The content of this post is based on three summaries of the "The All Soul's Trilogy" series written by Deborah Harkness. The first one has already been broadcast, and the content of the episode and the book will be different. After the trilogy, "Time's convert" has also been published.

There is a complete electronic version of the trilogy on Kindle, plus an introduction to the scenes in the book written by the author. Chinese version netizens say there is traditional Chinese version.

Background setting

The background of the original book: In addition to humans, there are other creatures (creature) vampires, wizards, and elves (Note: Daemon is not Demon. The latter refers to demons.). In ancient times, the power of these creatures was very powerful, but because they had been living with humans and did not need to use their power, their abilities gradually became weaker and affected the survival of the race. For example, vampires can no longer transform humans by sucking blood, sorcerers have reduced their magic power, and elves have committed more and more suicides (elves are a bit nervous). According to this trend, these creatures will disappear. The book Ashmole 782 may talk about the origin of living things. MATTHEW believes that all living things originated from one species (I don’t know if it is true at this time). 782 is likely to explain how vampires, wizards and elves are produced, so the significance of this book is very significant.

The story assumes that vampires are not afraid of sunlight, and vampires can be killed. Vampires don't need to drink human blood frequently. They like to eat nuts and drink wine, but they don't like burnt human food. Vampires and humans can have XX, but vampires can only mate once in a lifetime (I don't know how to translate this word better, it is JIAO PEI in the animal kingdom). Once you meet your own MATE, you can't separate until death. So this is why Matthew said i am craving her. So Matthew is an instinctive attraction to Diana. Maybe Diana felt the same way for Matthew.

Introduction to the first book "Discovering the Witch"

Diana

Diana should be the most powerful witch ever. It should be mentioned later on this TV that it was analyzed from Diana's blood, but Diana would not use her own magic power to resist. It has something to do with her parents. Her parents are also very powerful wizards. Mom and Dad, Bishop, is also a family of wizards, so the heroine has very powerful abilities, which will be gradually revealed in the later stage. Diana's mother has the ability to predict. She foresees Matthew, and her father is a timewalker who can travel through time and space. In addition, the two of them were said to have been killed by wizards, and they died miserably.

The female protagonist is attracted as soon as they see the male protagonist. The two of them are making rapid progress, and it is estimated that they will get married at the end of the first season. Sutu appeared in the first episode. She is also a very strong witch, and she should have a confrontation with Diana later.

Matthew

Matthew's setting is a vampire of 1500. Before he became a vampire, he had a wife and children, but unfortunately they all died. Later when he committed suicide and was about to die, his vampire mother transformed him. Matthew's family de Clermont family is very powerful and snobbery, their family is also the leader of a mysterious organization. In addition to Matthew, the family also has the brother BOLDWIN, which has already been mentioned in the play. Matthew and Diana promised each other for life at the end of the first book, but the real wedding was in the second book, witnessed by Matthew's father Philippe. This role will be very important if there is a second season. Regarding the setting of the concept of Mate. It's not just Xing. Vampires can XXOO with many women, but mate only once in a lifetime. I understand that this is a bit destined. For example, Matthew's vampire father and mother, they are also mates. So he felt that way when he saw Diana. Diana's mother had already foreseen the meeting of the two of them.

Juliette

Afro is a very poor character in the book. She was trained by the vampire Gerbert to seduce Matthew. Gerbert is a very powerful vampire, once a pope. He transformed Juliette and destroyed her will, just to make her look like Matthew likes, so as to get the secrets of the Matthew family. Matthew did have a period with her, and then Matthew thought Juliette was too crazy and broke with her. Juliette got his lunch at the end of the first book.

New characters appeared in Episode 3. Agasha wilson with her son Nathaniel and his pregnant wife Sophie Norman. It is important to note these two characters. Nathanialel is an elf, but Sophie is a witch and is pregnant. Therefore, boasting race can give birth to the next generation. Sophie mentioned a white queen chess piece, which is very important.

knights of Lazarus of Bethany(S1EP5)

In the fifth episode, DIANA found a seal in MATTHEW's office. This is the seal of the Knights of Lazarus. Matthew is the leader of the knights. Original plot: After the end of the Holy War, the Knights Templar accumulated a lot of wealth and power. The Pope saw them not pleasing to his eyes, and later destroyed the Knights of Templar. All the wealth and rights of the Templars were inherited by the Knights of Lazarus. Matthew is the Grand master (the highest leader) of this knight order. When Diana & Matthew fled to 1590, the supreme leader of the Knights was transferred to Marcus. After Matthew returned to modern times, he didn't take it back. The Knights have gone through thousands of years of evolution. Although there are many wealth, there are not many people. However, Marcus recruited many knights in the later period, which played an important role in the rescue of Matthew in the third part. There are not many scenes at other times.

