Control and influence

A few scripts taken from the play:

I could decide to give up my life and do this to help the world, but i couldn't make these choices for my children.

You'd sleep about an hour or two hours a night. You were in such a mental state that you're very controllable, very suggestible.

“Did David Miscavige physically assault you?” “Those allegations are absolute, utter rubbish.”

They all came out of the hole! They went back to the hole ! “Here's the bottom line—There is no history of violence in the church.”

People are so indoctrinated and have been in XX a really long time or they've grown up in it and they don't know anything else.
It's so scary to them to have to start all over and it takes a really strong person to stand up to them and say no.

Maybe my entire life has been a lie. You just don't see it happening to you. You justify so much.
They prep on people, suggesting you should be able to think for yourself and then tell you exactly how you have to think or get out. And if you get out, there will be consequences.

We lock up a portion of our own mind. We willingly put cuffs on. We willingly avoid things that could cause us pain if we looked. If we can just believe something, then we don't have to really think for ourselves, do we?
And so I can't damn these people who aren't coming out, or who are hiding once they come out because they're ashamed.

    1. The means of the Cultural Revolution are a common phenomenon. 2. After working hard to advance to a high level, the true biography of the founder was actually a science fiction novel. 3. I didn't expect Tom Cruise to have thick eyebrows and big eyes...

Thanks to Paul haggis and others for their brave and honest talk. Generally speaking, I don't easily believe one side's rhetoric, but fuck you, scientology. and you, tom cruise.

Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief quotes

  • Paul Haggis: I finally get to OT 3 and they give me the secret materials, which I've been hearing about all this time. They're hand written by Hubbard. You'd have to keep them in a locked briefcase, be very cautious because they would always say if this gets out it's dangerous to people. It can actually do them harm if they are not adequately prepared. And I read it and it doesn't make any sense... I think, I remember for one fleeting second thinking well maybe it's an insanity test. Maybe if we believe this they kick you out. You know? Maybe you're insane! That of course is not the case. They talk about, you know, the fact that the earth was created, that such and such of trillions of years ago and this guy, who's this space guy... and put them in volcanoes and then blow them up with A-bombs... And we have these lost souls all over us and we have to get rid of them. And I'm going what the fuck are you talking about? I mean, I'm down for the self-help stuff. I'm down for, ok, I can be clear, I can, you know, I can get rid of those, the negative emotions, but what the fuck is this?

  • Lawrence Wright: Scientology really is a journey into the mind of L. Ron Hubbard and the further you get into it the more like L. Ron Hubbard you become.
