing we can do.
[Oliver sees that there is no hope, so he stands up with restraint.
Oliver: Thank you, Mr. Thompson.
[The dean also stands up. They shook hands.
Dean: Maybe, due...
Oliver: (sarcastically) Thanks again. You have spent so much time for me, you can't be more polite...
[Phil Cavinelli's voice overlaps: (muttering to himself) "Amen".

[In an old house at Harvard University. Both Phil Cavinry and Oliver's roommate Raymond Stretton wore their best clothes. In the background, Oliver and Jenny stood face to face. Pastor Timothy Brouwert stood behind them, without the priest's burqa.
[This room is the study of Pastor Br