Are you a Daemon? Are you a Daemon?

Many people ask what capabilities the elves have? In fact, they play a very important role in the production of weavers. So what kind of creature are they? This passage is written at the end of the book, so I will translate it briefly. "Elves are creative, artistic creatures between genius and madness. Their lives are chaotic and disorderly, and they show love to those around them who identify with them. Elves are very talented and usually love music very much. The source is very complicated. Many people live in human families and don't know that their children are elves." In short, the elves referred to in this book are different from the half-human and half-god elves in the general sense.

Content summary

At the end of the first book, Diana & Matthew traveled through time and space to England in the Elizabethan period of 1590. The story is set, when modern Matthew travels back to ancient times, ancient Matthew disappears. But the vampires heard that Matthew was older, so they all knew that the pair were traversers.

This pair of ancient times had two purposes: to find the witch and teach Diana how to use magic, and to find 782. The book describes a lot of historical celebrities at that time, they are collectively called School of night. These people often gather at Matthew's house to talk and talk

Philippe asks Matthew and Diana to return to France. After a series of events in Sept-tour, Philippe accepted Diana and smeared her own blood on her forehead (Vampire's blood oath). Under the witness of Philippe, they officially held their wedding and had a bridal chamber (they were not ooxx until the second book in the book). Matthew faced his own knot of killing his father: Philippe was persecuted by the Nazis, physically and mentally devastated, and he wanted to die. Philippe also knew he would die.

Back in London, they learned that Dr. Dee, the queen's planetarium, got a book that appeared to be 782, but it turned out not. However, they learned that 782 may be in the hands of Emperor Rudolph (the Holy Roman Empire).

In London, I finally found a local witch who taught Diana magic and revealed Diana's magical attributes. Diana, like her father, is a special kind of Weaver among wizards. They usually have very powerful magic, very few in number, and are often chased by other wizards. The ability of the weaver is to create new spells. Diana can see invisible threads (threads) around the characters. She also has a celestial eye that can cross life and death, time and space. There is fire, water, and wind in her body at the same time. She also has an elf, firedrake.

There is another characteristic of Diana's magic. Her magic can only be used under certain conditions. For example, 782, the first time she was able to call this book, it was because she needed this to write thesis, but she couldn't call it the second time. She can only use her magic when she "needs" it. This is the magic that her parents cast on her to protect her from revealing her abilities too early, until her Shadow man points to Matthew to appear. So Diana's mother kept telling her the story about Shadow man.

In addition to protecting Diana and their children, Matthew needs to protect Diana and their children (he had children after getting married, but had a miscarriage. There is another one at the end of the second book.) He also needs to fulfill his mission as a multi-spy. The queen asked Matthew to go to Prague to capture Edward Kelly, the queen's alchemist. 782 is in his hands.

They finally met Ashmole782 in Prague. What is this book like? This is a book written by magic. The pages are made of human skins from vampires, witches, elves, etc. The ink for writing the book contains human blood, the pages are bound by human hair, and the ink for binding the book is refined from human bones. The people here are not humans, but vampires, witches and elves.

Matthew and Diana stole the book back to England. But the first three pages of the book were torn off by Edward Kelly. The magic of the book is destroyed, so the words in the book become invisible and move quickly. That is, we have seen the situation in the first episode. We must find the missing three pages to read 782. So even if they have 782, they can't understand this book. But how 782 got to the Oxford Library from Matthew's hands is not very clear.

On the eve of their return to modernity, Diana met her dad in London. Her father also saw 782 in the 19th century and left a note. Reluctant to leave, Diana and Matthew returned to modern times but there were even greater troubles waiting for them.

The second review (personal opinion)

The second book features Debora Harkness's detailed description of England in the Elizabethan period. Debora's research field is the history of the Elizabethan period. She has published a book about John Dee. Many historical figures appeared in the second book: Lord Northumberland, William Cecil, Christopher Marlowe, etc., even Elizabeth I also appeared, and Shakespeare also mentioned it. It will be very beautiful if it is made into a TV series.

