When I first started watching a movie, the dazzling plot made it difficult for me to continue watching it. I thought the show was as ridiculous as a farce. It wasn't until I got closer to its theme step by step and felt the emotional theme permeated in the play that my heart gradually became heavier, which made me fall into contemplation.
Behind the seemingly absurd lies the necessity, that is, the consideration of interests and human nature. Judge Danforth and Parris in the play are not completely unaware of the children's lies. At first, Parris obviously didn't believe in the devil's statement, and he was even more worried that he would be ousted by enemies of other factions. However, when he found that admitting the devil's existence could bring his own benefits, he supported this statement with peace of mind. In order to maintain his authority and dignity, Danforth did not care about justice. Even if he finally realized the seriousness of the problem, he only thought of coercing the arrested person into admitting his deal with the devil. The little girls were not noticed and had no right to speak, but in this incident, they obviously became the protagonists, appearing in court to testify and accusing others, and their status was obviously improved in the process. It seems to be more respected and even squeezes the life and death of others. So starting from their heart, they were unwilling to let go of this opportunity. In my opinion, one of the heavy aspects of this drama is that it exposes the ugliness, darkness, and greed of human nature to the full. We can see how much people can consider for themselves, and how to obliterate them for their own benefit. Something called a person.
According to the classics, this drama is based on the witch incident that occurred in Sarin Village, Massachusetts, in the 17th century, insinuating and satirizing the McCarthyist communist suspicion cloud, that is, during the Red Panic period, the US government used the name of arresting communists to attack the public. Of persecution. I may not know much about McCarthyism, but after learning so much of my country’s history, I know the Cultural Revolution. In the play, in order to survive, everyone pretends to be crazy and sells stupidly, admits the existence of the devil, and sells their neighbors and even friends. It is very much like the practice of people telling lies and betraying others during the Cultural Revolution to protect themselves from persecution. It happened in different countries, but the nature of the incident was similar. People who have experienced such a long torture, no matter whether they have been persecuted or not, they will definitely have deep pain in their hearts, and such wounds are simply difficult to heal. When people are deep in an age where black and white are turned upside down, when people need to confess to evil and falsehood without their conscience, how can they really have the courage to use their lives to defend their personality? How can I have the courage not to sell my soul to the dark? This is obviously extremely difficult, and it may be because of this. It is especially valuable to stick to his kindness like John Proctor and not to sell others for the sake of peace. I thought that in the end he would compromise because of his wife's persuasion, but the conscience deep in his heart Let him choose to give up life, there is indeed something more precious than life in the world, that is kindness and dignity.
"I have three children _ how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends?"
"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name ! """""
When he yelled these words with that kind of desperate voice from the depths of his soul, soaked in blood and tears, I think I was deeply moved by the tears. No one does not admire such a great soul. When people send heroes to the gallows, the whole world is eclipsed. John Proctor undoubtedly played the role of a martyred hero in the play. In all the chaos and despair, he still does not give up his most authentic view of the world, and he is still unwilling to sell his conscience and reputation.
The witch incident in the play can be seen as an irrational group turmoil formed by misleading individuals. Under complete religious rule and the policy of foolish people, people cannot freely pursue the truth or even a little bit of truth. Perhaps Abby's own evil was the fuse of the incident, but it was not her alone that caused the tragedy of 19 lives. The kidnapping of religion, the use of autocratic dictators, everything together shaped this tragedy. Today, we can only avoid the recurrence of tragedies if we use rationality and science to guide our lives.
Maybe God is dead, but I hope that humanity will not be annihilated.
