The story takes place in the early 19th century. Glass has lived in America for a long time. He married a local woman and had a son, but her wife was killed in a white army raid on the Indians. He takes his son as a fur hunter for a living. During a hunting process, he was seriously injured by a bear attack. The captain of the ship he was on wanted to take him away but was unable to do so because of conditions, so he hired two people. To take care of him, Fitzgerald not only didn't want to take care of him, but also wanted to take his property as his own, so he cruelly killed Glass's son and abandoned Glass in the wilderness to die. With strong perseverance, Glass finally returned to safety and began his revenge plan.

The whole process of watching the movie was very sad, and I was always holding my heart very depressed. The whole movie is icy and snowy. The climate is so bad. Xiao Li has really suffered. He has changed from a beautiful young man to a tortured uncle. And he, a vegetarian, wants to gnaw on the organs of animals.

The plot that touched me the most in the film was that Glass crawled out of the pit where he was buried to find his son. The whole difficult crawling process was accompanied by background music, which was too teary. When he found his son, my tears couldn't hold back. It was because he wanted to protect his son that he had sustained such a severe injury, and now that his son is gone, it is such a huge sadness that his whole world is gone.

Glass has experienced the test of life and death many times in the film, and his persistence has pulled him back from the brink of death time and time again. He was thrown down by the huge she-bear, and he was torn like a rag with scars, dying, he did not die. He was buried alive with only one breath, but he was still alive. When crawling hard in bear skin, he was attacked again and he jumped into the river and escaped without death. Drifting in the swift river water, he did not die. He didn't die even when the man and the horse fell down the cliff. In the process of escaping, he lost the water bottle and bear skin. He even took out the horse's internal organs and escaped the cold night in the horse's belly. He was not dead yet. These are his beliefs in vengeance that support him, especially lamenting the strong willpower. When the revenge was complete, he saw his wife in a daze, which meant that he had gained spiritual peace and relief.

The male protagonist was injured and unable to speak, so he felt like a silent film. A lot of information had to be expressed through his eyes, and his eyes accurately conveyed his determination to endure various sufferings and revenge.

This is a movie with revenge as the main line, but it also tells the relationship between man and nature. In the movie, the scenes of looking up at the sky through the mountains and forests are repeated. Reminiscent of the revenge story in the movie and the questioning of faith, these shots depict the beauty of nature while also becoming more meaningful. People are a part of nature. We must respect nature and don’t wantonly destroy it for profit.

The delicate picture, superb performance, perfect soundtrack, and sophisticated production make a work of art.

Lubezki's photography is awesome! Capturing natural light, skilled in technology, flowing clouds, snowy fields, rivers, grasslands, everything is under control, and has an insight into the eternity of change. The ultra-wide-angle lens is magnificent like "The Tree of Life", with a large depth of field and deep focus. People appear small and unobstructed in the vast expanse of nature. The close-ups are all-encompassing, the ants volutes, the water droplets are icy, the breath is full, and everything in the mountains has aura and is extremely detailed.

The Revenant quotes

  • John Fitzgerald: You all right there kid? Your head in the right place?

Bridger: I guess... I can't help thinking about whether we did the right...

John Fitzgerald: No! Ain't our place to wonder. The good Lord got us on a road whether we choose it or not.

John Fitzgerald: My pop, he weren't a religious man, you know? If you couldn't grow it, kill it, or eat it, he just plain old didn't believe in it, that was it. And this one time he head on up the old Saba hills... San Saba hills? He joined a couple Texas Ranger buddies of his to hunt you know? pretty routine, he done it like a hundred times before, should have been a three-day kill but, on the second day, it all went fucked. Somehow that night he lost his buddies, and to top it off, them Comanches went and took the horses so, he was starving and delirious... and he crawls up into this mott, this... this group of trees out in the middle of nowhere just sticking up in this ocean of scrub and he found religion. At that moment he told me... he found God. And it turns out that God... He's a squirrel. Yea. A big, old meaty one. "I found God" he used to say. "And while sitting there and basking in the glory and sublimity of mercy... I shot and ate that son of a bitch".

John Fitzgerald: Yeah. You might want to close your eyes kid.

  • Toussaint: [in french] Bring me the girl! Those five horses weren't for free!