Start the third content. Some characters will not appear in the first season, so I won’t mention them for now.

Content summary

DIANA and MATTHEW returned to modern times and found that one of their relatives had unfortunately received a lunch box. Their matter was known by Congregation, and Sept-tour had to be checked, so DIANA and MATTHEW returned to the home of MADISON in the United States. At the same time, Benjamin, a vampire son of MATTHEW, appeared. He wanted to expose the secrets of the de clemont family and threaten DIANA personally. (More on that later)

Diana met her good friend, Yale University professor Chris. Together they searched for the secrets of blood rage and book 782 in Matthew. Diana and Matthew's children were born, twins, sister Rebecca (vampire), younger brother Philip (witcher). Diana and Matthew were under pressure from the council and Baldwin. In order to protect their other vampire grandson Jack (there was a serious blood rage, Baldwin asked Matthew to kill him.), Matthew decided to leave Baldwin to form his own family. For this reason, she had no choice but to leave Diana temporarily to Orleans to establish his own family. Diana came to England to find Ashmole782 whose third page was torn, and finally got the 782 that was missing from the last page in the hands of an elf. Diana met Benjamin in the library and was in danger. Matthew successfully established his own family and rushed home to take care of Diana.

Because Benjamin repeatedly threatened Diana and Matthew, everyone decided that Benjamin had to be found to eliminate him. Matthew set off to find Benjamin and Diana went to Oxford and got Ashemole 782. The text of the entire book entered Diana's body. The text floated under her skin and within her eyes. A book appeared on her body. Mark of. At the same time everyone got Matthew captured and tortured by Benjamin. Everyone gathered together and rescued Matthew. Diana killed Peter Knox to avenge his parents and also killed Benjamin forever.

In the end of the book, Diana and Matthew established the Bishop-clemont family, and Diana represented Baldwin as the representative of the de clemont family in the parliament. And successfully overturned the treaty prohibiting inter-ethnic communication. Diana did not become a vampire in the book. We don't know how long she will live, but they will live happily together.

The origin of the brass head (the third episode)

The brass head is related to two people: Roger Bacon and Benjamin. Roger Bacon is the owner of the 782 book. 782 is called by Bacon: The Secret of Secrets, and for non-human beings, this book is called Book of life. Benjamin knew that the book was in Bacon's hands, so he found this brass head, which is said to be predictable. But Bacon took the head but didn't give the book to Benjamin. Later, the head fell into the hands of Gerbert, which appeared in the third episode. In history, Roger Bacon was really famous for making mechanical heads.

A note from the weaver

In the magical world, spells have a life cycle. As time goes by, it will gradually lose its effectiveness. The old spell will not work for a long time and will eventually die. And with the advent of new things such as computers, medieval spells are useless. Therefore, weavers are needed in the magical world to compose spells for other wizards and witches to use.

These weavers usually possess very powerful magical powers, but they do not perform like ordinary wizards. So Diana didn't show very powerful magic when she was a child (but Diana has been a time traveler since she was a child.) Diana's father is also like this, generally unable to see the ability of weaver. Diana's power is very powerful. She can summon water (seeing Matthew leaving crying), can summon wind (in the episode, she also controls the wind to fly when she escapes from Satu later), and can control fire (confronting Juliette) That paragraph), can control the wood (summon the rowan tree), and what’s more, she can travel through time (inherit her father), switch life and death (inherit her mother). In London in 1590, Diana met her magic teacher, who was also a Weaver. When Diana's magic power was awakened, the Pokemon firedrake--Corra appeared.

This picture is for reference only. The book describes CORRA's two feet, with a heart-shaped tail tip.

When Diana weaves magic, she asks questions first, and then weaves the knot with the magic thread wrapped around her hand. Normal weavers usually use 9 knots, but Diana can tie 10 knots because she can control life and death.

Blood Rage

Ysabeau de Clermont is the importer of blood rage in this family. A long time ago (maybe it was in ancient Rome), blood rage was considered a symbol of a powerful warrior. Vampires who became ill would lose their minds and kill more. For an era where wars are not ending, blood anger is a weapon. The owner of Yasbeau (sire), who converted her, has blood rage. All children of Sire have blood rage, except for Yasbeau. So she was considered a heterogeneous, was locked up and bullied by her brothers and sisters, and even assaulted by Sire.

After many, many years, Philippe took his knight into Sire's castle and rescued Ysabeau. Philippe killed Sire and all his children, except Yasbeau, and claimed that she did not have blood anger. Yasbeau became Philippe's mate, but all the children she transformed had this disease. Gradually, vampires have adopted a zero-tolerance policy for vampires with blood anger, and they will be culled once they are found.

Matthew learned to control his blood anger over the long years. He thought that his illness was cured, so he transformed Marcus and Benjamin. But Marcus's child inherited blood rage and caused a murder in New Orleans, which attracted the attention of Congregation. Matthew couldn't bear to kill Marcus, so he killed all the children Marcus had made.

Benjamin

Ben is the third boss, he is a fighter, and was later transformed by MATTHEW and inherited his Blood rage. But since he was converted, he has always hated the de clermont family (don’t know why). When Phillippe was alive, he wanted to get rid of him. But this Ben is very shrewd and hides well all the time. Ben gave birth to a child with a witch (weaver) in the 14th century. There were several weavers from this child's offspring, and one of them became one of the representatives of parliament in modern times.

In 1590, Ben had seen Diana and knew she was pregnant. Ben has always wanted to find out the secrets of new vampires and witches that can give birth to children. For this reason, he had a lot of witches, but only weavers could give birth to children with vampires, so these witches all died tragically. During World War II, Phillippe was caught by the Nazis in order to save the witch (helping the Allies). While torturing Phillippe, the Germans discovered that he was a vampire. The German handed Phillippe to Benjamin, and he was tortured by Ben's inhumanity, which eventually made him unconscious, so much so that Matthew had to kill Phillippe to relieve his pain.

After Benjamin caught Matthew, he tortured him and threatened Matthew's family and friends with a video. Peter Knox also helped him. Diana killed Peter Knox with 9 knots, and shot Benjamin with the tenth knot and the arrow that the goddess gave her.

Ashmole 782

What does this book say? Just use a paragraph in the original to explain, and I will translate it briefly.

"This is a huge treasure trove of knowledge: the names of creatures, their stories, birth and death, curses, magic, miracles made by blood and magic. This is a story about us (Diana & Matthew), the weaver and the carrying blood The vampires of the rage, and the children they gave birth. The book tells me (Diana) that my ancestors can be traced back to countless ancestors, and that such a miraculous birth is possible."

This book speaks of the emergence and combination of Diana and Matthew. They were not the first witches and vampires to give birth to children. Before Benjamin and a weaver gave birth to children and passed it down to the time of Diana. After the book enters Diana's body, as long as Diana asks a question, the book will surface the answer on her skin. Basically this book is indeed an encyclopedia.

Regarding the Weaver, there are several in the book, including Sopie and Nathaniel's children, Sutu, and a senior witch in the council that appears in the third book. Weavers are all magical witches. So why can weavers and blood-rage vampires have children? According to Ahemole 782, because they have wizard DNA in their genes, this inference has also been confirmed by modern scientific and technological analysis. According to laboratory research, a witch with an elf gene will become a weaver, and blood rage has such a gene when it is a vampire or a human, so once it is transformed, it triggers the blood rage.

Speculations about the lifespan of Diana and her children

How old can Diana live, and whether she will eventually become a vampire. There is no answer in the book. Given that the author's Time's convert has been published, this is a story about Marcus, and some situations about Matthew & Diana may be mentioned. However, the current reviews of this book on Amazon are not very good. In addition, the author is writing a book about Matthew & Diana in 1590, and may reveal some clues later.

In my personal analysis, Diana is a witch with powerful magic, and the power of a book is in her body. And she has to do things for Goddess, so her life span should be very long without accident, but immortality is unlikely.

But her children have the genes of witches and vampires, and at least they can live to be 100-200 years old. This has a basis in the book. The descendants of Benjamin and the witches died before they were more than 200 years old. And the twin sister is a vampire, she might live forever. The younger brother should be at least 200 years old. The above is just a personal guess, welcome to discuss.

A Discovery of Witches quotes

  • Matthew Clairmont: [Opening narration, season one] Once the world was full of wonders, but it belongs to the humans now. We, creatures, have all but disappeared. Daemons... vampires... witches... hiding in plain sight. Ill at ease even with each other. But, as my father used to say, in every ending, there is a new beginning.

  • From opening credit: It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with A Discovery Of Witches.
